I have some dvds where the audio is "crackly". I suspect it's from a mono tape being played in a stereo vcr when copying to disc. Using Womble MGPVCR I know how to separate the audio track from the mpg giving me an mpa file. Does anybody know anything about editing these audio files to remove such crackle? I know absolutely nothing about this at all, so am looking for specific advice on software to use and any other information that might be helpful.

I don't have a solution for you, but I do have a question - would it be better to play back the mono tape in a mono deck to make a disc copy? I ask because of the Man from Atlantis pilot I've been working on for you - the copy I've made has hiss in the background, and every other version of the same pilot I've checked has the same problem (although strangely enough, the hiss is actually less prominent in the copy I've made myself). I still have a mono multi-standard deck I could try it in if that would make a difference.

Your suggestion is undoubtedly the way to go - always best to do things properly the 1st time. Unfortunately, I don't have the original tape so I'm stuck trying to fix it "after the fact".

I use Goldwave for most of my audio processing, but there are much more powerful software tools out there. I would check around the VCDhelp forums in the audio section and see what suggestions people make.
