Chair, Bed or Couch because she was pregnant, and then I thought about it. maybe if they didn;t care about showing she was pregnant, they would have had to write in another child on the show and maybe they didn;t want to take that angle. But if you notice during season 3(which is the season on N@N right now) she is not seen walking at all, she is either standing behind something, or under the covers in the bed. Anything to hide that stomach.

considering they eventually took the route to bring in Olivia and Winnie/Nelson to replace Rudy as the cute one, they should've written Clair in as pregnant. There would've been as many years between Rudy and baby as there was between Vanessa and Rudy.

I remember reading an article that was published in 1986 where Cosby and the producers said that 5 kids was enough and they didn't want to bring in another child, but you are all right that they did eventually basically replace Rudy as the cute little kid with Olivia and Olivia would've been the same age as Phylicia Rashad's child. I think it would've been a bit strange for Cliff the obstetrician to have his own wife be pregnant- I think that the storylines would've been too cliched if they went that route. Basically in a sitcom when a character is pregnant the storylines are: anxiety about the baby and the very special birth episode where the overprepared parents (esp the father) freaks out a la Elvin in the birth of the twins episodes and the episode with John Ritter and his wife in season 7.

It was obvious that Phylicia was expecting. Her face was puffed up and there were about three episodes where she was walking. The worse hiding they did when she was sitting behind a huge stuffed animal bear. That was too obvious. Her absence was felt when she was gone in that season.
