View Full Version : Carol's girlfriend Susan...annoying??
Dr. Thong 08-25-2005, 07:45 PM I've been watching the early Friends episodes again and one thing that gets reinforced is that I find Carol's girlfriend Susan a bit annoying. She's very competitive and possessive about Carol towards Ross, like she's marking her territory.
I also find it annoying that Carol insists that Susan will be Ben's other "mommy." At best, she'd be a stepmother. Now, Ross is a bit childish towards her, but I cut the guy some slack because he'd been dumped and was trying to get over his impending divorce while dealing with having a son on the way.
Ross proved to be a stand-up guy when he saved Carol and Susan's wedding, so he ultimately took the high road and came to terms with the end of his relationship to Carol.
Rachel3118 08-25-2005, 11:24 PM I always found her a bit annoying just because she seemed like a wierd different person. Now that you mention it she did seem a little possesive towards Carol.
snl75 08-26-2005, 01:57 AM i dont like susan at all for the same reasons as everybody here listed. and i never liked the way she acted towards ross i mean she neven had a kind word for him only putdowns and sarcasm

I always took her attitude as being "She's mine, now!" She was acting like Ben was her kid when Carol was pregnant.
Rachel3118 08-26-2005, 07:58 PM A lot of kids refer to their step-parents as "Mom" or "Dad", especially if they raise them from a very young age.
Yah, It would be realistic for them to call their step parent mom or dad. On the show it never bothered me that she acted like a mom to Ben.
SpunkiiMonkii7078 08-27-2005, 08:12 PM I didn't mind that Susan was like a mom to Ben.
What did annoy me though, was how Susan kind of shoved Ross around. She thought that Carol and Ben were both now hers, and she kind of wanted to keep Ross out of things. That's just my view of things, but that did get to me.

I never liked the Carol/Susan storylines. They were both very mean to Ross.
After all, Carol was the one who broke up Ross's marriage, the least she could have done was be civil to the guy.

Especially when she wanted to give Ben Susan's last name as one his middle or surnames. Now, Carol and Ross were still married when Ben was conceived and his last name should have been Gellar. If Carol wanted her last name to be in there, that was fine, but Susan's did not belong at all.
I don't know if Ben ever did get Gellar as his last name. Then again, Ben became irrelevant when Emma was born - notice how you never saw or heard about him again?? At least not anything I recall.

Yeah, Ben (as well as Carol and Susan) just about disappeared during the later seasons.

Well, Carol and Susan were not essential to the show, but Ross did have a son. I wonder if he's hanging out with Chuck Cunningham now... :D
tiff7 08-28-2005, 01:13 PM The boy (played by twins, as on many tv shows, i.e. Step By Step, Full House, Bewitched, among others) is on Disney Channel's "Suite Life of Zack & Cody" (he's a little young 2 be w/Chuck from "Happy Days" :)) I also agree w/y'all on Susan being mean 2 Ross, especially when Carol had Ben.

Rachel3118 08-28-2005, 01:27 PM Wow, everyone seems to think she was really bad. I didn't even think about it to this thread. It was ridiculous that she wanted Ben to have her name though. Ben did disappear in the later season but it can be explained by the fact that he had his two moms do most of the caring for him.
Johnny S 08-28-2005, 01:55 PM I don't mind Susan that much, but sometimes she is a real bitch towards Ross. Carol on the other hand is one of my favourite characters on the show.
slackermonkey 08-30-2005, 04:19 PM Susan disappeared after season 6, Carol after season 7. Ben hung around until the middle of season 8, then he was reduced only to being mentioned.
But yes, Susan was an unlikable character, especially in the early seasons. She had a right to be involved in Ben's birth to a certain extent, but definitely didn't deserve to have her surname in Ben's name, or to treat Ross with so much smugness and contempt.
Care Bear 09-02-2005, 04:04 PM I agree with a lot of what has been said here. Ben definitely shouldn't have had Susan's last name as 1 of his. I do wish though that they had done an episode with Ben and Emma together. It would've been cute seeing him be a big brother.

Exactly!!! She always seemed to have the attitude that Ross was interfering - excuse me, but he WAS married to Carol and WAS the father of Ben and Susan WAS "the other woman". Ross was more than civil with her imo and I felt so badly for him when she'd tried to keep him from Carol and out of the picture during his birth.
On another note, I would have liked to have seen at least Ben, and even Carol and Susan on one of the last shows of the series - maybe even to sort of "wrap things up" and have Susan bury the hatchet (hopefully not in his back) and maybe a storyline where they finally agreed that they wanted "Geller" in Ben's surname (even though it would have read like War and Peace). ;)

I forgot about that!
That Bitch!
;)
Rachel3118 09-02-2005, 10:52 PM It would have been cute to see a story line with Ben and Emma. The plot may not of had a lot of substance though.
I also think it would have been good if they had tied Carol, Ben, and Susan to one of the episodes towards the end of the series.

Exactly the way I look at it. Yes Ross did act a bit childish at times to her but I think that was a bit understandable, unlike the way she acted towards him.:rolleyes2
mal129 07-21-2011, 11:05 AM An ex-girlfriends bff was exactly like Carol. I found her very obnoxious. But they were so close so I had to deal with it. They weren't lovers though... were they? Hmmmm I was dumped.....
Dr. Thong 10-17-2014, 05:05 PM This is one of the problems when the writers are trying to be groundbreaking or cool instead of funny - the characters just come off as smug stereotypes instead of vulnerable (and potentially funny) people.
The best example I ever saw of this on the show was when Susan travelled to London, Emily was showing her around there, and Ross was worried that it would be Susan and Carol all over again. Of course Carol had to be so rational and tell him he was being stupid, but how much funnier if it had turned out that the exact same thing was going through her mind, so that she and Ross could be partners in paranoia and Carol could actually be, you know, funny. But the chance just sailed right by, because the writers just couldn't even think of letting Carol be out-of-control.
Actually, you should watch the episode again. Ross manages to convince Carol she should be paranoid and Carol ends up worrying just like Ross.
