On this day in 1973 Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash. He was only 30 years old.

Another one great one missed. :( peacesign:

I love all his music and they play his music all the time on the radio. He is missed. He was such a talented guy.

He was equally adept at gritty sketches of urban life ("Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "You Don't Mess Around With Jim") and sensitive ballads ("Operator," "Time In a Bottle"), plus he was great at satire like "Workin' At the Car Wash Blues." His best work was still ahead of him went his plane went down on September 20, 1973. :(

Not sure if you know the story of Leroy Brown. Croce wrote the song about a guy he knew in the military. This guy was not liking the military and he went AWOL, but when payday came he came back. I think that is how it went, but VH1 show Croce playing the song live and he explained it that way. But much better than I did. I think you can find the song performed on DVD and explained better.

He was a very talented songwriter.

I heard that story. The "meaner than a junkyard dog" part came from a mean guard dog Croce and a friend saw in Allentown, Pennsylvania, walking down a street. "He's meaner than a junkyard dog!" Croce declared.

By the way, are Croce's original three studio albums ever going to be released on CD?

Photographs and Memories, by the way, is a solid greatest-hits compilation, but to get his Christmas song "It Doesn't Have To Be That Way," look for Time In a Bottle - Jim Croce's Greatest Love Songs.

Im a guy who generally HATES ballads...but, Time in a bottle makes me cry and always will, its simply the ESSENCE of the feeling "love", and what it means when 2 people become one heart . The way you want to freeze that moment forever and never let it go.
