Aw - sorry to hear that, but it doesn't surprise me. I know he's been in rough shape for a while now.

Little Buddy's in the big Lagoon in the sky. Rest in peace Bob. I'll always think of you as that young, skinny Gilligan driving the Skipper nuts. I'll bet he saved your bunk for you. :(

Terrible news! Shocking, too. I'm sure there will be tributes for him in the coming days. Will let everyone know.

LOS ANGELES -
Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina of complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer, his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, told The Associated Press. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Denver had also undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year.

Denver's wife, Dreama, and his children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin were with him when he died.

"He was my everything and I will love him forever," Dreama Denver said in a statement.

Denver's signature role was Gilligan. But he was already known to TV audiences for another iconic character, that of Maynard G. Krebs, the bearded beatnik friend of
Dwayne Hickman's Dobie in the "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which aired from 1959 to 1963.

"Gilligan's Island" lasted on CBS from 1964 to 1967, and it was revived in later seasons with three high-rated TV movies. It was a Robinson Crusoe story about seven disparate travelers who are marooned on a deserted Pacific Island after their small boat was wrecked in a storm.

The cast: Alan Hale Jr., as Skipper Jonas Grumby; Bob Denver, as his klutzy assistant Gilligan; Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer, as rich snobs Thurston and Lovey Howell;
Tina Louise, as bosomy movie star Ginger Grant; Russell Johnson, as egghead science professor Roy Hinkley Jr.; and
Dawn Wells, as sweet-natured farm girl Mary Ann Summers.

TV critics hooted at "Gilligan's Island" as gag-ridden corn. Audiences adored its far-out comedy. Writer-creator Sherwood Schwartz insisted that the show had social meaning along with the laughs: "I knew that by assembling seven different people and forcing them to live together, the show would have great philosophical implications."

This is sad. I loved Gilligan when I was growing up. I loved the Rescue From Gilligan's Island movie most of all. In fact, I was on ebay last nighgt looking at cover art for the many releases they did of that movie.

I know Alan and Bob are together. They made a great team, and I loved the show. One of the only few shows before the 1980's that I watched. It will always be one of my favorites. Sherwood did a great job with it.

My thoughts go out to Bob's family, friends, and finally his co-workers. Most importantly from Gilligan's Island: Sherwood Shwartz, Russel Johnson, Dawn Wells, and Tina Louise.

He was great as Gilligan. I will host a tribute marathon of season three tonight in memory of the lil' buddy.

Episodes I'll watch will be posted here, they will all episodes that revolved solely around the little guy.

Damnit, why does it always have to happen to the good ones?

RIP Bob.

I liked him as Gilligan, but I REALLY liked him in his series before Gilligan's Island, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, where he played Maynard G. Krebs. His famous line "Work?!?" was the best.

I'm so sad. I have always loved Bob. I was so LUCKY to meet him. He was promoting one of his books in the 90's and he was just down-to-earth. He was at Boarders in Richmond. He had his red shirt and white hat from when he played Gilligan. He also had jeans and had a gray blazer on top of his red shirt. My dad took pictures. Those pictures are now going to be memories. :(

RIP. Bob. Your now with the Skipper, and Mr. & Mrs. Howell.

I was without electricity for about a week thanks to Hurricane Katrina and so had to catch up on about 8 threads on this board when the power came back on yesterday. Since there was no mention of Bob dying, I can only guess that the family waited until today to release the news. My sister, who knows what a big fan I am, called me from her cel phone as soon as she heard on her car radio. At first, I thought he had died today, but no...he died on Friday. I can understand why they waited-----when Alan Hale died they could hardly conduct the service where his ashes were poured into the ocean because of the noisy helicopters and other intrusive, insensitive things.

Like many many people who never met Bob, I still feel like I've lost a friend. It's hard to believe that he's gone. Thanks Bob for many laughs and many great memories----you were one of the very special ones.

I was saddened to hear of his passing today. I had met Bob about 6 or 7 years ago. I was up in West Virginia visiting someone and Bob happened to be at a local McDonalds getting something to drink. He was sitting there, reading a newspaper and noticed me staring at him.... He motioned for me to come sit down with him. I was thrilled that he didn't mind the attention. We talked for about an hour and a half. All about, country living, theatre, politics and lots of things..... we never mentioned Gilligan! He was so very kind and I appreciated it so much.

And a few years later, Bob contacted me via email about the 2 tv movies, THE CASTAWAYS ON GILLIGANS ISLAND and THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS ON GILLIGANS ISLAND. He knew that I had great copies of them, and asked me to send him copies.... He also put me in touch with Russell Johnson, and I sent "The Professor" copies as well. Both of them sent me some great autographed photos and told me they really enjoyed seeing the tv reunion movies again.

I know that I didn't really know him.... But I grew up with him, so his passing feels like the death of a close friend. Rest in Peace, little buddy.

"Gilligan's Island" wasn't only one of my favorites as a child (and still is today), Gilligan was also my favorite TV character of all time. I love the fact that he can remain a shy, lovable, person despite the fact that he was usually responsible for botching the various attempts to get the Castaways rescued. Some critics of "Gilligan's Island" don't understand it and will wonder why they even kept him around the island and put up with him despite the fact that he was always screwing up. I believe that it had to do with his personality, which wasn't unlike the real Bob Denver. As Dawn Wells said today in her tribute to Bob, he always messed up but you loved him anyway because he was so kind, sweet, and gentle that you couldn't help but love him, much as you might love a small child. Speaking of which, I once heard of "Gilligan's Island" being referred to as one of the best babysitters among TV series because children can watch it and laugh at the silly slapstick situations that the characters get into (usually Gilligan) and parents can feel safe knowing that the series in most cities gets a G rating, something that you rarely see in today's sitcoms. Thanks to the DVDs we can watch "Gilligan's Island" as often as we wish and it's one show that I never get tired of seeing. I absolutely loved both Bob Denver and Gilligan dearly and I miss him already.

I was so sorry to hear about him. I watched Gilligan in the 60's & r4e-runs throughout the yrs & also enjoyed re-runs of Dobiue Gillis. Gilligan lived Princeton, WV & had a great oldies station there Little Buddy Radio. Whenever we'd go thru Princeton, WV on the way to KY, we tune his oldies station in. We have a dvd of the first 2 eps of Gillian & we watched one of them this am in tribute to him. Rip...

A TRIBUTE TO EVERYBODY'S LIL' BUDDY.

I watched yesterday "The Secret of Gilligan's Island." and "Slave Girl.", since they were 2 of Bob's shining episodes of year three. It was a tribute to him, and I plan to do the same tonight with "Gilligan the Goddess." (final episode of the series) "Gilligan's Personal Magnetism." and "High Man on the Totem Pole."

Other nights following this one, these will be the ones I'll watch-

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE.
GILLIGAN GOES GUNG HO.
COURT-MARTIAL
TOPSY-TURVY.
THE INVASION.
RING AROUND GILLIGAN.
HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW.
THE HUNTER.
TAKE A DARE.
LOVEY'S SECRET ADMIRER.
and to conclude to the tribute, MAN WITH A NET.

Rest in peace, once again, Mr. Denver. Our hats are off to you, a talented, well rounded earthly guy. You were great, special, one of a kind. We all here at SitcomsOnline.com commend you lil' buddy.

Upon hearing this news yesterday my thoughts too take me back to the 60's when I was a kid. My brothers and sisters watched GI all the time. About 5 years ago, my dad was visiting when GI came on TV. He said"my gosh, is that show still on tv?"

Well yes it is and now I can show my kids(through the magic of dvd's) what a great show it was. Another generation of GI fans.

God Bless Gilligan!

This is one of the saddest moments in my entire life. Bob Denver seemed so young and alive on his TV shows. I don't care HOW long ago they were made, that was the way he seemed to me. I was devestated, just absolutely devestated when I heard he died. I felt like killing myself.

:brent

Bob Denver was the first boy I ever had a crush on, even before the Beatles or anything. For this reason, he will always have a very special place in my heart. I'll always remember his dark hair blowing in the wind, his delicate little face, his eyes more beautiful than the ocean with his long, dark eyelashes, his long, beautiful fingers, his soft, calming voice, his sweetness, his lovely smile, and of course how funny he was. He will always be my favorite actor. I blame the marijuana. People say marijuana isn't as bad as tobacco, but I don't believe that.

Great story, Lamont. It's nice to hear that Bob
was a good guy who didn't mind all the well
intentioned attention he got from fans. That's
what I've read but it's sometimes hard to know
if it's true. Bob was always reported as such a quiet and introspective guy that it seemed he
might be the type to be uncomfortable or even
dislike the attention. It's great that he took
such a sensible and appreciative attitude about
it all. He seemed a talented and likable guy and
that plays well on television. That's part of why we watched all these years. It's nice to know it was true. Thanks for all the laughs, Bob.

Talk about a ridiculous premise. The actors were all looking too old at that point anyway.

I have seen all three movies. I like them all. I have Rescue and Harlem on tape but I am missing The Castaways on. About the Gilligan's Resort tv spin off, that was the original plan Sherwood Schwartz had with the series after William Paley green lighted the show. Sherwood Schwartz said that if they loose audience that what happened on The Castaways... would be the series. Mr Paley was uncomfortable with the series. Lucky for us they never switched the series to that format.

"Rescue" is available on DVD but not "Castaways" or "Globetrotters". I've seen the first two, and while "Rescue" had a purpose (getting off the island although I wasn't too thrilled about them landing back on the same island at the end. I can still hear Mr. Howell say "THE SAME ISLAHND!!!" It just had a lack of closure when I wanted to castaways to live happily ever after). I happened to catch "Castaways" on TV, and since I'd never seen it, decided to go ahead and watch. *sigh* As much as I *really* hate to say it, it just wasn't that funny or that good. Tom Boseley from Happy Days was in it, and he had the only funny line "If it weren't for these beautiful documents, we wouldn't be able to afford this trip to this stupid island". Also, Bob dear, God bless him, but he really *was* getting a little too old to play the sweet, naive guy. Keeping the characters the exact same kind of people who are not allowed to grow or mature simply doesn't work after 15 years. Gilligan finds a young boy who is training in gymnastics and his parents are pushing him to make the Olympic team, which I thought was kind of ironic because Bob Denver was really very good at gymnastics when he was younger. :)

"Globetrotters" is one of the few Gilligan things that I've never seen (except maybe the first 20 minutes of it back when I was four years old, when it was new). So, I can't comment on that. I always wind up preferring the original series over the TV movies anyway.

Love,
Cynthia Marie
