My daughters and I were having a conversation abt how easy it is to burn cds, dvds, etc. Then the subject came up of how it was when one had to record a cassette. The whole song had to play while it was being recorded. It was made a little easier when the companies added the FF recording feature that allowed the song to play fast while being recorded.
Also, you could also record over a cassette a few times, but sometimes you could hear the songs that were on there before in the background.
But!!!!! as I was telling me daughters abt 8-tracks, they were laughing. One is going to be 22 the other is 16, so they were not around when 8-tracks were the norm.
The last 8-track I ever bought was the Doobie Brothers. I hated having to play 8-tracks, especially when there wasn't a REW capability. Having to hear the entire thing just to get to the song you wanted to hear. I remember there was a FF feature, but it was soooooooo NOT FF. It was slow as molasses.
What are your memories or comments abt 8-tracks?

You mean cassete tapes? I still have to record CDs on to them because my mom's car only has a cassete player, not a CD player, so if I wanna listen to my CDs in the car I have to listen to cassetes, which is really annoying.

I remember those wonderful things from my childhood days. My parents had a few of them. What a horrible music format that was.

Around 1990 I bought a 1978 Camaro, and the damn thing had an 8 track player in it! I wanted to keep it in there just for laughs, but I eventually replaced it.

My dad still has his and the player too.
It doesn't work, but he's been swearing for ten years to have it fixed.

Before Cassete tapes their were 8-tracks.

I used to have a bunch of them. I even got blank ones to record off the radio. I think I last had an 8 track player around 1980 or 1981. I don't know what became of the tapes.

OMG!!!!! Loves those pics...lmao

Hi Maroon5...cassettes are a b***** nowadays, but 8-tracks were the worst. Be glad you didn't have to deal with them!!!! Big ol' bulky thingamajigs. They are the size of 4 cassettes, in thickeness and length. Damn, I am so glad for CD's. I remember when CD's first came out...i wondered...what the hell is this and these are just like 45's, except smaller!

Oh yes, I do remember 8-tracks. I hated that if you wanted to hear a song again, you couldn't just rewind it, like you can with cassettes. I know I still have some of my 8-tracks, I think they're in my parent's garage.

I remember my first 8-track when I was ten in 1972. I remember these tracks:

American Pie--Don McLean
Drowning in the Sea of Love--was it Barry White?
Never Been to Spain--Three Dog Night
Lion Sleeps Tonight (not the one by the Tokens, some male singer back then)
Cleanup Woman--female R & B singer
Bang a Gong--T-Rex
Family Affair--Sly and the Family Stone
White Lies, Blue Eyes--Bullet (not to be confused with the BulletBoys)
One of Those Nights (or whatever it was)--The Partridge Family
I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing--The New Seekers (did you know the COKE JINGLE was the hit before they re-recorded it for a non-Coke-related single?? The original was called, not suprisingly, "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke.")
A soft song by Van Morrison
Kiss an Angel Good Morning--Charlie Pride
Anticipation--Carly Simon
Joy--Apollo 100
Levon--Elton John
Hey Big Brother--Rare Earth

My favorite songs were the ones by T-Rex and Rare Earth. I had no idea what Don McLean was singing about, but the lyrics were interesting.

We have an 8-track player in our Ford-administration-era FM/AM stereo receiver but I've only used it once. I bought Elton John's Blue Moves album on 8-track for fifty cents at a flea market and I played it only once. Not a good album! :(

Why are they called 8 tracks if you could fit like 15 songs on there? lol

because they actually had 8 separate "tracks" on the magnetic tape; the tape was similar to, but wider than a music cassette tape, and instead of 2 "sides" the tape had four "programs" - each with two stereo channels (2 x 4 = 8)

it was kind of annoying because you couldn't rewind or fast forward through a crappy song, but you could press the "program" button to jump to a different track at the same spot on the tape - similar to flipping sides on a music cassette.

came first. At any rate, I still have some of 'em. But my 8-track tape player
went bad years ago. It was definitely not my favorite audio format.

My godfather used to have a whole collection of 8-tracks and records because he had a 8-track/record player and every time my family would visit him my godfather would always like to play old country 8-tracks but he would never let Mom mess with his 8-tracks because one day when we were visiting him on vacation I was having a snack with my godfather when suddenly we heard weird music coming from the living room and next thing we knew there was Mom with a broken 8-track and then my godfather accused my mom of breaking his 8-track when the real truth was the 8-track was stuck in the player and she was trying to get it out but it is a real funny story. But my godfather had some really nice country 8-tracks and some Frank Sinatra ones and even some 8-tracks of 70's music too

Cassettes came about in the early 60's, they surpassed 8-track in the 70's when sound quality was improved.

8-tracks had mediocre sound quality and the tape itself wore out fast. Cassettes had much better sound quality. Reel-to-reel also had superior sound to 8-tracks.

My first exposure to rock and roll on a regular basis came from 8-tracks: a compilation I had when I was ten had "American Pie" by Don McLean, and "Bang a Gong" by T-Rex. I sat on the floor listening to it for hours. This was 1972.

My first car a '84 Olds 98 Regency had an 8-track player/CB Radio in it. I was so excited. I was soon disappointed when I bought an ABBA 8-track and the player didn't work... :( :( :(

There was that hiss, and Dolby noise reduction sometimes reduced too much, but for long trips..you could pack a lot more music.

ah yes ........... 8- tracks! We had a player in the house and in both vehicles. We used them until the mid-80's. The last 8- Track that I bought was "Sessions Presents - Mellow Gold Various Artists Part 1 & 2 8-track tape" That was around 1975. After that I made up my own tapes recording off the radio. We have come a long way baby!:D

During the middle part of the 1970's, I had a stereo which included an 8 track tape player. 8 track was a fad with me for a few years, 1973 to 75, I had a few 8 track tapes but discovered the tapes were of inferior quality and the sound wasn't very good. So I went back to vinyl records and cassettes and I've stayed with them ever since.

T-120 cassettes are OK, they are nice to have because they hold 60 minutes of music on each side. The drawback is, the tape itself is very thin, fragile and prone to breakage. Not recently, but in the past I had some T-120 cassettes where the tape snapped off the spool when the tape was done rewinding. I've learned from this and I'm more careful now when rewinding a T-120 cassette. I press the stop button before the tape gets to the end, then eject the tape and rewind it the rest of the way manually.

I've had only one 120-minute tape, which I taped the Beatles' White Album on. Capitol put out a cassette version on that album as a two-tape set; now I know why.

I remember them. I never owned one or more of them and the player, but my brother still has an 8-track player and several of the tapes.

The 120-minute cassettes were prone to breaking down, which is why I limited my cassettes to 90 minutes in length. I haven't listened to one of them in a loooooong time.

For a brief time, 1973 to 75, I tried 8 track tapes but quickly discovered that cassettes were far superior in design and overall sound production, so I ditched 8 tracks pretty quick. In the 70's I was a big Elton John fan and had two of his albums on 8 track, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Caribou, but later I replaced those 8 tracks with the vinyl LP's.

No really,doesnt look it........

Here is a list of cartridges released in the 80s......

http://web.archive.org/web/20011109174535/http://8trackheaven.com/80s.html

How many of those do you think are actually analogue??

The 80s really sucked..... Digital crap started ruining analogue media...... I would NOT want an 8 track that was digitally sourced!!

From the list I know Phil Collins "Face Value" and "Hello I must be going" Are indeed analog (I have FACE VALUE) However NO JACKET REQUIRED is not.....

Analogue is a beautiful format sadly abandoned for what I consider crap :(
