SANTA ANA -- A motorcyclist died early Wednesday in a collision with an SUV whose driver had drifted toward or stopped by the center divider in the carpool lane of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway, then drove off, officials said.

Ryan Dallas Cook, 23, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred on the southbound 55, north of MacArthur Boulevard, just before 12:30 a.m.

Witnesses told investigators that Cook's black Honda CB750 collided with a Hyundai that was going about 5 or 10 mph toward the center divider on a 45-degree angle or had stopped, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Johnson.

Cook fell onto the roadway and was run over by three other vehicles, and the driver of the dark-color Hyundai SUV continued south, the officer said.

"We don't have anything to say why the driver let the vehicle slow down," Johnson said. "We don't want to go on the record with anything. It could be a sleepy driver, mechanical failure or drunkenness."

Cook hit the Hyundai "pretty hard," he added.

Cook was a trombone player in the Orange County band, Suburban Legends. His parents say that he picked up his first musical instrument in the fourth grade.

Investigators recovered some vehicle parts at the scene, and the SUV is believed to have rear or side damage, he said.

None of the drivers who struck Cook was injured, Johnson said.

i know!!! i was on his myspace a couple minutes ago and the fans are just devestated, i cant begin to imagine what his parents are going through
