Doris Finsecker became Doris Schwartz, not quite the same character.

Bruno and Shorofsky were pretty much the same, and Coco was still ambitious, but Montgomery wasn't never given much to do on the series. I liked Carol Mayo Jenkins a lot as Sherwood.

Ralph Garcey (Raúl García): I guess it makes sense that he didn't continue on the show. We can assume he went on to have some success doing stand up.

The absolutely best change was making the Lydia Grant character as big as it became on the show. Even from seeing how strong she was in the very first episode, you wonder why they didn't use her more in the movie. Also I really liked how Lydia and Leroy bonded offer the years, including when Leroy moved from student to instructor himself.

The series never lost any of the quality from the movie.

I agree with all of those. Debbie Allen actually filmed several scenes for the movie, but they all ended up on the cutting room floor except for Leroy's audition scene.

I liked the darkness of the movie, but I'm glad they "brightened" it up a little for the series (with the exception of the pilot).

The biggest change that I liked the most was of course Coco. Don't get me wrong I love me some Irene Cara, but my girl Erica Gimpel made that role her own. :cool:

Yes, back when the show was on the air I was heavy into Erica Gimpel too. I thought she was cute. I don't think I'd seen the movie before the series premiered so I had no problem accepting her as Coco, even though I knew of Irene Cara and liked her too.

I agree about the dark tone of the movie, even though that appealed to me too. That showed that things weren't always going to be easy trying to make it in show business. But they couldn't be too heavy with that throughout the series, people probably wouldn't want to negative aspects week after week, so it's good they lightened things up.
