View Full Version : Could Esther and Woodrow carry a show by themselves?
GARFIELDKOOL 10-19-2005, 07:43 PM Would it be entertaining? During the last few years of Sanford and Son, it looked like the producers were trying to focus on Esther and Woodrow, like they were auditioning for a show of them 2 to carry. In the words of Fred, I don't know if a Wino and a Rhino could carry a show. LOL Lawanda Page wasn't the best actress, but she would have needed a very strong supporting cast to help carry the show. She was a exciting character, though.

That idea would have been a lot better for a spinoff instead of Esther and a New Family living in the Sanford Home
nerrad 10-20-2005, 11:20 AM I noticed that too. How about when they tried to adopt that thug, LOL. Woody had a hardware store? Until that episode I don't think that was ever mentioned before. How could he stay so drunk if he owned his own business.
Brian Damage 10-20-2005, 11:22 AM Hell no!

I didn't consider him a THUG at all-lol
gilligan fanatic 10-20-2005, 06:49 PM I like both characters but I don't think it would be the same at all without Fred and Lamont.
JeffRuss1972 10-22-2005, 02:45 PM I think it might have been interesting, but they would have needed another strong character like Fred for it to really work.

I agree Jeff. If you noticed, I've been trying to wake this board up. It's like all Sanford and Son fans vanished. You could never stop talking about a classic show. LOL
JeffRuss1972 10-22-2005, 03:25 PM I've noticed it has REALLY died down. This is a GREAT show, and Redd Foxx is still the greatest ;)
Michael72581 12-21-2005, 03:16 AM I think it would of worked out great. Aunt Esther was a very strong supporting character on "Sanford And Son". The show could of been titled "The Andersons" and would focus on Esther and Woody. The show would take place at their home. Esther would still be the same bible-thumping woman. In this show, Esther will be consistently fighting with Woody the same way she always consistently fought with Fred. When she fights with Woody, she will be yelling at him about his drinking, the way he looks at women, that he never goes to church, and other issues. She will also consistently call him a heathen. Woody would fill Fred's shoes and call her all sorts of names to get back at her. He could say something like "Fred's right about you. You are a gorilla." As far as a strong supporting cast, there could be a couple that are Esther and Woody's next door neighbors who act identical to them. The wife is friends with Esther and attends church and bible meetings with Esther. The husband is friends with Woody and the two always hang out and get drunk at a local bar with two other crazy friends to round out the supporting cast who act just like Leroy and Skillet.
comedyfreak 12-21-2005, 03:54 AM I don't think it would have worked, judging by The Sanford Arms. Although if she had a stronger suspporting cast it may have had a chance. I will always love Sanford And Son, I have all six dvd box sets. I'm watching the second season and noticed that Esther didn't seem to have joined the cast until the third season.

You really can't go by Sanford Arms because Esther was only a Supporting Character on that show, not a Lead Character. She basically had the same Role on Sanford and Son that she had on Sanford and Son, ocassional Appearances.
Redd Foxx 12-30-2005, 05:24 AM I don't think it would have made it personally.

Lawanda Page, like Redd Foxx, was a standup comedian. Steve Allen wrote the
liner notes for one of her many comedy albums. I haven't heard any of them,
but I did see her on a Steve Allen TV special, in which the cast roasted Julia
Child. (It was on PBS on Mar. 16, 1980. I have it on an audio cassette.) She
was funny on that, hurling zingers at the famous TV cook. With a good foil, it
might have been a hit. To be honest, though, I don't remember Woodrow that
well. He wasn't in as many SANFORD & SON episodes as Aunt Esther was.

It would have lasted longer than Sanford Arms
magellan333 12-31-2005, 08:18 PM I don't think would have worked. It might have lasted a season, but Esther was "delightfully annoying". Somebody with that quality really can't carry their own show. It would have met the same fate as "Flo", "Checking In", "The Fratellis" and "Grady".

Esther only ACTED WILD around Fred. She acted regular around Woody and Lamont

Her wild and crazy acting is what made her character. A calm and collected, Bible thumping Esther, you can see that all over America ever Sunday.

Well she didn't act like that at all on SANFORD ARMS
magellan333 01-02-2006, 08:44 PM Well she didn't act like that at all on SANFORD ARMS
And Sanford Arms tanked.
TVFactFan 01-02-2006, 08:48 PM And Sanford Arms tanked.
It wasn't because of her, it was the new FAMILY living in the Sanford House
magellan333 01-04-2006, 10:01 PM If she didn't act that way on Sanford Arms then what fun was she?

Correction she did lash out at Bubba a couple of Times but that was it
