Totally true, but incredibly obscure facts about our favorite castaways:

Bob Denver was a mailman and a high shcool teacher before becoming an actor.

Alan Hale had a restaurant in Los Angeles in the 70's. One night David Carradine (Caine from Kung Fu) was drunk/high and really rowdy and Alan had to invite him to leave while holding a baseball bat for protection.

Dawn Wells' great-great grandfather was a stagecoach driver during the 1849 gold rush.

Jim Backus was taught in grade school by Margaret Hamilton, who was later the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.

Natalie Schafer named one of her dogs "Lovey."

Russell Johnson received a Purple Heart while serving in World War II

Tina Louise volunteers as a reading teacher in the New York City School System.

How cool is THAT? Wow! Thank you for posting these! Poor Jim Backus after seeing "The Wizard of Oz"!

I've always wondered if the shrapnel from the plane being hit that Russell went down in during the War left any lasting effects. The impact broke both of his ankles! Ouch!

Hugs!

Well I guess they were obscure to everyone but a GilliganFanatic :)

I can believe that you knew most of these, but did you really know about the Alan Hale/David Carradine incident and about Dawn Wells' great-great grandfather??

If you did, I'm really impressed :)

I hate to admit this and sound like I know everything, but I did know that. I have read so much stuff about Gilligan and have all the books except Dawn Wells cookbook and the Gilligan book from 1966. I am not sure where all my useless facts come from but I remember reading about all those somewhere.

Bob Denver has a chapter about being a teacher in Gilligan Maynard and Me

Natalie Schafer mentioned her dog in a TV special (cant remember which one)

I read about Alan Hale and David Carradine in a celebrity story book

Tina Louise mentioned volunteering as a reading teacher on ET and the E! True Hollywood Story

I think I read about Dawn Wells great great grandfather at some website

Russell Johnson mention his Purple Hear in Here on Gilligan's Island (I think it was there I read about it)

And I forgot where I read that about Jim Backus It might have been online but I know I saw it before

It was from Rescue from Gilligan Island. In the movie,Lovey's dog name was Fifi.Natalie has her dog with her when she had been interviewed for the E.T's special. Many castaways's secrets were reveled in that special. It's very interesting:)

well thank you very much
I agree with Bonsai! gilligan fanatic, you are totally awesome! I love to read what interesting things you have to say and appreciate you being here for all of us who might be novices at this "GI" fansite thingie... which would be ME!

Please, everyone here... don't EVER feel as if what you have to ask or say may be considered "stupid questions" or "ill-informed" replies.

We are all here to learn more about one of our fave shows of all-time and I would hope that if I posted information that was not factual, that someone who knew better would correct me for my sake and that of others on this list.

Rock On! You guys are great!

Hugs!

He mentioned it in a book entitled Here on Gilligan's Isle by Steve Cox and Russel Johnson. As we speak, its in front of me! I bought it at a used books store in Wildwood, NJ while on Vacation called Hooked on Books.
