View Full Version : Question on downloading music?
Janice 08-24-2005, 07:08 PM I haven't downloaded music in years, so I'm totally out of the loop. Is it still free? Is it legal? Is there a site that doesn't have all sorts of spyjunk and viruses? I ruined my last computer by infecting it with so much crap.
What's the latest?
Don't tell me you bought an iPod!
;)
Hollow 08-24-2005, 07:15 PM i'm still a kazaa whore, whether or not it's legal i don't care, i can't stop using it.
just a few minutes before this thread was posted i'd just gotten done typing a list of all the songs i have on my mp3 player knowing that it would be useful someday. :grr:

I downloaded Kazaa this afternoon, but I got so many scary warnings from Microsoft that I uninstalled it. I then ran all the scans, and I had a lot of junk there.
Penny Lane 08-24-2005, 07:36 PM I still download now and then. (KaZaa) But the stuff that I download are mostly oldies from the 60's and 70's. Anything more recent require a fee. I have had no trouble yet! :D
IMakeBurgers 08-24-2005, 07:37 PM I use LimeWire. It works well on my computer...
Chelsea 08-24-2005, 08:24 PM KaZaA?! *spittake*. Wow, I'd actually begun to assume people had stopped using that piece of...crap...excuse for software.
LimeWire's my pick, at least for downloading individual audio files.
I rarely download music anymore, for four reasons:
1.) My music collection is big enough, and ever-growing.
2.) I currently have my entire CD library ripped onto my computer as waves, which are exact CD quality. MP3s are not.
3.) You can't rely on the quality of MP3s. Seriously, it baffles me how bad some people are at the simple act of ripping CDs. I've downloaded tons of songs in my day that sound like crap. I've also seen mislabelled music. I once downloaded "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel back in the Napster days, and it was labeled as by The Beatles.
4.) It's too risky. I don't want my computer to get virused all to hell.
James"Thunder"Early 08-24-2005, 08:25 PM Do Limewire, it works good.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 08-24-2005, 08:26 PM Kazaa is bad. Limewire is good. Both are illegal.
Mijada 08-24-2005, 08:52 PM I haven't downloaded music in years, so I'm totally out of the loop. Is it still free? Is it legal? Is there a site that doesn't have all sorts of spyjunk and viruses? I ruined my last computer by infecting it with so much crap.

I agree with you, I'm scared to use that stuff too. I don't think any of those sites are 100% safe. You will always be taking a chance with them.
Ireneparalegal 08-24-2005, 08:55 PM ARES...I never ever get bombarded with any kind of ads or adware. It is so simple and easy to use. I use to use Kazaa...too much ads, etc. Lavasoft is a good piece of adware/junkware/spyware, etc. remover. It catches everything and I use it at least once everyday and get rid of all the junk it has held back from even trying to get into my computer.
Rebel Queen 1980 08-24-2005, 09:09 PM I don't know if there are many sites where you can download free music
anymore Janice,I don't do it because of the computer viruses. I think
Kazaa does alot of viruses and spyware because my mom's friend told
her at work that her nephews downloaded songs from that site on her
computer last year and it got a bunch of viruses and broke down.
theshark8777 08-24-2005, 09:14 PM edonkey2000 for illegal.
iTunes for legal.
Also if kazaa litw k++ still existis somewhere, its a hack that is spyware free. If you want to use kazaa id recommend finding that version.
Kay Scarpetta 08-24-2005, 09:43 PM I use Limewire. As long as you use Microsoft Anti-Spyware (free, microsoft.com) you should be okay.
And the RIAA can kiss my ass, as far as legality. I'm not paying iTunes a buck per song. My iPod holds anywere from 5,000-6,000 songs.
musicradio77 08-24-2005, 09:52 PM I use BearShare a lot. I don't Kazaa Lite, becuse it has a bunch of viruses that it would affect my computer from being crash. I missed Kazaa. As of right now, BearShare is where I have it here. I usually tried Imesh, it flopped because of the pop-up ads that would affect my computer virus.
MaydayMalonesGirl 08-24-2005, 09:54 PM I use Morpheus. It does the trick, and it's free. I have no clue if it's legal if that's a concern.

If you don't pay for downloading songs, then it's not legal.

That's what I figured.
TripperFan 08-25-2005, 12:42 AM If you want to go the legal route, go with BearShare. I think there's a nominal fee, but its really good. You can find anything on it! And no ads, pops, spam or anything else ;)

Yeah, there's also a pretty decent Russian website that charges 2 cents a MB to download (pretty good price, if you think about it). And it also has a pretty vast array of music/artist choices. Their website is:

I used to get that on Napster all the time, back when it was free. It was so annoying.
dawsongirl 08-25-2005, 03:42 PM edonkey2000 for illegal.
eMule is good for getting TV shows off of. I've found several rare shows that I couldn't get on TV or DVD. Also never gotten a bad music file off there. Though I don't so that a lot because I have just about every song I want on CD.
Viviana 08-25-2005, 03:47 PM I use Limewire also. Then all the songs from Limewire, I transfer them to iTunes and then to my iPod. I do this on my laptop cuz on the other one it doesn't work cuz it's millenium.
InspectorExstead 08-25-2005, 08:54 PM LimeWire's probably the best way to go for free downloads. If you want to view music videos for free, then check out www.launch.yahoo.com, but I believe you need a yahoo name for that. You should also check out download.com. My computer is always getting infected with spyware and I recently (Monday) got it completely fixed, but now it's infected again. To keep the same thing from happening to my laptop, I went to download.com and downloaded a bunch of programs that get rid of spyware. It's safe and really good. Check out Microsoft.com as well- they have a spyware program on there for you to download for free. As long as you have protection, your mind will hopefully be a little more at ease when downloading. Hope that helps. :)

How do you transfer them to itunes?
bad_boy 08-25-2005, 08:56 PM Bearshare
theshark8777 08-25-2005, 09:03 PM How do you transfer them to itunes?
All you have to do is play it in iTunes or put it in the library. Then it will transfer to your iPod.
Janice 08-25-2005, 09:04 PM Thanks for the advice everyone. I went with Limeware, and I love it. I didn't get a single virus or anything of the like, no pop ups. It's fast. I was downloading seven songs at once. So, when will I get arrested?
I downloaded the song Lullaby by The Cure. I lost my cd a while back and really missed that song.
Viviana 08-25-2005, 09:42 PM How do you transfer them to itunes?
I saved them from Limewire to iTunes music and then I clicked "add file to library" and all the songs that I saved on Limewire went on the iTunes library.
cralappyhappy4 08-25-2005, 10:30 PM i have winmx its free and works good
EmoJoe 08-25-2005, 11:15 PM I have WinMx or whatever. Honestly I hate it because its slow as heck and half the time doesnt even work. Yeah its illegal but who cares, I rarely download off of it anyway. I'd rather just buy the CD. I only use WinMx if I want to download one song from a certain album. I want an IPod but I dont think thats gonna happen.
I think its dumb that downloading music is illegal, yet people will insert spyware, virisus and crap into your computer and nothing happens to them.
Dutabi84 08-25-2005, 11:20 PM Limewire for individual songs, and mIRC for albums.
RustyShackleford 08-25-2005, 11:41 PM I use BearShare, but I also download music not avaliable in the U.S so I don't think I can get busted
So, when will I get arrested?
Just watch out for these guys (http://www.campchaos.com/show.php?iID=230).

Kay Scarpetta 08-26-2005, 01:07 PM So, when will I get arrested?
Well, we can share a cell and wallpaper it with Red Sox posters. I've got over 1,500 files on my computer.
Kay Scarpetta 08-26-2005, 01:09 PM Limewire for individual songs, and mIRC for albums.
mIRC as in the chat client? My boyfriend spends his life on mIRC.

Dutabi84 08-27-2005, 12:59 AM mIRC as in the chat client? My boyfriend spends his life on mIRC.
Yes. You can download a lot of different things; music, programs, etc. through the IRC network.
InspectorExstead 08-27-2005, 01:45 AM I saved them from Limewire to iTunes music and then I clicked "add file to library" and all the songs that I saved on Limewire went on the iTunes library.
What if I wanted to burn them on a CD? I'd have to follow the same procedure?
