View Full Version : Disc duping question

This question is for people who make exact copies of discs in a computer, not those who dub discs with a player and a recorder:

Does anybody rip only specific eps from varous discs and re-author them into a new disc when a person only wants certain eps? Or do you just duplicate the discs in their entirety (giving eps they don't want, with eps they do want)?

My experience and policy has always been the latter. Sometimes it works in my favor (eg. I get a disc full of eps I want and the other party gets a disc with only 1 ep they want) and sometimes it doesn't (eg. I get less than the other person). I've never been particularly bothered either way figuring it all works out in the end.

Just curious, please chime in!

The only time I pull something off a disk is when I have a disk full of mpegs, which is a great way to store. You can put up to 20 half hour shows on a disk or 9 one hour shows in mpeg 1. Otherwise it's much easier to burn the whole disk rather then reauthor just the episode they want. My time has to be worth something. My wife says not much but then again that's another story.

I usually just burn the whole disc as it is not time effective to do eps here and there
so people get the whole disc
BUT i generally try to avoid those type of swaps and try to trade even

It depends upon my mood. If it's a small trade for 1-2 hours & all shows are on different discs, sometimes I just create a new single one, with the 1-2 hours they want. (BUT...prior to this weekend when the thread here was discussing editing programs, my attempts at authoring are pretty poor. So I create the new disc in the DVD recorder.) If it's someone I've traded with before, I'll normally just copy the disc. Sometimes, if I'm busy & just want to get the stuff out the door & it's only 1 or 2 discs, I just make copies. Like OP, sometimes I get more than I send & sometimes I get exactly what was negotiated & the other person gets a deal. ;)

I just copy the whole disc. Not worth the time otherwise.

I know you can take tracks from several different music CDs and make a new compilation on a computer. I gather from this discussion that there is no easy way to take episodes from different DVDs and make a new compilation on a computer. Is this correct?

No, it really isn't difficult. It's just not as easy as doing a straight disc copy.

Then you also need an authoring program (which usually comes with a burner).

(I'm totally new to this so if I can make my own compilations, without commercials & such, anyone can! )

I send the discs as they are - I do not make special discs for trades and I don't ask people to make them for me, either.

I'll do individual episodes as far as if they want them in mpeg2 format
for they're own burns and they missed them.

If they want 2 together then I'll just burn the DVD itself.

Someone asked me to make 1x07 and 1x08 of Wanted on a disc
and I did a basic menu, then just decided to be nice cause they
were patient and sent them the entire 8 episodes *lol*

So it depends I guess on if it's worth it. a 1 disc trade is not really
worth it due to the mail delivering etc.
