Co-workers asking to borrow money and only been knowing me since July 5th which is not even two months yet. I can;t believe someone would have the ordasity to open up their mouth and ask me to borrow $20 and we just met in July. UNBELIEVABLE. So i had to lie because once you start, they will always ask. They know not to ask me anymore after this statement

"I bring $10.00 to work with me everyday, $5.00 for breakfast, and $5.00 for lunch"

So that statments prevents any more-"hey Solomon can i borrow $10 until Friday"

Anyone go through this on there job?

I don't blame you a bit!! What a bunch of moochers!!

I don't recall people doing it that soon to me, but I'd have a box of kleenex on my desk that would magically get emptied by the end of the week. Also had the president constantly bumming smokes off of me. He even admitted he probably owed me a carton - meanwhile, the guy was probably earning 10 times what I was.

I eventually did the same as you - hid the Kleenex and told the pres I just had enough cigarettes to "do me". If you don't, they'll just keep it up and it gets worse.

Indirectly he was - I actually worked for 4 V.P.s and the President. He wouldn't have fired me, but it did make life easier by providing them for him since he'd sometimes invite me into his office for a smoke (when it was a non-smoking building). He sneak them in the washroom!!
Trouble was that sometimes when other execs visited him who smoked, he'd hand out mine!! There IS a limit!

I never had that problem with money (on the rare occasion I got asked for $, I would always tell people, "Sorry, I only bought enough to buy lunch for myself."), but I had a HUGE problem with people wanting a stick of gum from me. This happened *ALL THE FREAKING TIME* when I was in middle/high school, because the other kids knew I was always stocked with gum, and they loved spearmint the most (the flavor I always had with me). I was okay with it some of the time but if 5 people asked me at once, I flat-out refused them the gum. Get yer own pack -- they're only $1 or less everywhere! :schmack: I did NOT appreciate having to constantly buy a new pack of gum every week because of that. I like my pack of gum to last me two or even three weeks but when I was in school, I'd be cleared out in a week. *sigh*

Luckily, that doesn't happen anymore. I just give people an evil glare if they do.

They can atleast wait for me to get pass my 90 day probationary period before asking to borrow money. It may have something to do with the fact that i'm one of the only employees who is single with no kids. The majority of people have cars, familes, and mortagages and that's probably why they always need money

I understand what you mean. When I first started working people would ask to borrow money all the time. I just kept saying no and they got the message and now they leave me alone. I never would let those people make me feel guilty either just because they had kids and I didn't. As far as I was concerened, they made the choice to have kids at a young age and if they can't afford em they shouldn't have had em. It used to really tick me off how these people always had money for cigarettes and beer on the weekends but when it came to important stuff like food or gas for the car they were always broke.
There've been times when I needed a few bucks here and there too but I would never ask a coworker. I either went without or just asked a very close friend or family member but only if it was for something very important. Either way I was always embarrassed to borrow money from anyone. It amazes me sometimes at the lack of pride some people have.

You know what else sucks about being the single person in an office - you're the one who usually gets stuck working late. The others have their excuses - need to pick the kids up from daycare.....need to drop them off at soccer practice...blah blah blah - they also get first choice of vacation time because they have to take them when the kids are off. You really get screwed when you're single or even married without children. And they give you a blank stare if you say you have dogs to get home to or something. It's not fair!

I give money to my co workers frequently. Only the ones I like though. The ones I know will be there to give me money if I forget my wallet or something, and usually not more than $5. I know they will give it back in a day or two.

Another thing that often happens at my work is people who don't have cars/licences or have their car tied up in the shop will have someone drop them off in the morning but have made no arrangements as to how they are going to get home and at the last minute will ask a co-worker to drive out of their way to take them home. I can understand if you drive your own car to work and when you get ready to go home it doesn't start or you have a flat or whatever. In those situations I am more than happy to help someone out. I just can't stand when people ask you at the last minute to cancel whatever plans you may have had after work to drive them home when they've had the previous evening and all day to make other arrangements.

Oh - I thought you had been loaning them money and that's why they kept hitting you up for more. Well - you still must look like a kind guy and the type of person they could approach. You need to sport a mohawk or something - maybe full length black leather coat - give that Samuel L. Jackson tough guy image!!

That, or pass them a couple of counterfit bills (use the colour photocopier) - once they get nailed for trying to pass them, that ought to cut down on the mooching! ;)

It can happen. I once worked at a place where they were going to fire a guy, and luckily somehow the word got out ahead. One of the girls comes running in to his boss and told him that the guy owed her $250. When the boss fired him - he mentioned it and the guy admitted he owed it. The boss was holding his final paycheque and so there were no excuses, drove the guy across the road to a bank and made him take the $250 right off the top and give him the cash before he was allowed to get his personal things and leave.

I wasn't so lucky a month later when they canned one of the girls I had loaned a couple of books to - never did get those back.

I loaned a book to a co worker once and she quit a few days after I loaned it to her. it was a nice hard cover book too. I don't like loaning books to anyone anymore. A friend of mine wanted me to loan one of my Harry Potter books to her daughter but when I saw the way her kid keeps up her room and takes care of her toys I didn't loan her the book. It would have just ended up getting lost or trampled on in all that mess.

Same here - both my husband and I have stopped loaning books and DVDs (unless they're VERY close friends) because of the same reasons.

Some of my best friends forget their lunch money sometimes, and I will only give it to them if I have enough on me or if I know that they'd pay me back. My manager always asks me for cigarettes. Today, she asked me what kind I smoked, and I told her that I smoked Marlboro Menthol and that she could have one if she needed one. I was busy so I just told her to grab it out of my apron that I was wearing(I was making sandwiches at Wendy's..I'm 16, give me a break). Later on that day, I was doing dishes so I could get more hours and she came up to me, didnt say anything, and stuck her hand in my apron and grabbed a cigarette. I didnt mind because I knew that she would give me one if I had one. Also, she took my lighter the other day. When I asked my brother if I could use his, he said, "No". I had to wait until I got home to smoke. It's fine, I'll take hers one of these days...

No kidding! I learned that lesson recently, as well. Two co-workers asked me to buy them lunch. They both said they'd pay me back.

Now, I'm the kind of guy who would not ask them to pay me back. If they need lunch, are hungry and we need to get back out an work in a few minutes, then certainly I would treat them! They need the food. I can get it for them. Good deal!

But they specifically told me "Will you buy me lunch, I'll pay you back after we get paid". No brainer! Sure! You look honest.

   Yup! I either have "Sucker" written on my forehead, or a sign saying "idiot" on my back. Or something far worse. Would be nice if people let me in on the huge joke!

One guy has since been fired. I won't get money from him anytime ever. As for the other, he claims he will pay me eventually. That wasn't the deal. I won't hold my breath!

I think I'll charge interest...

I don't mind loaning out money on several conditions:

1) If I know the co-worker well enough or are close to them,

2) If I didn't know the co-worker well, it would be all right to loan them a small amount of money.
