NEW YORK (AP) - A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.
"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.
Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.
"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.
He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).
His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."
"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."
Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners - which I loathed - and I always felt phony doing them."
He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador." "(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time - it certainly wasn't planned."
barwars 08-17-2005, 12:52 PM Wait, he didn't realize this months ago?!
Nighthawk76 08-17-2005, 01:22 PM For me this is really good news because I thought Brosnan was the worst of all the Bonds. I only like one of the four 007 movies he made (The World is Not Enough). Some people complain how bad George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton were, but for me at leat, they were both much better then Brosnan.
Mikado 08-17-2005, 02:01 PM wow...someone besides me (DAX) liked Tim Dalton? < My fave Bond...played him like a person, not a cliche ..... Good news though, now Mike Myers can finally play Bond the role he was born to do

I think Dalton did a really good job as Bond. The Living Daylights is my 4th favorite 007 movie.
Brian Damage 08-17-2005, 06:59 PM I grew up watching Roger Moore as Bond, so he is my favorite.
It's too bad. I liked Brosnan as Bond.
But, the franchise was getting a bit stale. I'm sure they'll bring in someone younger to give Bond a facelift.

What the franchise REALLY needs is better scripts: the car chase , near death trap, Bond romances lady # 363 thing has gotten really old

I'm sure the next Bond Film will look very much like Matt Damon's "Bourne" films.
Both of those movies were proof that you can still make a taught spy thriller flick wothout a ton of effects and supervillians and Denise Richards in short shorts playing a nuclear physicist.
barwars 08-17-2005, 07:12 PM Sean Connery is my favorite, then Brosnan. Moore was good too, but I dont think I've seen the other guys.
Anyways, I like that the Bond movies are all pretty similar. Bond isn't supposed to be an epic artform, it's about fun cheesy movies.

Roger Moore was the king of cheese with his interpretation of James Bond. Pierce and Dalton made Bond more of an action hero.

Well.............................. lets not TOTALLY dismiss the "Denise Richards in shorts" part ;)

He's grateful ($$$$$, exposure) but it never felt real? He doesn't mind the work, and when he doesn't have the part anymore he trashes it. What gives? What a moron. Sean Connery or Roger Moore. The only 007's in my book.
musicradio77 08-23-2005, 07:41 PM That's sad.:( Pierce Bronsnan was forth and final actor played 007. He did four films to his belt. "Goldeneye", "Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day". It's so sad to see Pierce go. There are other actors who played James Bond over the years, Sean Connery was the first actor to play 007, and then Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and finally Pierce Bronsnan. All four actors played as James Bond. As I pointed out that AMC is showing the complete Jame Bond movies featuring Sean Connery and Roger Moore. They'll still aired thoughout August. I saw the movie "Die Another Day" 2 years ago and it was great. I love the James Bond movies. I'm getting some blank DVD-R's to record all of my 007 movies someday it will be on.
Dean Winchester 08-23-2005, 08:31 PM I'm surprised they let Pierce go, at least give him one sendoff picture like Diamonds Are Forever with Connery or A View To A Kill with Moore. Pierce Brosnan brought a new legion of fans to the 007 franchise.
Kazza 08-23-2005, 08:44 PM He was my favorite Bond
