Station Owner Struck, Killed Trying To Stop $52 Gas Theft
Search Continues For Driver In Robbery-Homicide

POSTED: 2:27 pm CDT August 21, 2005

FORT PAYNE, Ala. -- A Fort Payne gas station owner was struck and killed when he attempted to stop a driver from leaving his fuel pump without paying for $52 in gasoline.

Fort Payne Police Chief David Walker said Husain Caddi, 54, died Friday from his injuries a short time after being taken to Baptist Medical Center-DeKalb in Fort Payne. Police were called about 3:20 p.m.

A search for the driver continued Sunday.

Witnesses told police that Caddi, owner of the Fort Payne Texaco, "grabbed onto the vehicle" when its driver began to drive off without paying.

The driver dragged Caddi across the parking lot and onto U.S. Highway 11. Caddi fell from the vehicle and was run over by the vehicle's rear wheel.

Chief Walker said other vehicles were leaving the station's lot and there was a great deal of traffic on the roadway near the station.

Police are looking for a gold, brown or tan, late-model sport utility vehicle that resembles a Jeep Liberty or Ford Explorer. The driver could be in his 20s or 30s.

Walker said the case is being investigated as a robbery-homicide.

Gas prices recently have surged to a nationwide average of $2.55 a gallon.

Stole the words right out of my mouth! It also isn't worth nearly killing someone to get away with a tank of free gas.

Hell, don't they all have cameras that take pictures of the pumps? Could have watched that for the plate number, called the cops, and nailed the loser.

And if you can't afford the gas for your damn SUV, then buy a car, morons.

This is why one (maybe more) of the chain gas stations around here have started to require pre-payment.

Why was the guy trying to stop a gas theft? That was not a smart decision, especially since is not the police. He was either supposed to notify police or just gone on about his business.

Pay at the Pump is the greatest invention ever. I hate going inside to pay. Especially if you have to pre pay and you are filling up, you dont know how much it is going to cost. Alot of places here now are making you pre-pay.

Also I think if someone was trying to steal something of mine, I would try to stop him too. But Im sure he was on camera somewhere, they could have just taken his plates. Oh well, I hope that $52 was worth vehicular homicide.

:yeahthat I usually just pay with my gas card anyway. But going inside was never my idea of fun. And I've never in my life known how much I was going to use.

QuikTrip does have a pump start card though that will start the pump if you want to pay with cash. And the card knows all your info, so if you drive off, they know who you are.
