View Full Version : Do you or have you ever had any superstitions?
Ireneparalegal 09-24-2005, 11:25 PM I have this superstition abt the number 6. I won't buy six apples. I will buy 1,2,3,4,5,7 or more apples. Never six. Never six oranges, never 6 pack of soda. I will buy two six packs or those new boxes of soda that fit in your refrigerator (those long boxes). I have always felt this way. I can't explain it other than I associate that number with bad luck.
MsOrange 09-24-2005, 11:50 PM Black cats. Anytime a "black cat crosses my path" i have to draw an X. My windshield in my car will have "X's" finger prints all over it. My mom got me started when I was very little, and it kind of stuck.

You know, I always think of that superstition when I see a black cat cross my path. I don't do anything, but I can't help but think of that superstition and think "should I do something? If I don't, something might happen." It's weird.
When I was young I would avoid stepping on cracks in the sidewalk.
Hollow 09-25-2005, 02:48 AM ever since i learned the one about picking your feet up when you cross railroad tracks in a car years ago i've been afraid i'd be doing it all the time until i started driving. and i was right. i'm always tempted to lift my foot up from the gas when i cross over a railroad track but i manage to refrain from it.
Nighthawk76 09-25-2005, 04:33 AM I have a fear of sitting at a booth in resturants. I'm not sure why. But when I go out to eat, I always make sure they sit me at a table.
peter may 09-25-2005, 05:30 AM Dont walk under ladders
Kay Scarpetta 09-25-2005, 09:27 AM I don't look at mirrors in the dark. I was spooked at a young age about that whole Bloody Mary crap.
I'm also afraid of breaking mirrors. When I was three, my grandmother broke a mirror when I was at her house. 7 years later, she died. I'll always remember the mirror incident, because I got cut picking up a shard. I had no idea it was exactly 7 years later that she died until I calculated it in English the other day. Scared the **** out of me.
cablejockey 09-25-2005, 10:24 AM When I was a child, I used to think the superstitions my mother beleieved in were silly. She wouldn't allow a hat on a bed--no idea what that is supposed to do, no umbrella could be opened indoors, and something about certain birds gave her the willies. As I got older, I find myself not opening umbrellas, knocking on wood, and other assorted superstitions. You just get the feeling as you get older--why take any chances!
The Chauffeur 09-25-2005, 10:26 AM Smack the car roof 2x for good luck under a yellow light, X it out if the light turns red.. that is super bad luck if ya don't
MissZero 09-25-2005, 10:55 AM well i always knock on wood..and altely the black cat thing has been bothering me..in the last 3 days 7 have crossed my path (6 when i was with my one friends)

Number 9 Dream 09-25-2005, 12:02 PM Hmm, I do knock on wood a lot....I also get spooked if a black cat passes in front of me ( which is a lot since I have a black cat at home ).
I also get freaked looking in to mirrors at night too.
Ireneparalegal 09-25-2005, 12:07 PM Wow I really love reading these posts. I never heard of the mirror in the dark thing neither did I ever hear abt the knocking when there's a yellow/red light...interesting.
I used to do the salt over your shoulder thing when salt was spilled, but then when I heard how that started, I stopped doing it. Apparently salt was very valuable to the Romans so spilling it back then is like flushing money down the toilet.
Janice 09-25-2005, 12:19 PM I knock on wood a lot. An example: My husband's had two angioplasties in the last 10 years, but has never had a heart attack (knock wood). If I tell anyone that, I have to knock on wood, even if I have to get up and find a piece of wood to knock on. Luckily my computer desk is made of wood because I just knocked on it as I wrote this post.
robyrob 09-25-2005, 06:15 PM yep, corn - i gotta eat it on the COB only, it just seems soo wrong to eat it any other way (unless its Doritos or something)
sheep, especially when they make that horrific sound they make, I have to cover my ears and run screaming for cover
I dunno if it could be considered a "superstition or not, but I have to always say "Hello" to every animal in the room, usuall most animals will come to me to say hello anyways :D :cat: :dog:

I use to be superstitious on the opening the umbrella up inside the house. My mother had this old superstition about if you sweep up the house a lot, you are sweeping up unwanted company. LOL

Which made for a pretty funny wedding considering we were married in the mountains next to a sheep farm :rotflmao:

Hmmmm...sweeping up means you are sweeping up unwanted company. Hey, interesting. See, that's what I mean, there are so many superstitions that I have never heard of.
