View Full Version : People whose movies you cannot bring yourself to watch
Brian 10-08-2005, 10:30 PM Are there any person's movies, whether it be a director or actor, whose movies you boycott or just cannot bring yourself to watch? It doesn't happen to me very often. However the only significant exception is Roman Polanski.
I think he is a great director. But I hate that he raped a 13 year old girl and fled the country. I can watch his movies before then (Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby) but I just cannot watch any of his work afterwards. It's not a matter of not wanting to watch because I don't want to but it's a matter of not being able to bring myself to do it.
One thing to keep in mind: Not everybody can separate the art from the artist. If you do not agree with that person, that is fine but please do not criticize that person for it. It is every person's right to not watch what ever movies they like.
I would never dream of criticizing someone who watches Polanski's post 1978 movies and I would expect the same of you. I also expect that you not do it to other people.

I like Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, but those are the only Polanski movies that I like.
Mr. Television 10-08-2005, 10:45 PM I don't like Polanski as a person but I did like Rosemary's Baby and Frantic. One of these days I should see Chinatown.
Mysty Eyes 10-08-2005, 10:59 PM Anything with Tom Cruise.
Even films like Rain Man, with Dustin Hoffman (one of my favorites); though I saw the film years ago, I still can't bring myself to watch it again. Sad.
OJ Simpson... 'nuff said.
The Chauffeur 10-08-2005, 11:08 PM Ben Stiller, he's just not so funny to me. Everytime I see a movie he's in I feel like I'm seeing the same movie over and over.
Mr. Television 10-08-2005, 11:21 PM The one person who's movies I can't stand is Barbara Streisand.

Ben Stiller...he is such a moron and so damn goofy looking, boring and dull
Adam Sandler...same character no matter what role he plays...he is basically playing himself over and over and over
snl 70s show fan 10-10-2005, 03:33 AM bette midler i cant stand anything she does
Adam Sandler.
I just don't get it.
I've never been a fan of the Ferrelly (sp?) brothers either. Gross out humor doesn't appeal to me.
CliffClavin 10-10-2005, 11:58 AM I guess I like everybody except for Barbara Streisand.
Brian Damage 10-10-2005, 12:16 PM Anything with Roman Polanski or Oliver Stone.
webuster 10-10-2005, 12:46 PM Lol, two people whose films I love are being boycotted here! Streisand and Midler.
I've never seen an entire Tom Cruise movie- he's just very cocky and irritating in everything he attempts.

i know it's just acting, but yeah, especially in Top Gun, it's just sooo damn annoying. Why must there always be that?
Mysty Eyes 10-10-2005, 03:31 PM Another came to mind: Vanessa Marcil... she turns my stomach.
LadyBee 10-10-2005, 04:32 PM Robert Altman. I've only seen a handful of his flicks and they all seem so cynical, soulless - not to mention boring. I just don't get the raves his films get.
Anything with character actor Ron Eldard. He was a little to good in "Bastard Out of Carolina". I hated his guts in that movie, so much so, that it bled over into real life. He may the nicest guy in person but what he did in that movie... just disturbing. *sigh*
The Chauffeur 10-10-2005, 05:24 PM Eva Longoria grates my nerves a bit
Nighthawk76 10-10-2005, 05:29 PM Brad Pitt

Steve M. 10-30-2005, 10:27 PM Sylvester Stallone. The Rocky movies fueled racism, and the Rambo movies fueled xenophobia.
Plus Arnold Schwarzenegger. His movies fueled his political career. :p
Brian 10-31-2005, 02:39 AM I can see Rocky IV fueling racism but how do the other movies do it?
Steve M. 10-31-2005, 10:29 PM I can see Rocky IV fueling racism but how do the other movies do it?
Rocky II fueled racism becasue, as Joe Queenan explained, it introduced the concept of virtual bravado; if white boxers couldn't beat black boxers in the ring in real life, perhaps white people would pay to see a white boxer beat a black boxer in the ring on the big screen. (in the original Rocky, Rocky Balboa lost to Apollo Creed, who represented the boxer white people loved to hate, Muhammad Ali.) Rocky III brought back Apollo Creed as a mainstream, likeable, waspified African-American, but filled the void of a brutish black villain with a Leon Spinks surrogate, Clubber Lang, who gets Rocky to fight him by talking trash to Adrian.
Rocky IV, like the Rambo sequels, fueled xenophobia. Ooh, Rocky is going up against a big, bad Russian boxer! He's a killing machine! But of course - he's RUSSIAN!!!!
And of course , the Russian guy lost.
On a boxing match taking place on December 25.
Damn Commies - no repsect for Christmas Day! :santa:

You are the only person I have ever heard say that Rocky movies fueled racism.

Rocky II also reaffirmed, as Joe Queenan wrote, everything his generation supposedly fought to get rid of - the myth of the lovable goombah, the charm of the seriously unlettered, wrapping oneself in the American flag, and the romance of the Mafia.

Were you mugged by a group of Italians or something, because you've had some pretty negative things to say about them lately.

No, it's just that ALito is giving New Jersey Italian-Americans a bad name, and he's only the latest to do so. The "myth of the lovable goombah" quote is directly from Joe Queenan. And, truth by told, Stallone is the living embodiment of the moron movie genre. He's the Woody Allen of moron movies.
By the way, you should see what Woody does to Italian-Americans in his movies!

Forget that!!! Look and see what Woody did to his former love, Mia Farrow. He adopted a child with her and then he had sex and then MARRIED THAT CHILD!!!!! SICK SICK SICK Bastard!!!!
By the way, you should see what Woody does to Italian-Americans in his movies!
To be fair, Woody has trashed lots of nationalities and religions in his films.
;)
Steve M. 11-02-2005, 10:16 PM Yes, and he's faulted for not including blacks, Hispanics, or Asians in his all-white New York. That - and the scandal Irene alluded to - is a reason a lot of people can't bring themselves to see his movies. Except the French.
Mel Brooks, by the way, has made fun of all kinds of ethnic groups, including Jews - and he's Jewish!

I love Mel Brooks. He is awesome. if one can make fun of themselves when making fun of others, then, that is nothing to cry abt. He is a charmer.
BTW, Woody Allen has stated that he "has a paternal closeness to his wife."
omg: :baby: :baby: :loveu puke: puke:
rusyd 11-09-2005, 08:40 PM I like Woody Allen movies, but can't watch them anymore since the whole Mia Farrow thing. He is disgusting.
ekkostar 02-07-2006, 05:30 PM Madonna. Mariah Carey.

Madonna isn't AS bad an actress as credited for, though she isn't great either. I think you're only as good as your script. Madonna has shown herself to be an "okay" actress in movies that have decent scripts (Desperately Seeking Susan, A League Of Their Own, Evita) but at the same time, almost all of the bad movies she's been in would've been clunkers even if she never agreed to star in them. The Next Best Thing was originally planned as a Julia Roberts vehicle, even with Julia, the script still sucked and so would've the movie. I did however love Who's That Girl, it was a "bad movie" but she was so cute, funny and charismatic there and the movie was appealing even if poorly written. She got by on that one with charisma.

Ellen was on Jay Leno talking about it last night.
