View Full Version : The Last Season
Stigmata 04-30-2000, 02:14 PM A&E is currently airing the last season, and I had completely forgotten how sappy Dan became as a result of running the Phil Foundation. I didn't find that Dan funny at all, just annoying and vexatious. It's a good thing facet of Dan didn't last very long, because the sinical, offensive, sex crazed Dan is one of the many aspects that made Night Court one of the best sitcoms of the 80s.
And who's brilliant idea was it to have Gilbert Godfried (I don't care if I spelled his name wrong, he's not worth looking up the correct spelling) on this show? He has to be the most annoying specimen on this planet. Does anyone find this guy's act remotely humorous? Even if it was for just a handful of episodes, I felt like slamming my remote into the tv set, after having to listen to this twit talk for half an hour.

Renee McDonald 05-01-2000, 08:12 PM I HATE HIM! The only time I even snickered was the line in Bulls bachelor party episode, when he made the comment about the 'fiery holocaust' and 'cows died'....that I laughed at. He is the reason I won't watch Aladdin.......
And I was so happy when that chick slapped Dan and he remembered what he was like before. The Phil Founation stuff sucked.
Its sad to see a show that was so good go downhill. It especially shows since A&E is airing 2 eps a day so they are so close to each other that the quality dropping is really obvious. Its sad. Thats why I think Reinhold Weege needs to make a proper ending to the show and do a reunion movie.
CHRISTINE 07-17-2000, 09:26 PM Gilbert Godfree was quite anoying in that last season. I dont know about you guys but i was really disapointed all threw that last season. Those writers totally messed the show up. I saw an interview, a long time ago with someone that was on the show, they said they thought the show was going to be picked up for another season, and then when they went in to tape the season finally that the producers said it was the last episode. It was like a last minute thing. The cast said that they would have never ended the show like that and they would have gone for a better story plot. So that really stinks i wonder what would have happend if they had a little bit more time to write another story plot. Although i doubt they would make a reunion show, it would be really cool to see one. I would love to see what happend to all those characters.
silentbri 07-19-2000, 03:10 PM Yeah, Night Court's last season will go down in history with such notable final seasons as "Laverne and Shirley" and "The Brady Bunch" as having had the WORST last season ever. I'd like to see them do a "It was all a dream" episode, and the entire final season be wiped from the memories of everyone forever!

Freakzilla 07-23-2000, 06:29 PM The ending with Bull being abducted by aliens was really bad.

Night Court Fan 03-24-2001, 02:11 PM I am glad that Dan didn't become a priest but I wish that Harry and Christine had gotten married! They were meant to be together!
SafeatHome 07-25-2001, 02:19 PM In my opinion, the writing for the 8th and 9th seasons pretty much sucked! Am I right in saying all the good writing left when people like Weege, Boomer, Strawther and Murphy et al left after the 7th season? You can see a definite change between the 7th and 8th seasons. Dont get me wrong, I love Night Court and it is my all-time favorite show, but the "Dan/Phil Foundation" plotline sucked. I agree that someone other than Gilbert Gottfreid could've been cast and that Bull and the Alien thing was less than sub-par. I miss this show a lot. Sure, the writing in the 8th and 9th seasons wasn't great; but this is still Night Court. I still love the show
Jojohoho 07-27-2001, 01:21 AM I would also add Murphy Brown to the list of shows that stayed around too long.
Night Court was already on the decline well before the final season. One of the signature marks of the classic Night Court years was the interplay between the naive "goody two shoes" Christine and the sleazy, sex-obsessed Dan Fielding. It seemed that over the final seasons, there was a gradual process of Dan becoming more sensitive/sympathetic and Christine becoming less "pure"...and the loss of that tension was one of the reasons the show was not as good toward the end.
plappy 08-25-2001, 10:57 PM Family Matters, Step by Step, Newhart, and Maude lasted way too long.
Mcfly 08-27-2001, 01:30 AM That final season was pretty tough to sit through. I remember watching it during its initial run, having waited all summer to see what had happened to Dan. But it only took five minutes for me to go "Man, has the writing REALLY fallen off." I had even enjoyed the Phil Foundation stuff cuz it was interesting to see Dan as a different person. But it was so weird to see a show so consistently good for 7 years all of sudden have you sitting there stonefaced. And I totally agree about the Bull thing. What about his wife?? Was he just going to leave for some planet forever to be "the guy who reaches the stuff on our top shelves"? A dumb science fiction moment that was totally unreal. NC had a lot of outrageous and unreal things over the years, but that was just ridiculous. Though the last few years (except the final one) were good, they lacked the punch of the 85-87 seasons. They were the first show to really push the raunch envelope with their tastelessness. But it seemed to go away and the antics became just zany. But still one of my fave shows ever.
Night Court Fan 09-01-2001, 12:07 PM I thought it was good when Dan became a saint, because it showed what a great actor John Larroquette truly is! I loved the ep when he turned back into his old self, because one second he was a saint and the next.... he returned to normal! I also loved the Christmas episode "Santa On The Lamb" because this was after Dan returned and he was very nice in this one, proving once and for all, while some people think he's Darth Vader, he's actually Anakin Skywalker! And the episode "Shave And A Haircut" was great because Mel Torme was great! The 9th season may not have been the best season of Night Court, but it still was a season of Night Court, and to me that's enough! A bad season of Night Court is better to me than a great season of any other show! Night Court is the best! I wish there was a 10th season! I wish there was at least 200 episodes! Too much of Night Court is NEVER EVER ENOUGH!
Night Court Fan 09-16-2001, 02:42 PM I think Gilbert Gottfried is so much funnier as a duck than a human!
DainGuy 07-18-2002, 10:41 AM Boy Meets World lasted one season too long.
Bull is one of my all-time favorite sit-com characters.
