View Full Version : Bubba was Fred's best and most loyal friend
GARFIELDKOOL 10-22-2005, 02:34 PM ...to the end. Melvin came and went. If you blinked, you missed Leroy and Skillet, even though they were funny. Grady and Fred fought at times. Bubba was there from the beginning to the end, and Fred dissed him at times. Bubba helped Fred get those records back, he helped Fred try to stay awake when Fred was trying to break that record. Bubba and Fred were more compatible than Fred's other friends were. That's why I don't know why producers felt that Whitman Mayo was the best Redd Foxx replacement temporarily. Don Bexley would have held his own.
gilligan fanatic 10-22-2005, 02:40 PM When Whitman Mayo came on we almost never saw Bubba. When he left to do Grady Bubba was back.

I agree. Bubba was a very underrated character who was really funny.
"I want my daddy's records."
glenny 10-24-2005, 08:43 AM He also helped Fred get out of that old age home and helped him with his circus. Bubba was allright.
Brian Damage 10-24-2005, 10:56 AM I preferred Grady over Bubba.
mooseface 10-24-2005, 06:20 PM He also helped Fred get out of that old age home and helped him with his circus. Bubba was allright.
Yep - and that little speech he gave when Fred won Watts Businessman of the Year was great.

That speech he gave mooseface, showcased Bubba's ability for words. I don't think Grady would have spoke that great...matter of fact, I know he wouldn't have.
Michael72581 12-15-2005, 01:54 AM Bubba went on "The Gong Show" with Fred and Lamont to perform a song and dance routine with them.
Redd Foxx 12-18-2005, 09:08 AM Bubba is awesome. My fav. episode with him was called "The Blind Mellow Jelly Collection (3-10)". I'll never forget Bubba's face, when he had those glasses on, and said to the record guy. "I want my daddy's records back!" I was laughing so hard.
Frump 01-26-2006, 10:29 PM To me Grady was a better friend, After all Fred DID leave Grady in charge when he went to St Louis. If you notice Grady and Bubba were RARELY ever in the same episode.

I always thought Bubba was the better friend. I always figured the reason Fred left Grady in charge was that Bubba was married and his wife would have thrown a fit about him staying at The Sanford's house.
Frump 01-26-2013, 10:54 PM I want to say Grady was the better friend, after all,Fred and Grady go all the way back to st. Louis I think.
Also during the pool table episode Bubba' joins in with the other guys in eating Fred out of house and home, and Grady sticks by Fred,
I don't think it makes Grady any less of a friend just b/c he wasn't around toward the end.
*ROGER* 01-26-2013, 11:44 PM ... Bubba helped Fred get those records back,
I want my daddy's records back!!!

Yeah, Maxine the knife!
Frump 01-27-2013, 01:57 PM Yeah, Maxine the knife!
Also there obviously would NOT have been as much comedy if Fred left Bubba in charge.
I don't think Bubba and Lamont would butt heads as much. Bubba was pretty passive and I think he and Lamont got along for the post part.
But I still have to go with Fred conisdered Grady is BEST friend.
rollo's girl 02-01-2013, 10:06 PM Bubba was also there with Fred in the very last episode, when they both got their GEDs and if memory serves, Fred introduced him as his best friend. Very poignant episode. I think Bubba was the best.
Cloud9 Lorraine 02-03-2013, 12:45 PM Through out the series I think Grady and Bubba were both referred to as Fred's best friend at one time or another. I suppose Fred could have two very close friends, and depending on how often they'd see each other could determine who was his best friend at the time. All in all though, I'd give a slight edge to Grady since he seemed to hang out with Fred more. It was inferred that Grady would come over nearly every night and watch tv with Fred.

Yes I always thought Grady was also.
Also I think Bubba and Grady only appeared together twice if I'm not mistaken.

I think they appeared together more than twice. The Masquerade Party, Steinberg and Sons, A House is Not a Poolroom, The Surprise Party, Legal Eagle, and Wine, Women & Aunt Esther to name a few. Could be others . . .

The fast fanny episode is one too in which they all appeared which was one of my favorites!
Frump 02-04-2013, 06:48 PM Thank!
The only 2 I can remember right off are the ones about the mascherade party and the one where Fred returns from St. Louis.
Sonny Carson 02-04-2013, 10:57 PM I liked Bubba better than Grady because of his one liner's. And the fact that he got funnier reactions out of Fred. I think Fred considered Grady and Bubba to be his best friends. But him and Grady did have more heated moments like the incident where Fred took Grady's set and when Grady was gonna marry Dolly.
Frump 02-04-2013, 11:07 PM I dunno why for SOME reason I got the impression that Bubba was quite a bit younger than Fred and Grady. In fact to me Grady ACTED older than Fred.
I know Fred was 65ish, to me Grady seemed 75ish, and Bubba seemed more in his 50s maybe.
comedyfreak 02-07-2013, 05:03 AM Melvin was also Fred's friend then he disappeared.
GARFIELDKOOL 02-07-2013, 08:10 AM Melvin was also Fred's friend then he disappeared.
True. But he didn't stick around on the series long enough to be rated. Plus the Melvin character just lacked personality.
