Mr. Monitor

I always found it strange that Mr. Cosby never wanted to be nominated for "Best Actor in a Comedy Series" during the heyday of The Cosby Show. I read that one year he graciously gave up his Emmy nomination so that Robert Guillaume, who played Benson, could win.
I always wondered about that.

I find that hard to believe, he did win a Golden Globe though. The Cosby Show also won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and Phylicia Rashad did win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
It's also common for actors not to submit themselves come Emmy time. In fact, after winning her 5th Emmy, Candice Bergen of Murphy Brown decided that she wasn't going to submit herself again.

He would have won at least once, but he already had 5 so it makes him look more generous to not put his name in. I think he was being sincere. He did the same thing with his later sitcom in the 90s. Phylicia never won though. She was nominated in the first 2 seasons, but lost to Jane Curtin and Betty White. 3 of the kids were nominanted too as were the grandparents and several guest stars (including Stevie Wonder and Sammy Davis).

Cos had already won three Emmys for his ground-breaking role on I SPY. I
think he just wanted to give another deserving black actor the same chance.
