The producers tried to have Willona and J.J trade insults with each other like Willona and James did when he was alive? Example, in the ep Hustle, Willona comes in with her Tennis Outfit on and J.J says-"That a fancy outfit for squatting flies"

Another example-Willona runs in to turn on the TV in the ep when J.J wins the lottery and J.J said-"take it easy willona, Captain Kangaroo is not on Yet" And Willona response was-"Negro Please"

Do you think that was a dumb idea to have J.J and willona insult each other like her and James?

JJ said "squatting or swatting flies to Willona?
Didn't Florida say that to her when she came out of her room and Willona asked her abt the outfit she was wearing?
I don't understand either why all of a sudden JJ was talking to Willona that way, she was his elder, supposedly the same age as his mom.
Florida taking jabs at Willona wasn't right either. I don't care how bad of a mood I am in, I don't go being mean or take jabs at my best girlfriend.

Yes it was odd for J.J to all of a sudden to start taking jabs at Willona-lol

Yeah, now that you mentioned that, I did think that was kinda strange that JJ was trying to make jokes about Willona. I think the writers did try to throw a few James' characteristics to JJ. Like when JJ called Thelma 'Baby Girl' in JJ's New Career pt. 1. Just didn't feel right. He was trying to fill James' shoes too much. :)

Hey now, Craftman, we are on the same wave lengths here. I heard JJ call her Baby Girl and right away I though of James. So the writers really had JJ put on the James' shoes. It doesn't make sense though, because who in real life would start doing that out of the blue?
JJ insulting or jabbing at Willona was not cool either. What were the writers thinking????

Well maybe baby girl was Thelma's nickname in the family, Florida has called her that also, JJ also calls her baby sister. And since he was kinda taking over the roll as man of the house, I don't see that as strange at all that he would call her that. And I don't think JJ was insulting Wilona, he was just making some smartass comments, unlike James. Everyone's a smartass every once and a while.

Yeah, I think that's more like it, JJ was making some smart mouth comments, like he always do.

J.J never had a smartass comment towrd Willona during the Amos Era, it was only when he left

Yeah, that's what I said. He respected her. He never jabbed at his mother or Willona. All of a sudden after James died, he starts up. It is obvious. No person would take on the persona of a dead person because that's normal. I don't know any man who took over the role of father after a father died and started acting like the father. They are themselves, the only difference is they take on their LATE FATHER'S TASKS. Not their mannerisms. I don't recall Flo calling Thelma Baby Girl. If that was her nickname, which it wasn't, the entire family would have called her that. That was James' personal pet name for her. Just like he called Flo "Baby" JJ "Junior" Michael "son" and
Willona "Rona Barrett of the projects".

Yes she has known JJ since he was a baby so I don't see anything wrong with that. They had known each other for over 20+ yrs. What's the big deal, it wasn't disrespectful, it was just all in fun.

But making smart comments to his mother's Best friend???????????????
I would never make smart ass comments to my mother's best friend NO MATTER WHAT. OMG. Retro, I am with you on this. If I ever went and said something sassy, sarcastic, out of turn, whatever to a family friend, regardless of how long they have been a family friend, I would have REGRETTED ASAP, for I knew I would not get away with it. One time I recall trying to be funny to my mom's friend and it got ugly. I didn't understand then, BUT I DO NOW!!!!!! I wouldn't even allow my girls to say anything remotely what JJ said to Willona. Willona was friend and family. Doesn't give JJ the right to do that. James did it because the characters were supposedly the same age and had known each other since high school. It was James' character at times to be rude, crude and loud.

What was so bad with what JJ said, I don't see it. "Take it easy Wilona, Captain Kangaroo is not on Yet" what's wrong with that. It's not like he said with a negative tone.

That to me was one of the funniest lines on the show ever.....The delivery was priceless.

Also...Florida was too damn good, so she made more cracks at Willona's, JJ's, and even Thelma's expense.

Remember she poured a pot of water over Carl's head...lol
