John Lennon, the Beatle was shot down on December 8th of that year outside his apartment. And, me, being a Beatles fan, I feel it was a really bad year. But, maybe it was a better year for other people. It was a very bad year Among the other disasters of 1980: Fifty-two Americans began and ended the year being held hostage by Islamic fundamentalists in Iran. Mount Saint Helens blew in Washington State. Ronald Reagan was elected President, beginning a period of right-wing domiantion in America that continues to this day. We had a very bad recession. Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died, and Zep broke up as a result. President Carter made the United States Olympic team boycott the Moscow Olypmics to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, forcing several Olympic hopefuls to forego their dreams of glory. Among the unlucky athletes: gymnast Kurt Thomas, runner Mary Decker, and runner/future Weather Channel OCM Vivian Brown. And by the way, the U.S.S.R. didn't leave Afghanistan until 1989, the Soviets boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, and the Afghans expressed their gratitude by harboring Osama bin Laden. Nice going, Jimmy. Popular music was a disaster even without the deaths of Lennon and Bonham. The peppiest singles of the year actually came from Eddie Rabbitt! Eddie Rabbitt!! Four words - Pink Lady and Jeff. :barf: I was fourteen in 1980. One day I was a serious adult, the next I was a five-year-old. Puberty sucks! Unless you were a fan of Olympic ice hockey or the Philadelphia Phillies (they won the World Series that year), 1980 completely blew. :( Living In a '70's Dream 09-14-2005, 09:05 PM In 1980, I had an odd obsession on the cartoon Family Circus (I collected all of Bil Keane's books) and also I had a huge crush on Richie Cunningham...you would thought I was five years old in 1980 instead of being ten years old.. Tuesday Weld 09-14-2005, 09:09 PM Hey Tara  Southern Hellraiser 09-14-2005, 09:23 PM In 1980, I had an odd obsession on the cartoon Family Circus (I collected all of Bil Keane's books) and also I had a huge crush on Richie Cunningham...you would thought I was five years old in 1980 instead of being ten years old.. I sure would like to have those Family Circus books. The Chauffeur 09-15-2005, 04:09 PM In 1980, I had an odd obsession on the cartoon Family Circus (I collected all of Bil Keane's books) and also I had a huge crush on Richie Cunningham...you would thought I was five years old in 1980 instead of being ten years old.. I had that same obsession with the Family Circus too!! Moonlight Lady 09-15-2005, 04:22 PM In 1980, I was obsessed with Welcome Back Kotter, John Travolta and Grease as well was Robert Hegyes. Family Circus was great, that was part of my Sunday ritual, reading that comic. Nighthawk76 09-15-2005, 08:22 PM When I think of 1980 I think of all the really talented people who died that year like Alfred Hitchcock, John Lennon, Steve McQueen, John Bonham, and Bon Scott. 1980 was a great year for movies like Dressed To Kill, Raging Bull, The Empire Strikes Back, The Watcher in the Woods, and The Shining. As far as I'm concerned personally, I was only a little four year old boy in 1980. I remember that spring my mom and I visited my grandparents in Arizona. What I remember most about that visit was that my grandma and grandpa lived next to this really nice lady who was really sick. She was actually dying of cancer. :( Of course, at four years old I didn't understand what cancer was or even that people could die. All I understood was that she didn't feel well. And I remember that she was really nice to me. Southern Hellraiser 09-15-2005, 08:53 PM you all are making me jealous. :crying: j/k. Tuesday Weld 09-15-2005, 09:14 PM  PZelda 09-16-2005, 01:13 AM  I'm trying to remember what I was doing in late 1984. probably watching MTV and talking on the phone. The video they were playing was "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. My parents never liked rock music so it was never played around the house. So seeing Bruce totally changed my life. I saved up enough money to go out and buy Born In The USA on record. Moonlight Lady 09-19-2005, 03:02 PM Does anyone remember the day they first seen MTV? Yep, My friend Jen and I just got done playing Intellivision and we wanted to see what was on TV and we found it while we were channel surfing. Pauley was always on the street outside clubs, while Julie was always inside the clubs. They played videos and did segments at the clubs all night every Friday. I believe it came on at 11pm and went off around 5am. I remember they wore the video to Jane Child's "I Don't Wanna Fall in Love" out when it came out around '89. Can't believe it been that long  Nighthawk76 09-19-2005, 11:13 PM That's the one! I remember they showed something about it on "I Love 1988" once. I used to watch Headbanger's Ball all the time. You were right and all I have to say is: I am so watching next week's episode. Ugh, that had to hurt. They were so close and then Pujols had to come in and make a homeroom. I was like, "You.. have got.. to be kidding me. Son of a bitch!" Cross your fingers Wednesday night, please! I missed you very much too, Sonny. Thank you again. :D dandelion wine 10-18-2005, 10:45 PM trying this again When I stopped by this morning, I was going to try to get Jon-Erik to say hello to y'all. John Lennon, the Beatle was shot down on December 8th of that year outside his apartment. And, me, being a Beatles fan, I feel it was a really bad year. But, maybe it was a better year for other people. Definitley not one of the good parts of 1980. |
