View Full Version : Favorite instrumental parts in songs?
Janice Johnson 10-13-2005, 10:17 AM I have some favorite instrumental parts in songs.
Debbie Gibson songs
Out Of The Blue. I like the instrumental thing after she says, 'Now with you". It sounds like, "Now with you(Clash) out of the blue". It sounds like someone banged cymbals together. Oh I love it!:D
Out Of The Blue. She says, "Here with you, then it goes into an instrumental part. I love it!
Staying Together
The thing at the end. She says,It's right before you, it's right before your eyes, then there is like one final loud note, then the song ends. Love it!
Fallen Angel
(She says this line)All your red hot love i've found (ah-ah, ah-ah), then it goes into an extended instrumental party. I say extended because some of this beat is played previously in the song, but now it has an additional added part
Paula Abdul
To You
One part goes into a great instrumental part.:D
Sraight Up
I love the flute sound! And I like the opening
Cyndui Lauper
She Bop. I love opening! It sounds like running. I don't know how to explain it, but it sounds as if someone is running. Daddadum-dum(Very fast)
Janice 10-13-2005, 10:43 AM The instrumental in Layla is incredible.
Kazza 10-13-2005, 12:13 PM 'She bops' is full of innuendo :p

Number 9 Dream 10-17-2005, 06:50 PM I was just gonna say that :D I think it's the best part of the song!
I also like the instrumental at the end of "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses
The instrumental in Layla is incredible.

Zoneboy 04-24-2007, 09:50 PM Raphael Ravenscroft's sax solo in Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty
I've always loved the sort of classical harpsichord sounding part in the middle of the Beatles In My Live.
Steve M. 04-25-2007, 10:25 AM I've always loved the sort of classical harpsichord sounding part in the middle of the Beatles In My Life.
It was a piano played by George Martin, recorded straight and played at double speed. :)

:yeahthat Another favorite of mine is the fuzz guitar solo played by Tony Peluso in the Carpenters' Goodbye To Love. I also love the beginning keyboard/bass solo in the Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway duet You Are My Heaven.
Then of course is the chicka chicka boom sound on Johnny Cash's great songs. :D
Steve M. 09-15-2007, 09:42 PM the horns on Earth, Wind and Fire's "September" :)
Ohio8 09-15-2007, 09:52 PM One more Family moment - Charlie Whitney's guitar volley on "Good News Bad News" :guitar:
Charlie's two guitar parts in "Second Generation Woman," and the violin during the song's coda.

Steve M. 09-16-2007, 09:08 PM Charlie's two guitar parts in "Second Generation Woman," and the violin during the song's coda.
There's no violin in "Second Generation Woman," I think you're thinking of the violin at the end of "The Weaver's Answer" (played by the late Rick Grech).
tv star collector 09-17-2007, 09:38 AM The instrumental bridge in many Beatles songs, but esp. "A Hard Day's Night,"
"Let It Be," "Something" and the aforementioned "In My Life."
Lex Luthor 09-18-2007, 02:11 AM As a Sax player in highschool I a partial to the Sax solos in
Superfreak - Rick James
Careless Whisper - Wham
ABlairican Pie 09-18-2007, 09:30 AM the thunderous riff that cones just before the second verse of Rush's "Tom Sawyer" :guitar: :drummer:
Same with the cool guitar solo by Alex Lifeson's "Alerxt In Wonderland" segment, after the main riff, in Rush's "La Villa Strangiato". :guitar: Where he fades in with the volume knobs. The whole solo's killer.
Steve M. 02-27-2012, 12:10 AM the slide guitar in Led Zeppelin's recording of "Travelling Riverside Blues" :guitar:
UMFaninMD 02-27-2012, 07:34 PM I have a ton but here are some:
John McVie's bass solo in Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain." Lindsay Buckingham's guitar solo is amazing as well, but the bass line gives me chills.
On "Eye in the Sky" from Alan Parsons Project, there is an opening called "Sirius" which is always cut off when the song is played on the radio. It's extremely eerie and sets the tone of the whole song.
The beginning to "Body Mechanic" from Quadrant Six, and the ghostly synth solos that are throughout the song.
The instrumental part after the chorus in Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything."
The soundtrack to the 1980 horror film "Prom Night" has some great instrumental parts, but one of the best ones is the synth solo in "Love Me Til I Die." It's gorgeous and you really have to appreciate disco music to enjoy it.
The piano solo at the end of John Foxx's "Europe After the Rain."
Steve M. 02-28-2012, 12:38 AM the harmonica in John Mayall's "Room To Move"
JoPol_wannabe 02-28-2012, 02:21 AM Dire Straits- Saltuns of Swing
Intro to "Where the Streets Have No Name" by U2
The Piano at the beginning and end of Wildfire
Lynard Skynard Free Bird
Any guitar solo by Joe Bonamassa
Hearts Dreamboat Anne best Flut instrumental by Anne and Nancy's guitar solo was great too.

Yooch 02-29-2012, 01:33 AM What a great thread! :) I'm still compiling my complete list, but a few songs that immediately come to mind are:
Guitar solo (by Joe Walsh) in In the City by the Eagles
The muted-string percussive chords in Heartbeat by Buddy Holly
Guitar power chords in Long Time and More than a Feeling, by Boston
Slow organ intro leading into the twangy guitar in Shiny Happy People by R.E.M.
Piano intro and instrumental bridges in Isn't it Time by the Babys
Slow, classical rhythms at the beginning and throughout No Sugar Tonight by the Guess Who
(I would also like to check out the songs others have posted in this thread)
Steve M. 02-29-2012, 12:32 PM the bass line on Family's "Part Of the Load" :)
D-Dey 02-29-2012, 03:22 PM I'm going to leave a lot out, but two that I like a lot are from Lush's Split album.
"Blackout" contains a ringing guitar "duel" between Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson that puts Chryssie Hynde to shame.
The instrumental climax of "Starlust" also can't be ignored. I actually want the sheet music to that, and not just the guitar tabs.
Aside from that, the ending of "Anti" by The Vandals is something that has to be heard. I was listening to it with headphones on WUSB years ago, and it literally went through one ear and out the other.
There are too many others I'll have to add to my list later on.
MrCleveland 02-29-2012, 03:55 PM I have sooooo many as well...
OkZKZwsjrUE
Nice Harpsichord/Celeste Solo, nearly drowns the tamboura and electric violin.
T4Y3iTJtzgM
Similar to "Celeste", but has a beautiful english horn solo rather than a celeste.
3YgmqKr7njQ
Great String arrangement on this.
SqAh1dQu_pg
I like the flute solo on here...has an undertone like "California Dreaming".
jTiDUM7QW70
Flourishing brass in this.
Steve M. 02-29-2012, 10:40 PM the brass in Boz Scaggs's "Georgia" :)

Steve M. 03-01-2012, 10:23 PM Jeff Beck's guitar on "Heart Full of Soul" by the Yardbirds :guitar:
Janice Johnson 04-22-2013, 04:50 AM The section in Jackson 5's Dancing Machine. The part where Michael does the robot in sounds extremely great! It goes "babang, babang,babang.....:D
Steve M. 04-22-2013, 10:14 AM Randy Meisner's bass line on the Eagles's "Life In the Fast Lane", just before Don Henley sings the line, "Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst . . . "
Penny Lane 04-22-2013, 10:30 AM Ray Manzerek's organ interlude in Riders On The Storm byThe Doors. It was criticized by some who thought it was too "jazzy" and "Lounge like". But I love it!
Also the long instrumental interlude of The Doors "Light My Fire" which is rarely /if ever played because of the length. It lengthens the song to around 7 minutes and back in the day AM radio didn't play anything that was over 3 or 4 minutes long. Even when I hear it on FM stations today it is never played the full length which is too bad because it highlights all three of the musicians talents. The interlude is severely chopped off and to me it is very noticeable and ruins the song!:(
Penny Lane 04-22-2013, 10:33 AM The music in "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" sends chills through me.
It is very haunting and sad.:( It works with the lyrics beautifully!
Penny Lane 04-22-2013, 10:35 AM Jeff Beck's guitar on "Heart Full of Soul" by the Yardbirds :guitar:
Oh! Great song!:guitar:
MrCleveland 04-22-2013, 05:07 PM With songs that are long...
uBYPPjLJO5U
Interesting flute solo, when Phil Collins did this song in 1980 live...6 minutes were cut from it!
o591slQgirA
What can I say? Hendrix guitar solo in a military-style then the 2nd part is basically instrumental.
k8dvOmyLwdk
This is actually 4 songs, but there's good guitar solos in this song as well as a celesta solo.
Steve M. 04-22-2013, 05:10 PM The banjo in the Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel"
Zoneboy 04-22-2013, 06:57 PM On "Eye in the Sky" from Alan Parsons Project, there is an opening called "Sirius" which is always cut off when the song is played on the radio. It's extremely eerie and sets the tone of the whole song.
You rarely here "Sirius" on the radio but there's at least one station here in NC that will play it. 2 other songs with great instrumental lead-in's are "Threshold"/"Jet Airliner" by The Steve Miller Band and "Foreplay"/Long Time" by Boston. Speaking of "Jet Airliner", if you don't hear "Threshold" first, it's a sure-fire bet you'll get the "Funky kicks going down in the city" version.
