View Full Version : Pass the Taboo Edited on new DVD Set...
BillyK 11-01-2005, 07:24 PM Just noticed a piece of dialogue during "Pass The Tabu" that's not on the DVD.
After mentioning to Carol & Mike about how the statue is taboo...Mike says something like "take it home and show it to your friends..."
This is the dialgue that's missing: After Carol and Mike leave the room, the boys go around saying...do you think Mom and Dad are right about the taboo.......or do you still believe we should go...then Bobby shuggs his shoulders, Peter says I do, and then Greg says "me too"....
After that it's intact...then Bobby says "so what do we do...? Greg: Only one thing we can do...."- which is on the DVD.
Anyone remember that piece of dialgue or something like that going on?
Jack1000 11-01-2005, 09:18 PM Billy,
Yes I can recall the line, but can't place exactly what comes before or after it. Mike DOES say something along the lines of "Take it home and show it to your friends." Carol says, "Why that little statue only has the power that you imagine it to have."
The question is....WHY???? WHY IS ANTHING CUT!!!??? THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!!! DAMN!!!
Oh yea, what about the fill in squares for the Hawaii episodes? Are they intact, or gone like in the Grand Canyon episodes?
Jack
BillyK 11-02-2005, 10:09 AM The squares are Gone!!!!
Yeah, I'm pretty certain that piece of dialgue is missing. They are still himming and hawing about going...then finally decide to go.
The episode is a little shorter than the others too. Around 24:00, while the others are over 25 minutes!
So that little bit of dialogue could have been deleted.
Question: Was there another instance where the girls are sight seeing and Jan misses the spider in her bag? They show the girls looking through the binoculars and Marcia needs a tissue to clear her lens. Then there's where the girls go look at the birds -- and Jan goes to get her camera....
Can anyone else recall a place they go to other than the picnic area?
So far there is one scene during the whole "Hawaii" vacation episodes I haven't seen at all. The scene takes place during part 1 "Hawaii Bound" where Mike and Carol are outside having a romantic dinner together. Very minor stuff -- them saying what a marvelous vacation it is so far, the Don Ho show they went to and how Mike was looking at all the hula girls during the show.

Hi Billy,
I checked another forum and a Brady authority thinks that the Taboo scene is intact. He didn't think that there was a cut sequence. But ALL those episodes should be coming in with a time of at least 25 minutes. You and others with this issue might want to contact Paramount. Years ago, when some selected episodes of The Odd Couple were released on VHS tape by Columbia House, as a sidenote, an edited tape somehow was mistakenly distributed as an uncut version. Some people complained, and several months later, Paramount released an uncut tape 10.
As for Mike and Carol eating dinner during the Hawaii episodes I have NO RECOLECTION of that. Out of curiosity, do you have a source for this info so we can look into this, or is it just a scene that you remember from long ago?
We DID find out that The Teeter Totter Caper from Season 3 comes in at about 24:30 however, and assumed that this episode may have been slightly trimmed by the network during the original broadcast run because it had been shown on ABC during New Years Eve Night in 1971, and the network might have taken 30 seconds out to promote the dropping of the ball that night. Strange? Yes, but it is at least a possability.

BillyK 11-02-2005, 03:44 PM Jack - That scene with Mike & Carol eating dinner is on the new DVD set!
The scene takes place between the scene with Don Ho, Bobby and Cindy, and the scene where the boys are going to bed where Greg says he has to get some sleep so he can be ready for the surfing contest - Bobby almost gets hit by the wall decoration.
It doesn't really bother me that much that the other scene is slightly edited.... I was just making an observation regarding it.
But, the whole set rocks. I noticed that the picture looks quite good considering it's age and the them song really sounds good.
BTW, no voice over during the credits during the Hawaii episodes as well as no squares before the tag scene (did I mention that before??).....
Nice to see some of the scenes that were not there before though.... For example during "The Show Must Go On??" there's a scene where Bobby and Peter are selling tickets door to door and the girl who played Margie Whipple in "The New Jan Brady" episode answers one of the doors. She starts hitting on Peter - and I thought he'd say..."oh hi MARGIE" (sarcastically) -- but she has a different name.... Can't recall her name in this episode -- I don't have the DVDs in front of me... but I thought that scene was great.
There's a bunch (excuse the pun) of stuff I either haven't seen in a long time -- or just haven't seen--which makes the set pretty interesting (to me at least).
Hope you like it as well Jack when you get it at some point.

Pav some eps in the 70's ran 27 minutes.

Very cool!!!
I worked on doing a comparision/contrast thread of scenes cut and added on TV Land/Syndicated prints in a thread "Brady Bunch Scenes No Longer Aired." I also included DVD restorations in that thread up to Season 3. I look forward to adding to the list, once I get and start watching Season 4!

Bachu 11-06-2005, 09:56 AM Awaiting my box set to arrive but I cannot believe that they cut the squares again! The end of the first episode has the surf contest and ends with a very dramatic (and I think one time only used) music cue. It will spoil the build up if it is cut. Dastards!!!
BillyK 11-07-2005, 02:55 PM Yep. Sad but true. But only on the Hawaii episodes (that I know of) and (supposedly) the one where Marcia has a crush on the dentist. I haven't gotten to that episode yet.
And yes...I checked with my old videotape and that piece of dialogue is missing - where the boys are talking about if they should go to the buriel ground.
michaellinn 11-07-2005, 10:01 PM I just got my Season 4 set in the mail today and watched the Hawaii episodes. I did notice that small bit of dialogue missing from the DVD. It's the part right after Mike says to the boys, "Take it (the Taboo) home and show it to your friends. They'll get a big kick out of it." Then Mike and Carol leave the room while giving Peter a playful pat on the head. The next part on the DVD has Bobby saying, "What are we going to do about it?" Missing is the small bit of dialogue just before that in which the boys are asking each other if they think the Taboo really is bad luck. Bobby asks if they think what Dave said is true. Greg then replies with something like: "But what Mom and Dad said makes sense. I mean, all those things could have happened without a Taboo. You guys don't really believe in the Taboo, do you?" Then Peter and Bobby say they do. Greg says, "Yeah, I kinda do, too." And then Bobby is supposed to say, "What are we going to do about it?" That small dialogue part and the squares at the end are the only things that I noticed missing from the Hawaii episodes.
BillyK 11-08-2005, 04:43 PM Yep...that's the dialogue I mentioned was missing at the beginning of the post. I couldn't remember exactly what they said but all I remember is Greg saying something like "You still don't really believe in the Taboo" and both Bobby & Peter shrug their shoulders and Greg then says "Me Too". -- then it's back to Bobby saying "What are we gonna do about it" - which is ON the DVD.
michaellinn 11-08-2005, 10:58 PM I wonder why that dialogue is missing on the DVD? Does TV Land air that dialogue in the reruns? I haven't watched the show on TV Land in a long time.

Does anyone know if the squares were included at the end of the Hawaii and Grand Canyon episodes when the show ran originally in the early '70s on ABC? If so, then I have no idea why the DVD doesn't include the ending squares at the end of those episodes.
Jack1000 11-09-2005, 06:56 PM Guys,
Another forum mentioned the possability of the edits/missing squares on the vacation episodes. Back when The Brady Bunch was syndicated in the late 80's/90's, they released the vacation episodes in a special 90 minute movie format to some syndicated markets. It could be that the fill in squares were removed from both of the Grand Canyon and Hawaii episodes for continuity to make the episodes seem like a mini-series. It is possible that a line or two was trimmed for time and this is what Paramount could have used for the vacation DVD's. It does not make sense that something would be edited from a DVD format for no reason.
Jack
michaellinn 11-09-2005, 10:04 PM Jack,
Also the "Love and the Older Man" episode (Marcia falls in love with the family dentist) does not have the closing Brady squares filling in the screen at the end of the episode on the DVD. The video and music fade out right before the squares are supposed to fill in at the end - very much like the missing squares in the vacation episodes.
Jenya 11-09-2005, 10:08 PM If you haven't noticed, they cut out the end checkerboard squares on the DVD from the dentist episode (Dr. Vogel) in season 4, and jumped over to the go-cart chasing the housekeeper in the last scene, before the closing end credits.

I've also noticed that there is no break during the crawling of the spider on Peter. I know TV Land freezes the scene with Peter waking up and looking very surprised when he sees the spider on him! The DVD runs this spider scene without a picture freeze or break.

This is further evidence that leads me to believe that Paramount re-edited the vacation episodes to make the continuity flow better. (Maybe even from the original masters, which would explain why we have what we have.) I am certain that someone at Paramount thought the vacation episodes ran better that way. But someone forgot to restore the 20 second or so cut from "Pass The Tabu." during the transition process.
The syndication prints were left as they were for the vacation episodes. However, when TV Land acquired the Brady Bunch in June of 1998, they did their own edits and restored several of the vacation episodes that syndication had cut: (i.e the scene with Mandy on the beach with Greg and Peter and Bobby rubbing suntan lotian on her when Greg says he wants to be left alone. Greg telling Professor Whitehead that "your beans are burning." both restored on TV Land and the 20-second scene of the boys talking in more detail about what to do with the idol that isn't on the DVD.)
So for the Hawaian Vacation episodes as an example, I think we have FOUR VERSIONS:
1.) The syndicated versions that TBS also used for years, just like all of TBS's other Brady Bunch episodes with their own cut footage going back to the mid 80's.
2.) The TV Land version with some restored footage/some cut footage different from syndicate going back to June 1998
3.) The "Mini Series" movie version, which is a combination of #1 and #2 with MOST footage restored except the 20 second Pass the Tabu cut and the only OTHER cuts, lets say two minutes of 16mm prints that may not have been seen since the mid 70's, and maybe one minute that had not been seen since the ABC first run.
4.) The DVD, which used option #3 with the restored 16mm back up prints. But someone at Paramount FORGOT that line was cut when they did the "mini-series" version. Obviously, the DVD is the "most complete" version.
As for "Love and the Older Man" missing the squares, I am going to say this is an oversight by Paramount as a result of releasing the disks too quickly.
Jack
michaellinn 11-10-2005, 03:07 PM These are the lines that I remember being edited out on the DVD (feel free to correct or add anything that I forgot):
Greg (to Peter and Bobby after Mike and Carol leave the room): You know, what Mom and Dad said makes sense. I mean, all those things could have happened without the Tabu.
Peter and Bobby both agree.
Greg: Hey, you guys don't really believe in the Tabu, do you?
Both Peter and Bobby say that they do.
Greg: Yeah, I kinda do, too.
Then the DVD picks up the next line, with Bobby saying:
What are we going to do about it?
michaellinn 11-10-2005, 03:21 PM Does anyone remember the scene in the episode in which Bobby becomes the school safety monitor that has Greg and Marcia talking to Carol about Bobby's behavior and they call him a "stinker"? Carol says, "Now you kids know that I don't like that word." I didn't see this scene in that episode on the DVD. Or was that in a different episode? I was thinking that it was in the school safety episode, because at the end when Bobby calls himself a "stinker," Carol then hesitantly says, "Yeah, I guess the name 'stinker' fits pretty well." Or am I just imagining Carol not liking the word "stinker"?

No, Carol's objection to the word "Stinker" is from "The Winner." (Bobby feels left out because he's the only one without a trophy.) He gets pissed when he keeps losing games/activities to the other kids. Greg says, he's a real little "stinker." (cuz he's acting like a snotty brat) Carol says she doesn't like that word. Marcia also calls him that and Carol says, "Marcia, I just said I don't like that word." She continues "Bobby's having a tough time well because all you kids have won trophies or awards of some kind and he hasn't." Greg and Marcia than apoligize and understand what Bobby is going through. This leads to the family buying magazine subscriptions from Bobby to help him win a contest. Bobby finds out that they are doing this just becaise they feel sorry for him. He yells out, "I'll win something on my own, or I won't win anything at all!" (He throws the subscription papers to the ground.)

Ah, okay! I'm sorry, Jack. I got confused. Yes, that's right - that was in "The Winner" episode. I even have the first four seasons of the show on DVD and forgot which episode that was in. Whew, for a minute there, I thought that we had another edit. Thanks for your info, Jack! :)

I still would rather have the endings to the vacation episodes with the squares. We also got to hear the closing music to the episode as the squares were filling in. It seems so edited and rushed without the squares and with the quick fade out.

I agree Mike,
We are PAYING for these disks and SHOULD be seeing everything. (With the emphasis on EVERY THING) as it was originally broadcast, not only for The Brady Bunch, but any DVD movie or TV show. If a studio isn't sure or let's say is only 90% certain that they have an uncut version of something going to DVD, go to your back-up prints and compare scene by scene what you have to make sure nothing is missing. Yes, this may take more time in the restoration process if the original prints look like s**t. But at least you the consumer would than know that these shows are being screened to make sure that every scene and line of dialogue is intact.

Bachu 11-11-2005, 02:10 PM Does anyone know of an email contact address for Paramount? On the site, I can only find a postal address and a phone number. I live in England and don't want to write them or pay for the phone call.
If someone could post an email address here we could all contact Paramount and tell them how upset we are at the edits and ask for a replacement disk. I believe that this happened to a He-Man or Thundercats disk that had an episode that was missing background music or something.
I still have the vacation episodes on tape and they have the squares present. The Hawaiian episodes really flow badly at the end with these cuts.

Elizabeth Moran's 1992 Edition of Bradymania! list the following address for Paramount's Home Video Department
Paramount Television
Home Video Department
5555 Melrose Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90038
Note that years ago I wrote to them about getting the Brady Bunch on home video, but do not recall receiving a response. The address may have changed. If you choose to write, you should include your e-mail address.
However, it would be better IMHO to actually talk to the actual person or persons who did the transfer process for the DVD's. Where did they take their prints from? I myself might consider a replacement Season 4 disk with the corrections but only if it is not a big deal. I am just more interested in some answers such as:
1. Can Paramount confirm that the missing squares from the vacation episodes were a result of transfering the prints from the "Movie Mini Series" when these selected episodes of The Brady Bunch were packaged as such to syndicated markets around the 80's-90's? Is this why 15-20 seconds is missing from "Pass The Tabu", which shows up on TV Land/syndicated prints with the cut lines in question intact? If yes, why weren't 16mm back up prints used to restore these episodes to their full uncut lengths?
2.) Why are the fill-in squares missing from "Love and the Older Man?" This is a terrible oversight. If Paramount can restore a scene from "The Show Must Go On?" (with Peter and the geeky girl) that no one remembers from the earliest days of the show, showing such care and dilligence to restore missing footage, why couldn't the fill in squares be inserted for this episode?
3.) Why is "The Teeter Totter Caper" 30 seconds shorter at about 24:30 when almost all of the other episodes come in between 25-26 minutes. (A second noted exception is "Pass The Tabu", which comes in at about 24:50. But this is due to that 15-20 second cut line.)
These are the questions to be asked. Let us know when we get answers.

No, I believe that others will contact them.
I am going to wait and see what happens with regard to if Paramount is going to do anything and what they are going to do. It's not too big of a deal at this point. Right now, I am more interested in an explanation.

michaellinn 11-15-2005, 02:23 AM I would like to ask Paramount three questions regarding "The Brady Bunch" Seasons 1-4 DVD sets:
1. Why does only the first season set have extras?
2. Why are the Brady squares edited out at the end of the vacation episodes as well as the "Love and the Older Man" episode?
3. Why is there an edit of dialogue in the "Pass the Tabu" episode?
OKCRay 11-28-2005, 04:47 AM Nice to see some of the scenes that were not there before though....
Ah yes, I remember that often-deleted scene. Her character's name was Muriel and she asks Peter if he'll take her to the movies on Saturday. "I'm sure my mom will buy some tickets from you if you will!" Peter and Bobby walk outside from the door to mull it over. Bobby thinks Peter should take Muriel out.
Peter: "Yeah, but who wants to get stuck with Muriel?"
Bobby: "It's better than getting stuck with all those tickets!"
They return to the door, with Muriel saying "I'd love to!" before Peter can say anything.
faraj 03-19-2006, 05:03 PM I just got my Season 4 set in the mail today and watched the Hawaii episodes. I did notice that small bit of dialogue missing from the DVD. It's the part right after Mike says to the boys, "Take it (the Taboo) home and show it to your friends. They'll get a big kick out of it." That small dialogue part and the squares at the end are the only things that I noticed missing from the Hawaii episodes.
Yep. I recall that line that was left out. The DVD editing can't be on account of them being made from syndicated prints because that missing line was from the TBS version of the BB when it was on that Superstation back in the 80's and 90's.
faraj 03-21-2006, 03:26 AM I wonder why that dialogue is missing on the DVD? Does TV Land air that dialogue in the reruns? I haven't watched the show on TV Land in a long time.
No, that missing dialogue wasn't in the TV Land/N@N version either. Was in the TBS version. And maybe that line was missing because it has been taboo-ed by that tiki statue too. LOL!
faraj 03-21-2006, 04:24 AM No, Carol's objection to the word "Stinker" is from "The Winner." (Bobby feels left out because he's the only one without a trophy.) He gets pissed when he keeps losing games/activities to the other kids. Greg says, he's a real little "stinker." (cuz he's acting like a snotty brat) Carol says she doesn't like that word. Jack
Yeah, Bobby sure acted like a crybaby when he was upset about being the only one without a trophy in that BB ep. late in S2. LOL! Sure was hard (the h word) on himself.
Jack1000 09-03-2006, 11:17 AM With regards to the 15-20 second cut on the Hawaii episode, "Pass The Tabu," on the DVD, someone said that those 20 seconds in question are also gone from TV Land's print as well. A local syndicated station picked up The Brady Bunch recently and right now are only on Season 2. (Long way to go before we get to Hawaii.) If I remember , I am gonna watch the syndicated prints of the Hawaii episodes to see if syndication still has that missing dialogue.
In general, TV Land does a better job on the vacation episodes than syndication does with regards to keeping more stuff intact. I'll say this. When you look at the dramatic differences in print quality on the Brady Bunch DVD's, which sometimes vary not only from episode to episode, but from scene to scene, all of the Hawaii episodes are beautiful in the remastering process. Furthermore, if you didn't know about the boys' 15 second conversation about the statue from previous prints, you would think nothing was omitted in the first place.
Jack
PS. The only noted exception for DVD print quality on the "Hawaii" episodes is shortly after Don Ho does his "Sweet Someone" song with Bobby and Cindy, after he leaves, Bobby sits on the Ukilelie. This is an obvious back up print here as well as another part where Mike and Carol are having after-dinner drinks at night. But from what I remember, with these exceptions, the Hawaii episodes never looked better.

Hey Studd,
What's up? There's a couple of added scenes where the family is taking stuff out of the attic that you can't see elsewhere (or grealy shortened.) There is one big edit restored on the DVD that I haven't seen since TBS showed Brady Bunch in the mid 80's. As you know, Greg and Marcia dispute several times about who should get the room. During the cut sequence, Greg comes down from the attic and tells Peter and Bobby that he decided that Marcia should have the room (after she talks to him and gets all emotional about it.) Peter says, "Marica?" Bobby says, "Mom and Dad gave it to you." Greg says, "Yea, and I gave it to Marcia. Peter says, "What's going on around here?" Greg says, "I'll tell you what's going on around here. You two guys are gonna help me move my stuff back to our room." Peter says, "Our room?" Bobby whispers back to Peter, "He must of banged his head on the rafter!"
