View Full Version : Opie The Birdman IS NOT!!! The Best Tags Episode
teddybare 10-03-2005, 01:45 PM Im sorry yall but IMPO Tvland dont know squat about tags and I honestly find it hard to believe Andy Griffith or Don Knotts thinks Opie the Birdman is the best tags episode of all time. Now Ron Howard probably does because he starred in it.I also cant believe the many tags fans would go to tvland.com and vote for Opie The Birdman.
IMPO and I feel like alot of you would agree that alot of the good episodes werent even in the top 10.
The best ever episode for me was Man in a Hurry that episode was hilarious.
The Jim Linsey guitar player episodes are another favorites of mine. Ok what do yall think am I on the mark or wrong

yeah I have to agree with you about Man in A Hurry being the best, but Opie the Birdman should still be in the top 10 though.

The Jim Linsey guitar player episodes are another favorites of mine. Ok what do yall think am I on the mark or wrongI beg to differ. There are many, many fans who believe Opie the Birdman is the best episode of the series and with good reason. The final scene is considered one of the best in TV history by critics. This episode had a lot of substance in addition to comedy. It hit on all cylinders. The scene with Andy and Opie in Opie's bedroom where Andy tells him "You just listen to that for a while." is very powerful, especially if you ever had that kind of experience as a kid. There are many episodes in this series that are worthy of being called "The Best." Opie the Birdman is certainly one of them. And remember, that countdown was of the casts favorites. They weren't the ones the fans or the cast were saying were the best.
Opie the Birdman is in my top five. I also believe Man in A Hurry is in that top five as well as Mr. McBeevee, The Pickle Story, The Big House... there are so many of "best" quality that a "Ten Best" is bound to leave out many episodes that are worthy of top status.
JeffRuss1972 10-03-2005, 11:39 PM "Man In a Hurry" is probably my favorite episode, but Opie the Birdman is in the top 5 for me. There's a lot of energy in that episode.
teddybare 10-04-2005, 03:25 AM What Im hearing from you alll who like opie the birdman is that you like the comedy and the emotional dramatic scenes that are mixed in the episode. Kinda like the dramatic emorional scenes in the first tags episode when Aunt Bea comes to live with them. Where opie blames her for his bird dickie leaving then running out crying the next morning begging her to stay crying
hoosierelvisfan 10-04-2005, 05:56 AM I agree with the reasons that Americansportz gives for why the episode is considered to be so powerful because it's so dramatic, etc. But honestly, I personally don't watch TAGS for powerful drama. I watch it because it's funny. And the Don Knotts years are the best for that reason. After Don left, the shows just became, IMHO, horrible. I can't stand watching many of the Howard Sprauge episodes, for example.

Respectfully,

DutchI'm the same. I watch TAGS mainly for the great comedy Don Knotts and the cast of characters creates. But, you need some drama in there so the comedy will work and there were a lot of TAGS eps that used drama very effectively. The writers for that show were phenominal and could write great drama and comedy. When you combine that with great character actors and the legendary Don Knotts, plus great timing between Andy and Don, you've got yourself a great show.
teddybare 10-04-2005, 11:45 AM I agree with everyone too I watch tags for the classic comedy. if I wanted good drama I would watch a show like Gunsmoke etc., Another reason I watch tags is I grew up and still live in a small town Martinsville Va and Im old enough to recall and relate to alot of the small town life portrayed on tags
nerrad 10-05-2005, 07:52 AM My favorite episode is the Opie three wish show.
Angelique 2 10-07-2005, 12:47 AM My favorites in no special order are
Convicts At Large
Barney's First Car
Three Wishes For Opie
I never cared for the birdman episode.
Eidolon 10-08-2005, 05:38 PM My favorites with Barney are so numerous but when he decided that another police vehicle was needed and he bought the cycle and side car, now that was funny:lol:  Mr. McBeevee was my favorite Opie/Andy episode...
danpfd 11-03-2005, 09:57 AM It's so hard to rate a best TAGS episode of all-time (there's so many great ones!)... Opie the Birdman is certainly one of the all-time best, not just for the drama and touching story, but let's not forget the hilarious part when Barney says that he and the birds can understand each other and Andy says "Winken will tell Blinken, Blinken will tell Nod, and Nod will tell Barney!!"
That still cracks me up after all these years!
Bullet 11-05-2005, 08:46 PM There are so many great TAGS episodes. I did like the episodes with Howard, but didn't like the episodes with Warren. I loved the way that Floyd was in the first 2 seasons. It is so sad that he had a stroke. I'm glad he was still able to work in the color years, but he wasn't as funny. I think one of the funniest in additions to the ones mentioned are Barney and the Choir, and the episode where Andy and Barney made Aunt Bee mad by calling her and the other women gossips so they planted suspicion in Andy and Barney's minds about a shoe salesman.
I would also like to say that it is very sad after watching these episodes and seeing these characters being so funny and so young to realize how many of these great actors have left us.
caladon 11-15-2005, 05:27 PM I agree; "Man In A Hurry" is also my personal No. 1 pick. I love the way the story shows how Mr. Tucker eventually succumbs to Mayberry's friendly and calm lifestyle. The story cleverly and gently takes him from frustration to relaxation. And the ending shot of him asleep in the front porch rocker; having fallen asleep while trying to peel an apple without breaking the peel says it all; Mr. Tucker has learned how to relax; and may just end up taking a bit of Mayberry with him when he leaves.
