Converting a tv show not good in quality? Just wondering if some shows should stay on VHS?

Yeah i have noticed some pixelization too with some shows. I can handle one 3 sec freeze during a 30 or 60 min program but anymore than that I'm looking for a replacement

I don't think the quality of the tape is the cause. There still seem to be a lot of compatibility problems between recorders/burners, blank media, and players. Discs that play fine on my equipment can have freeze-ups or even be unplayable on somebody else's. It doesn't happen a lot, but I think it happens more than it should for a technology that has been around for a few years. If I had to put the blame in one place, it would be the lack of quality control in the manufacturing of blank media.

The blank media you are using is certainly the cause of any freeze problems as some blank DVD media is just plain useless when it comes to recording excellence. It is best to always use a professional grade media and this will eliminate all the freeze problems in almost all cases. There are other problems that could occur but the type of blank media used would result for 95 plus percent of the problems.

There's another thing that puzzles me about compatibility. One of our standalone DVD players is ~8 years old. It plays commercial discs just fine. But if I want to use it to play any home burned DVDs I get in trade or buy, I have to make a copy first on my computer because the only "book type" of DVDs it plays is DVD-ROM. This is the book type of commercial discs & even more compatible than DVD-Rs. Yet, I have to buy specific burners in order to burn DVD-ROMs. I had to get a specific Pioneer model & flash it to a Piodata and my other burner is a BenQ (BenQs default to DVD-ROM - good for them!!!) Other than BenQ, I have yet to figure out why most burners don't burn DVD-ROMs by default, since they are the most compatible type. :confused:

DVD trading has its drawbacks, but once you get on the bandwagon, you will be glad you did. Shipping alone will save you a bundle.

Stick with a decent brand of DVDs and a DVD recorder with a hard drive, and you'll be a happy camper.

Plus (if it's done using a computer) a copy of a dvdr is identical to the original. So my dvdr creations stay clear and crisp, like the original. Not like tape, where each generation degrades.

And the best reason for using dvd is not having to put up with those annoying, annoying dropouts found in tapes. I am wondering if freezing only occurs when its vhs to dvd? Maybe the dropouts or flaws in the tapes can cause the freeze?

Would that be a Sony DVD Recorder and Sony Blank DVD"s?

Sony's are a good brand, from what I've heard, though I'm a staunch Panasonic girl.

For blanks, I currently use Prodiscs or on-sale name brands.
