Whod di you think that Julia Duffy played better? I thought that Julia played Allison a tiny bit better, probably because her character wore out very quickly on Newhart, and Stephanie just got a bit annoying by the 1986-1987 season.

I've never watched Designing Women but I really thought the Stephanie character was great. And plus she was only on Designing Women one season I think. Right? I'm too tired to check that right now but I'll say Stephanie. Also, she was nominated for Supporting actress for Newhart in 1984,85,86,87,88,89 and 90! Sure she never won but that's quite an accomplishment.

Yes, she was only on one season of Desinging Women, which is my personal favorite season.

I think she played Stephanie better because if you think about it she has always played the "stuck-up" roles. Stephanie just happened to be the most stuck-up and the easiest for her to play (not that Julia is stuck-up). Allison just wanted attention from Julia, but never did anything to get it. Stephanie wanted attention and made sure she got it!

Personally, I think she did a better job on Newhart so I'll go with Stephanie. She was also one of my favorite characters. :)

Stephanie! Julia Duffy and Peter Scolari (Michael) were a great team.

Stephanie all the way - couldn't stand her on Designing Women. As a matter of fact, she was the main reason I just stopped watching the show.

She was a hoot on Newhart and especially when they had her and Michael get together - perfect for each other!

I liked her better as Stephanie too. Allison wasn't a likable character at all.

I have to go with Stephanie by a long shot.
Now I have to admit my bias right up front.
Newhart ... one of my favorite shows ever.
Designing Women ... On the other end of my TV show spectrum lol

I know Stephanie didn't have great depth to her character. But it was a role she did so well. To this day, when I think of a snobby blue-blood female, I think of Stephanie vanderkellen. (and to a lesser extent Kelly from Cheers).
I think her years on DW were after the shark jump :P

I read somewhere long ago that Julia Duffy was the first choice to play Diane Chambers on Cheers. That role, of course, was played to perfection by Shelley Long. Both characters would've been the best of friends - rich snobs doing menial labor.

That rings a bell with me too.
I actually never compared the two before, but your right, its almost one and the same role.

Julia Duffy just didn't gel on that show. But I can't really blame her - she was brought in as a replacement for Delta Burke and remember all the controversy that whole situation caused. I think she did the best she could in a bad situation.

Stephanie! She is one of the only replacement characters that actually turned out to be one of my favorite characters. At first when they brought her in after Leslie I wasn't sure if I still wanted to watch the show, but after a couple of episodes I started liking her more and more. DW on the other hand... The results were just the opposite.

Stephanie Vanderkellen by a longshot. She was great in the role. Julia and Peter Scolari were great together.

I never really watched Designing Women but I heard that Allison Sugerbaker wasn't a good character.

I liked Designing Women but thought the character of Stephanie was better than Allison Sugarbaker. Loved the actress.

I've never watched "Designing Women", so I don't have any opinions about that show. But I can say that I think Stephanie Vanderkellen was a great character, and that Julia Duffy did a great job on "Newhart" from start to finish.

Diane and Stephanie were both rich snobs. Actually I can't remember if Diane was rich or not. Either way I wouldn't consider the two characters one and the same because Diane was much smarter than Stephanie. Julia did end up guest starring on Cheers one time. Fred Dryer of Hunter fame was the original choice for the Sam role.

Stephanie or Allison? Stephanie by a long shot!
