anybody recall this case?
i thought it was somewhat unusual.
the mans mother was killed while he was young and from that time on he was really interested in crime novels, and is now seeking the man who killed his mother.
i believe his mother worked at a diner.

I think I know who you are talking about. Was his mother brutally raped? And then he tried to find out everything he could about the murder when he got older?

Yes, I have this story and I believe his name is James Elroy. He is a well known crime novelist who was searching for his mother's killer.

Was I thinking of the right one?

Yes. He was a young child when she was murdered (and I believe raped). They showed some scenes of her and a man at a drive-in type restaurant and the waitress talked about how pretty she was. I also remember a photographer snapped a photo of James the day his mother was killed. As he started to investigate her murder he did view photos of the crime scene I remember which I can't imagine doing if it were my mother. Haven't heard of any arrests though unfortunately.

Here is a website about James Ellroy. He talks a bit about his mother and apparently one of his novels was about her murder.

James Ellroy is one of my fave writers, all genres included. I haven't read that one, but I sure will one day. I read many articlea about that case though...

Weird, I don't remember that segment on UM...

Unfortunately his mother's killer was never caught. The killer is most likely dead now.

The killer is most likely dead now.

Otherwise, he might be in a nursing home, with no memory of having committed the murder.

Just like the Zodiac Killer. He's one of the few lucky Serial killers to get away with it.
