The writers were obviously trying to make some kind of statement. I can't imagin FBI agents acting that way when a kid asked them a question like that.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU 100%. I am so glad you brought this up. I hated that scene with a passion. It seems the inference made is that the FBI has something to hide abt Mr. Evers death. Kinda like a conspiracy of some sort. That is what I got out of that scene. And with the audience reaction to that statement by Michael, it seems that is the message they got.

The fact of the matter is that the FBI and the CIA are believed to be indirectly involved in a lot of civil rights deaths. Their involvement is not limited to covering or denying a lot of information that they may have.

So it wasn't an inference that the show attempted to create. The show portrayed exactly what was and is believed by many.

True, in the 70's there were a lot of covering up going on, does Nixon ring a bell. ;) But it's still going on today so not a lot has changed I guess, just a smidgen.

My whole point was that two field agents wouldn't have acted the way they did when somebody like Michael made an inquiry about a murder. They may have given some "bureau reply" but not acted embarassed by the question. The man who eventually was arrested in the murder was a guy who lived in the same area as I do.

I got your point. I understood what you meant. I didn't like that reaction either by the agents. If they were embarrassed by the question, they are lousy FBI agents for reacting/responding the way they did. I'm not saying there is no conspiracy or cover-up, but the FBI wouldn't be THAT STUPID. Shoot, they give themselves away like that??? Only on a sitcom.

FBI agents or not, they were human beings. Why would they not be embarrassed? IMO they had every reason to be embarrassed. Everyone knew even then that Byron De la Beckwith killed Medgar Evers even though it took years for the unrepentant bastard, who actually said he would never apologize, to be brought to trial.

Micheal may have been a child but he was very confident and that confidence coming from even a child, let alone a black child, can cause a person to be embarrassed.

I have to watch the rerun again, but I find it hard to believe that the writers exaggerated the truth of the current times and actions of many FBI/CIA agents.
