I looked up on the CBS-FM Message Board regarding the version of "Lola" by the Kinks. Which version do you like?

I just heard the original version this morning, that Coca-Cola threatened legal action if they didn't change it. I guess I don't have a preference, but some given the context of the song, cherry cola seems more
*festive*.

The first version I heard was the cherry cola one so that's the one I'm used to.

You're right, the original version was banned by the BBC because of the soft drink. The Kinks redid the song using the words "Cherry Cola" instead of "Coca-Cola". Coca-Cola is a soft drink.

I think Coca - Cola sounds better rythmically, but that's just me :p

my my how times change.... Nowadays companies like McDonalds WANT to be endorsed in songs, yet in the 1970's, Coke balked at it's name used in the song? You'd think Coke would've wanted The Kinks to do a commercial for them using the song to promote Coke.

Well maybe not when it was about a transvestite.

Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man

Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola

These companies go way overboard "protecting" their trademarks. How would mention of their product endanger the sales? It's like the NFL and the two words, Super Bowl.

Oops--did i dare mention it?

As for the song itself, it's great, I don't care which version it is. I also don't go into deep thinking mode about the walked/takled man/woman lyrics.

It was no. 9 in the US, the Hits album probably came out before that 1970 song. Most of their earlier hits didn't come out in stereo (Shel Talmy, their producer, has said Pye Records was too cheap to spring for stereo, early on), so the mono release makes sense.

According to Wikipedia it was BBC policy that got them to edit in the cherry cola version. The other controversial lyrics got some radio stations to fade the song early.
