LOS ANGELES (AP) - Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70. Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Aww, I love Gilligan's Island. This is a sad day!

What a shame.

I read a few times that Mr. Denver wasn't too thrilled that Gilligan made it difficult to find work, since he will always be associated with that show, but he created a character that will live forever in syndication and in the hearts of the fans who grew up watching that show.

Me, too. Of all the shows I watched growing up, Gillgan's Island is probably the most familiar show- the one I remember most when I saw it back in the '60s.

I can't believe Russell Johnson has outlived Bob Denver- never thought that would happen. Let's hope Russell is doing well and is with us for a while longer.

Gilligan's Island was one of the first sitcoms I remember watching as a kid. It was in syndication of course. Gilligan was my favorite character. It's a shame that he couldn't find other work after the show ended. As a matter of fact, I found out at work. They told me, "Hey, did you know Gilligan died."

What a bummer. . . . It only shows how far sixties televison is receding in the past. Gone as of now are Bob Denver, Jim Backus, Buddy Ebsen, Fred Gwynne, and just about the entire cast of Bewitched.

I wasn't a HUGE fan of GI but I thought it was a great show and enjoyed watching it whenever I saw the reruns.

However, I hate that the media only talks about Gilligan's Island. I personally preferred The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis, where he played Maynard G. Krebs. Crediting Gilligan and not Maynard would be like when Ron Howard goes, only mentioning Richie and not Opie, or vice versa.

'Gilligan' Tribute Features Classic Game Show Appearances on 'BEAT THE CLOCK' and 'PASSWORD'

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 6 -- GSN will be airing a tribute to Bob Denver, who portrayed the first mate Gilligan on "Gilligan's Island". Denver passed away Friday at the age of 70. GSN airs two game shows that featured Denver on Friday, September 9 with "BEAT THE CLOCK" at 3 AM ET/PT and "PASSWORD" at 3:30 AM ET/PT.

Denver is best known for playing the title role in the 1960's television show "Gilligan's Island" and for his earlier work in television playing Maynard G. Krebs in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." In addition to starring in the popular television series, Denver also appeared in several movies.

Denver is featured on the BEAT THE CLOCK episode from 1972 and PASSWORD from 1966. The tribute shows are in color, but will be shown during GSN's black and white programming block.

It's something how a how a show with only a three year run, 40 years ago lives on. Bob Denver brought Gilligan to life. Seventy years old. Not too old, the poor guy.
