This is a very very old post. However Meridith Baxter Birney also played as the eldest daughter in the TV show "Family" ( with Kristy McNishol and Sada Thompson and Gary Frank and James Broderick).

In David Cassidy's autobiography he did write that Meridigh Baxter Birney was the one woman who he really felt he loved. She appeared on one Partridge Family episode and even though David Cassidy and Meridith Baxter dated a bit, she was not not as interested in him as he in her. She felt that he was too unavailable as a star who travels a lot and has lots of other women after him.
Reportedly David Cassidy felt very depressed that Meridith Baxter went on to marry David Birney (thus she got her name Meridith Baxter Birney).

Meridith Baxter already had two young children during the time she briefly dated David Cassidy in the 70s. He could have become their step father but the relationship did not work. Furthermore she was three years older than him. It was sort-of a situation in which he was a young boy in love with an older woman. Susan Dey was 3 years younger than David Cassidy and she had a huge crush on him but he was not interested in her as a girlfriend, just as a good friend.

The very very strange thing is that Meridith Baxter Birney came out as gay in 2009. She was past the age of 60 then. (Perhaps it could be said that that is the only explanation for a woman who was not interested in David Cassidy when he was interested in her).
A person just does not find out that s/he is gay after so many years.
It is like Bruce Jenner "suddenly" wanting to be a woman after he was 65.

Another strange thing is that Meridith Baxter Birney claimed that David Birney was actually abusive to her throughout their relationship. Or that is what I understand of what I read.
