Worth it for the hilarious hat shop scene in "Acrobats" alone. Dr. Jazz 01-26-2006, 01:33 AM I saw the I Married Joan collections, both volumes at Best Buy the other day. Just $6.99 apiece - that's a steal for one of TV's greatest masterpieces. I wish they would release more volumes :( Joan rules!! I never saw that show but I've heard a lot of great things about it. vashti1999 01-26-2006, 02:08 AM I saw the I Married Joan collections, both volumes at Best Buy the other day. Hey Jazz, I know it's not Fame or The White Shadow, but between us liking some of the same shows and knowing some other shows I like, do you think I could get into this? I've never seen I Married Joan. I don't think I even heard of it before I hit SitcomsOnline. tv star collector 01-26-2006, 09:24 AM Damn. Thats a good deal. I've been thinking of getting that one and Mr. Peepers. I never saw that show but I've heard a lot of great things about it. I should point out one big difference between I MARRIED JOAN and MR. PEEPERS. Joan Davis's series was filmed and rerun by NBC during the daytime for a few years. (It replaced HOWDY DOODY, which was moved to Saturday morning). Great show. MR. PEEPERS was also a great show. But, because it was live, it was never rerun. The only existing episodes, therefore, are what are called "kinescopes." A kinescope, basically, is a motion picture taken by pointing a camera at the television screen. Consequently, don't expect the picture to be as crisp and clear as a filmed or video-taped show. I found a video tape of one episode of MR. PEEPERS, and it is watchable. If you have seen the "lost" episodes of THE HONEYMOONERS, you know what to expect. Those are also kinescopes. I never saw that show but I've heard a lot of great things about it. Mr. Peepers is very funny and not like your average 50's sitcom. Wally Cox, Tony Randall & Jack Warden were all hilarious on that show  Dr. Jazz 01-26-2006, 03:47 PM Hey Jazz, I know it's not Fame or The White Shadow, but between us liking some of the same shows and knowing some other shows I like, do you think I could get into this? I've never seen I Married Joan. I don't think I even heard of it before I hit SitcomsOnline. Never heard of Joan before SO? If you like "I Love Lucy" then you would get a kick out of Joan. There are certain episodes that really stand out and Joan was even funnier than Lucy at times. Joan was like the alternative to Lucy, very similar (always in funny situations) yet funny in her own way. I watched IMJ on Nostalgia (now AmericanLife) years ago and now it airs weekdays at 10am on the local Pax/i station here. Joan is often referred to as a poor man's Lucy but I thought she was every bit as funny. It's a shame it only lasted 3 seasons. I personally think you would like I Married Joan since you like Lucy  TV Knowledge Fan 04-17-2006, 01:38 PM ...because Joan Davis suddenly fell ill in early 1955, and couldn't complete a full 39 episode season (she filmed only 20 episodes in the final season). NBC [and General Electric, her sponsor] would have liked to have had her finish out the season, because of the growing competition from ABC's "DISNEYLAND", but had to pad out the remainder of that season with repeats before pulling the show off in April of '55. treky 04-20-2006, 02:27 AM Mr. Peepers is very funny and not like your average 50's sitcom. Wally Cox, Tony Randall & Jack Warden were all hilarious on that show  yes, it is. Our local PBS station showed some episodes of sitcoms and game shows a couple years ago on New Years morning, from midnight to 6 a.m. and that was one of them. |
