View Full Version : What Prop From TDVDS Set Would You Like?
SawgrassSteve 11-08-2005, 10:22 AM If you could have any item(s) you wanted from the set of TDVDS, what would you chose?
Does anyone remember this prop from the show? I don't.
BTW, be careful if you're at work opening this link. It has a music file on it.

gilligan fanatic 11-08-2005, 10:36 AM It would be cool to have Alan Brady's hair.
But really I always liked there furniture
octobereve 11-09-2005, 02:07 PM You know, I have a vase just like the one on ebay.
What prop would I like? Like Gilligan Fanatic, I love the Petries' furniture. I would gladly take the sectional sofa and the Homer Laughlin Southwind dishes they had for the first few (five?) seasons and the cruet and salt and pepper set that's on the shelves in the kitchen. If I were tall and thin enough, I would take Laura's wardrobe.
Lolac 11-09-2005, 10:09 PM I would love to have "Horrible," the dog. He is so sweet! I would also love to have Laura's wardrobe. She had this black negligee that she wore in "Don't Trip Over That Mountain" and "A Farewell to Writing" that I absolutely love! I would also love to have a walnut with absorbitron!
Lolac
BTW, Steve, I also don't remember that vase. I would love to know what episode it was in.
hrstultz 11-10-2005, 04:43 PM The prop that I would like to have is the chair that is beside the couch. Rob sits in the chair in the beginning of the Betty Lou episode.
jillm816 11-11-2005, 10:42 AM I have always liked the little triangular pillow that sits on the sofa in the back of the living room, by the bricks. I know it sounds weird. But you just don't see triangle pillows very often! I think it's cute.
SawgrassSteve 11-12-2005, 02:03 PM Although I'd happily take the car used in the opening scene from "My Husband Is A Check Grabber," it looks like we agree on the furniture. It was the first thing that came to mind for me too.
Some of that stuff is still around and popular:

goodolddays 11-13-2005, 07:56 PM I'd like to have the twin beds. If Rob's gave him many a good night's sleep, I'm sure it'd do the same for me. And if I ever get married I'd have to have some place for my wife to sleep !
undoubtedly doomed to bachelorhood.....

BigBadBrady 11-16-2005, 04:28 AM i know what i would want, without a doubt. in many of the bedro0m scenes,
there was this weird lo0king, hourglass-shaped object on the little shelf
behind rob's headboard. it had black and white (hehe) horizontal stripes
across it. i have no clue what it is or where i would find one. but i have
wanted that prop ever since i started watching DVD like fifteen years ago.
anyone have any idea what that thing is or how i could go about trying to
find it?
Lolac 11-16-2005, 10:50 AM I know exactly which prop you are refering to. I have often wondered myself what that thing is! I wonder if Doug Denoff knows.
Lolac
Joe F 11-26-2005, 01:44 PM I'd like the typewriter from Rob's desk. I haven't even seen a typewriter in years.
ddenoff 11-28-2005, 09:45 AM The hourglass thing behind Rob's bed? i can't picture it but if anyone wants to email me a screencap (doug@dickvandykeshow.com) I'll do my best to get an answer.
We are lucky enough to have several wonderful props - paintings....
We (The Denoffs) have the two 'Artanis' clown paintings from Episode 65, "The Masterpiece" AND the spritz painting "a la Jackson Pollack" which i THINK is from "October Eve" (someone please correct me) - painted by Serge Carpetna (Carl Reiner)...it's signed by Carl and DVD.
I'll post pics of these on the www.dickvandykeshow.com website soon.
The quest of all quests (the most questioned prop) is the small poster for The Dairymaids that's on the wall behind the desk in the office set. The Dairymaids was a small Broadway show in the 1920's but I have NO idea why the art director chose it for the set...the 'hidden significance', if any.
David VP 11-29-2005, 02:41 AM Fascinating stuff Doug. Thanks for sharing.
There are lots of props that I'd be interested in (including the ones already mentioned above).
Plus:
>> "The Thing"; aka: the "Hooka", as Howard Morris ("Mr. Holdecker") put it. (From "The Masterpiece" episode.)
>> Buddy's "Meerschatz Pipe".
>> Empress Carlotta's Necklace (who's got possession of that "chandelier" now?). :)
>> The picture that is seen on the wall behind the couch in Rob's office that shows an image of a Las Vegas hotel sign that says "Now Appearing: Danny Thomas" on the marquee.
>> The "8 Ball" from the office desk.
>> That famous nine-foot curved couch in the Petrie living room.
>> The huge flying saucer toy from "Uhny Uftz".
>> The infamous cut-off bath spout that was on Laura's toe in "Never Bathe On Saturday".
>> The old rolltop desk from "The Great Petrie Fortune".
>> The huge campaign poster saying "Rob Petrie For City Council".
>> The potato shaped like a duck from "Odd But True". I wonder if there were actually two potatoes...one with the head bit off and one intact? Or maybe it wasn't a REAL potato after all. :)
>> The bull-fighting outfit from "Viva Petrie".
>> The ugly Petrie brooch shaped like the United States (stones included). :)
>> The picture of "Big Bad Brady" that was shown in "The Gunslinger".
>> The cannon that Rob used to "shoot" at the policeman in Benny Joey's nightclub.
>> The enormous pair of scissors used by Mel Cooley in Season 1's "Washington Vs. The Bunny".
>> Ritchie's pith helmet from the woodpecker episode.
>> The inflatable life raft from "The Curious Thing About Women".
>> The cool "Lazy Susan" rotating snack-mix tray, used to display the proverbial "Potato Poopies", "Corn Curlies", and "Wheat Whippies". :)
>> The portable TV in the Petrie living room (which was wheeled into the bedroom as needed).
>> Laura's "sugar cube" (given to her by Jacques Savon) from "The Square Triangle".
>> Rob's "Tiger Pajamas". Cool!
>> Laura's spiffy capri pants (any pair will do). :) (I won't wear them myself, you understand. ) ;)
>> The sweater that was worn by BOTH Rob and Jerry in many first-year episodes.
>> The fish aquarium that we only see once (in "The Night The Roof Fell In").
>> Laura's gorgeous Jackie Kennedy-esque outfit (with Jackie-like pillbox hat) that MTM wore in "Very Old Shoes, Very Old Rice". (I won't put this on either.) ;)
>> The hand-painted tie that maid "Maria" painted with one hand tied behind her back in "Turtles, Ties And Toreadors".
>> The stuffed monkey that causes Rob some problems in "My Mother Can Beat Up My Father".
>> Any original DvDS script (or similar paper items from the show).
>> The life-sized cardboard Christmas stand-up display depicting MTM & Dick Van Dyke, used in a Kent Cigarettes commercial during Season 2.
>> Rob's little "Geronimo" (motorcycle) from "Br-rooom, Br-rooom".
>> The photograph of 'Lincoln's back' (from "The Great Petrie Fortune").
SawgrassSteve 11-29-2005, 06:18 PM Whoah!
That's some Christmas list there, David!
Frankly, I admire your sense of recall. Amazing!
Steve
David VP 11-29-2005, 08:06 PM
Excellent, Steve! Excellent! I love it! (Hadn't really thought of Mr. Henderson, because I don't think a 40+-year-old feline would be an ideal souvenir...prob'ly a little "stiff" by now, I imagine. ;))
octobereve 11-29-2005, 09:30 PM LOL Steve, those pictures are priceless.
And speaking of that lazy Susan server. I have one, not as large as the Petries', with four dishes around the perimeter and a covered dish in the center, and I love it! I use it all the time. I really like it for serving PuPu platters. Just set it in the center of the table and let everyone spin to get what they want.
David VP 11-30-2005, 02:18 AM Yes, Oct.Eve -- but the big question that's on everyone's mind at this moment is: Do you ever serve 'Potato Poopies' via your 'Shiftless Suzy' (err...I mean 'Lazy Susan')? :) :D
caladon 11-30-2005, 02:52 AM I like this topic.
I'd like to have:
The sign that hung on the office door that listed Rob, Buddy and Sally's name.
The turtle shell that had been painted with characatures of the Petrie family (actually painted by DVD I believe)
The gimmicked sofa bed from "Ghost of A. Chance" (Woud be fun for visitors)
And a box of crummy buttons (YEECH!)
octobereve 11-30-2005, 03:06 PM David P, if I could only find Potato Poopies and Cheese Curlies (or Curdlies as Buddy says) and those other fine snack foods mentioned on the show, I'd definately serve them in my lazy Susan server. Maybe I can find some in time for New Year's Eve?
stacy petrie 01-27-2006, 07:38 PM i'd have to say i'd want the ottoman...i'm surprised no one else has said it!:happyface
frank
SawgrassSteve 01-27-2006, 07:59 PM Ok, Stace, but watch your step. That thing's deadly!
Steve
Nate Richie 02-20-2006, 08:49 PM I've always wanted that chair in the Petrie living room that is in front of the picture window by the front door. It's the one the ottoman is in front of during the opening of the show when Rob trips. I think that's a unique chair. Of course I'd take the ottoman, too. Actually I'd just take the whole Petrie house and leave it at that.
sbeamish 02-20-2006, 09:15 PM As a big Laurel and Hardy fan, I'd like to have the L&H costumes from The Sam Pomerantz Scandals. (Especially the hats, of course.)
I'd also really like to have the caricature of Laura that Rob does in Draw Me A Pear.
David VP 02-21-2006, 06:40 AM I'll add to my already-healthy list.......
The "Bivouac Baby" poster of Laura P. :)
octobereve 02-21-2006, 10:01 PM Actually I'd just take the whole Petrie house and leave it at that.
Me, too. :)
grnacrsfan 02-21-2006, 10:51 PM Well I love to write, so my dream would be to own Sally's desk and typewriter. After all, she is my favorite character from the show!
I would also like to own a couple of the dresses Laura wore on the show. I can't name from what episodes they are specifically, but there are a few that were just gorgeous!
SawgrassSteve 06-22-2006, 10:51 PM I would also like to own a couple of the dresses Laura wore on the show. I can't name from what episodes they are specifically, but there are a few that were just gorgeous!
Grnacrsfan,
Between David VP taking her pants, and you her dresses, poor Laura Petrie is looking more, and more, like October Eve!
Steve

Steve
totally not a bad thing. well, as long as it is 196x mtm, and not current mtm!
SawgrassSteve 08-24-2006, 11:26 PM You really are Big Bad Brady, aren't you?
BTW, Bad, your comment does bring to mind a question. Hugh Hefner is know for approaching the most attractive actresses of their era to pose in the pages of Playboy Magazine. Do you suppose he ever asked MTM? I never heard that he did, but if so, she obviously said 'no.'
Steve
BigBadBrady 08-24-2006, 11:58 PM i can't imagine that the offer wasn't extended at some point. it may
have never become public, but he would have been out of his mind
not to ask her at some point between '61 and '65.
i'm sure if it happened that you'd be doing this when you received
the package, steve:

Kevin and David, you guys are too funny (and acurate)!
Steve
Samme 08-25-2006, 07:27 PM With all due respect to Mary, I'm sure my reaction would be the same as the other fellas. But one book did say that Mary was offered a million dollars to
pose for Playboy. I would assume it either just after the DVDS or--if that high offer is true--maybe in the '70s. Be a fun question to ask Mary, I doubt she would be offended. Something different than the usual "did you all get along
on the show" type stuff.
miniaturehome 04-29-2010, 04:04 AM Hi, I'm brand new to this board. I'm building a 1:12 scale replica of the DVDS set, so the discussion of props is very interesting to me. I want to make replicas of everything in the house, not just the house itself. One of my biggest challenges is making a miniature of the painting over the sofa in the earlier episodes - the one with the horses. Does anyone know the title of the painting or the artist? I'm also interested in anything else in the house, and it would be helpful to know what the decorating colors were since I can't make the miniatures in black and white only. I have 2 or 3 color still pictures of the kitchen and living room, but none of the bedroom.
miniaturehome 04-29-2010, 04:16 AM Is the Meerschatz pipe supposed to be a take-off on a Meerschaum pipe? When I do a search, that's all that comes up.
PGood97041 07-27-2010, 02:41 AM The prop from TDVDS set I'd most like is Mary Tyler Moore...all right, I'll be serious.
Next would be ... drumroll please ... the famous closet, of all things. I live in a condo that doesn't have enough closet space, so why not?
But, OK, REALLY serious now:
1) the Mary caricature by Dick. It was really good, loved how her eyes were closed and the mouth was so big!
2) the ottoman
3) the Dairymaids poster, which I could hang in my computer room
4) one of the walnuts!!!!
Alphanumeric 08-24-2010, 10:25 PM Hi miniaturehome - there's a Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited special that someone's posted on YouTube that might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORCPrkO_O2M. At 2:17 into the video, they have grown-up "Richie" come in and they turn the set to full-color. I don't know if it's exactly the colors of the original, but at least it's something.
Marvo301 08-24-2010, 11:00 PM Is the Meerschatz pipe supposed to be a take-off on a Meerschaum pipe? When I do a search, that's all that comes up.
Yes I believe it is. There is no such thing as a Meerschatz pipe. Buddy admits at the end of the episode that he made it up. But I'm quite sure the name Meerschatz was based on or influenced by Meerschaum pipes.

on that special, they also show the living room at the end; but not the bedroom though.:(
catlover79 04-13-2012, 03:35 AM I love the triangle throw pillows, too. Those are sweet!!! :D
