Hola!

Why were many of the B&W episodes concerning alcohol. Otis, moonshiners, the two old women, Raif Hollister, the Medicine Man and many others. Why so many boozing episodes? Was moonshining and drinking part of the mountain southern gothic? Were the writers alcoholics?

What ELSE is there to do in a town like Mayberry?

Southern moonshinin', bustin' up stills in "dry" counties, and the town drunk are good opportunities for comedy. But, in comparison to the total number of episodes, it wasn't that many.

Yep, when you think about Mayberry was one dangerous town between "lefty" Opie and Otis the town drunk!
