View Full Version : Why do we add salt to boiling water? ¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 10-27-2005, 08:13 PM Is it for taste? How much taste does it actually add? Penny Lane 10-27-2005, 08:24 PM Being an experienced cook you add salt to boiling water or anything that you are cooking because it enhances the flavor. If you add salt after cooking it is just not the same. You have to cook with salt (example; oatmeal, veggies, pasta) or it will not taste as good) I know that a lot of people have to limit their salt intake becuse of high blood pressure .But in normal circumstances you have to cook with salt or else food is really bland. ¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 10-27-2005, 08:36 PM Being an experienced cook you add salt to boiling water or anything that you are cooking because it enhances the flavor. Now I know, thanks! :D TJL 10-27-2005, 09:03 PM You put salt in boiling water because the instructions on the box tell you to do that. You don't want to disobey the box, do you? ;) MsOrange 10-27-2005, 10:11 PM Not to be an ass.... but this isn't true. Salt is added to boiling water for the same reason salt is put on icy roads. It lowers the boiling point of the water and quickens the boiling process. And when salt is put on the roads, it lowers the freezing point of the ice therefore causing it to appear to "melt" the ice. I may have only gotten a 68 on my Chemistry Regents, but I did pretty good in the class otherwise, and this is something I distinctly remember. actually you are both right... but whatever. When you are cooking noodles, adding salt to the water once it's boiled is really the only time you have to season the actual noodles themselves. Fleet 10-27-2005, 10:37 PM I don't add salt to water. It's put in so many other things (like bread) that I don't want to ingest too much sodium. Karen* 10-27-2005, 11:22 PM I never add salt to my boiling water... phoebe7165 10-27-2005, 11:32 PM I never add salt to my boiling water... Same here. When I cook pasta, I put just a drop of vegetable oil in the water to keep the pasta from sticking. Shiki Minami 10-28-2005, 11:41 AM Usually, adding salt to the boiling water mainly use for cooking, such as pasta, especially spagetti. As for salt to the non-boiled water, I use it when I had cankersores sometimes. I get about one or two cankersores each year. I think my father uses salt to the boilded water sometimes, but I don't remember. Moonlight Lady 10-28-2005, 12:01 PM I never add salt to my boiling water... Neither do I. I use either vegetable or olive oil to keep the pasta from sticking. robyrob 10-28-2005, 12:23 PM so it wont burn. Penny Lane 10-28-2005, 03:57 PM Not to be an ass.... but this isn't true. That is the only reason. Another thing, You don't add salt to water until it is boiling because salt will scar you pan. Adding it to boiling water will keep it from settling to the bottom.
