When I look at other sites I see all kinds of bad stuff written about the show. Bonnie Franklin seems to be the #1 reason why people have bad memories of this show. Was she REALLY that bad? I don't think she was. Everybody talks about how much of a whiny irritating b*tch she was. LOL

We were kids in school when the show was originally on and I remember everyone never having a good word to say about Bonnie Franklin. With kids its unusual for them to have such a strong reaction to someone. Though we all loved and watched the show they all disliked her strongly for some reason. Was she ever in any other TV shows or Movies? I do like it if she loves animals as I am an animal advocate so she must have some good in her heart if she is a true animal lover. Happy Fourth Of July to all!!! :) PS I do DVR the shows on Logo now from Direct TV and love watching them !

Are we talking Bonnie Franklin or Ann Romano? I personally have no idea what Bonnie was like in real life. As for Ann, while she obviously had a temper, she had a good heart, and if you watch closely, she usually calmed down as quick as she got mad. But yeah, I could see how she might upset small children and animals.

I watched the show as a child, and didn't find Ann or Bonnie annoying or terrifying. Having mostly viewed innocuous sitcoms, I do remember being shocked when Ann slapped Alex, but I didn't hold it against Ann Romano or Bonnie Franklin.
Obviously, though, as Solanis pointed, there were kids that she put off.

She was a whiner on the show and behind the scenes. Who knows why this relatively unknown actress got so much power to control the scripts and the cast but maybe her efforts did improve the show in the long run. Getting rid of Ginny Wroblicki was a mercy kill.

In the first season especially Bonnie Franklin chewed the scenery and played it too broadly (per her theatrical training) but eventually settled down and had many impressive acting moments when she held back her need to overplay like in "The Married Man" arc where her character experienced self doubt, guilt, humiliation and ultimately realized she would never be that pathetic again over a man and got her self esteem back.

As for Ann Romano.

She liked dogs (maybe not so much, she sent them back!) and warm chocolate chip cookies and using the Lord's name in vain to get a laugh.

Also she took Alex Handris in when his own mother gave him up after his father was killed. How sadistic was Felicia to do that to her child? No wonder he became unhinged in a few episodes.

I digress. ;)

The comment I made was directed about Bonnie Franklin. I know even when we were older and out of school I had friends that disliked her and found her annoying in reruns later on. I should have thought of looking on the IMDB I use that all of the time! Anyway I'm glad some people joined in and spoke up about it. I think now that I'm older watching the reruns her acting is just way over the top ,seems she would be the one that would have to have the limelight. Sort of like Linda Lavin on Alice and that whole ordeal. Have a great week all

I know what you mean. Sometimes I think her acting nicely captured a "yeah, I'm a liberated woman, but totally in over my head" feel, and at other times, a scene grabbing "I'm the star" feel. Overall I like Ann/Bonnie, but as you can see most of the retrospective love for this show is for Val and Mike, and, if I may be so bold, Glenn!:). Hope you have a great week too, and thanks for posting!

I've never had a problem with Bonnie Franklin's acting on this show, I think she did a decent enough job and portrayed the Ann Romano character the way she was intended to be played. Feisty personality, occasionally quick tempered but with a good heart. She loved her two daughters and was a good mother to them. She gave Alex a home after his father died and his mom rejected him. And last but certainly not least, she was cute looking during the early seasons when she had the longer hair. :eyes:

Howdy Bonnie  I'm doing OK, hanging in there. How are things with you?

Thanks for mentioning the LOGO airings, when Antenna TV was showing the episodes regularly I recorded and saved a bunch of them on my DVR and I watch those occasionally.

Yeah!!! But with LOGO if you blink you will miss them!! Being they play like 4-6 eps. at a time /in a day! The cycle goes really FAST!!!! Cool for me cause they get to the Max eps quicker!!! LOL!!! :D:heart: ! But really it goes so fast and it gets to like you are really seeing it over and over again too quickly!!!

But one good thing is , they are leaving in some scenes that Antenna has cut out,;) but than also I've noticed LOGO also does that! Some scenes I have seen on Antenna are cut out in the LOGO version!

Unfortunately, regardless of what TV station is airing ODAAT, the episodes will probably be edited. The best chance to see unedited episodes is if the complete series is released on DVD. I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet. It's a Norman Lear sitcom, 9 seasons, 200 episodes, same duration of time like All In The Family, but all that's been issued so far on DVD is the 1st season which is a short season with only 15 episodes. I don't know, maybe someday the rest of the series will be released.

I know!!! I'm really surprised at least a couple more Seasons other than Season 1 aren't released on DVD!!! I mean it was a pretty popular show, on for many years!!! ;) And I understand maybe the later seasons not being as popular as the earlier seasons!;) But for my own personal (Max) reasons I'd love to see Season's 5, 7, 8 and 9 released!!!:) I would SURELY get those!!! :) :D

No Max AT ALL!!:( Zero, Zilch, Nada !!! :( That was when MacKenzie was fired. And him being her Husband they figured there wasn't a place for him without his wife Julie . :( They were supposed to had moved to Houston ! Than Season 7, Mack was hired back and Michael came back too. It was so cool that when she was fired again in Season 9, they let Michael stay on in the show without her  !!! :)

Mackenzie's addiction problems weren't Michael's fault, I agree it was good they kept him on the show in the 9th season.

Bonnie Franklin never toned down her acting from the stage for the camera. Longtime director Alan Rafkin wrote a book years back that went into depth about working on the show. He had seen her a few years before the show in some theater production and was unimpressed. Said Bonnie came from the slapping school of acting, where everything was emphasized with a hit to knee, or a bang on the table. In the show's last season, Bonnie told everyone she was leaving TV to do major roles on Broadway.

Bonnie Franklin the unknown actress at the beginning of this show was a stellar choice once again by Norman Lear. Don’t know a whole lot about her personally, but she was an excellent Ann Romano. Whatever Norman Lear had in mind for this character, Bonnie Franklin pulled it off. If she overacted, it was effective enough to keep the series going for 9 seasons.

There was some episode where it was Ann’s birthday and a big part of the episode talking to herself and giving herself a pep talk. I remember how obnoxious she was even all these years later.

I find Ann pretty annoying. Maybe it's all her flipping out, or the times she slaps her kids.
