Still to this day my all time favorite decade is the 80's. People like to trash the decade when it comes to music, but most of my favorite music came from the 80's. Some of my faves:

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen

Prince - Purple Rain

Will To Power - Baby, I Love Your Way

Warrant - Heaven

Bon Jovi - Wanted, Dead Or Alive

So many more...

I'd say early to mid 1980's were the best. You had the new wave scene plus a fantastic underground scene. You could go to all the clubs and see bands like Black Flag, Ramones, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Alien Sex Fiend, The Cramps, and so many others. There was a great varied music scene back then. What few clubs left today get those horrible so-called underground bands that are really nothing but watered down radio music to sell an image- example Good Charlotte. It was also fun going to the drive-ins and watching cheap sleazy horror movies. They were nothing like the so-called "Scream" movies everybody loves today. Everything seemed to be more gritty.

I really hated it when in the mid-late 80's everything turned into big sprayed hair spandex pop metal, and New Kids on the Block became the grandfather of Backstreet Boys type groups. Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and Paula Abdul were horrible! MTV stopped concentrating on music somewhat at the time and started to slowly bring on original programming. Slowly it seemed like anything fun was taken over by greedy corporate companies and stomped all the good things out. The late 80's were the start of mega- manufactured pop singers like Milli Vanilli for example. Even the movies started to suck. Sadly this continues today in the 2000's.

I'd still say the early to mid 80's were the best. Everybody seems to neglect the first part of the decade.

why tell us our fave music sucks tho? I despise most rap music but I don't post on rap threads telling fans that. This thread is "I Love the 80's", which a lot of us DO. Not "what is your least favorite band from the 1980's", where "the 80's sucked!!!" fits in a lot better.

The 80's is the alpha and omega for pop music IMO, there's never been a decade like it before and I doubt we'll ever have a decade that good ever again. Give me the 80's over the hip hop/American Idol/poseur rock 00's no matter what. Almost all of my favorite music acts had their heyday in the 1980's, or at least were viable then. It was the last decade a lot of the 60's and 70's legends were still able to score hit singles, and was also the decade where a lot of the beloved 90's icons had their humble beginnings.

Well the original poster asked "What not to love in the 80s" and personally, I dont see anything wrong with me simply stating that I don't like 80s music. I didn't say that it "sucks" because that would be treating my opinion as a fact, so I just said that I don't like it. It's a lot better than what some people do say about rap and hip hop and American Idol and other more recent stuff...and it's certainly better than what people say about disco...

not trying to argue with you because I respect your opinion, but I am kinda surprised you're not much of an 80's fan knowing the soap follower you are. The 80's was when the soap stars really crossed over into rock, Rick Springfield was one of the top rock stars in the early 1980's, and Jack Wagner also had a huge single. There were a few other songs that decade, like "Think Of Laura" by Christopher Cross and "Friends And Lovers" by Carl Anderson and Gloria Loring (the chick who sang the FOL theme) that became huge hits thanks to their exposure on soaps like General Hospital.

Well, I do like a few 80s songs, but believe me, Jack Wagner...and his singing...just...wow...I'm glad he did Melrose Place because that's probably the only redemption he got from me lol

It's all good, though.

There was a great deal about the 1980's that DID suck...but it was a far more memorable decade then either the 1990's or the decade that we are in now. True, 80's fashion was pretty lame at times, but have you checked out some of the awful fashions that are popular now.

Things I love about the 1980's:

Music:

AC/DC
Blondie
Def Leppard
Peter Gabriel
Guns N' Roses
Elton John
Rush
Bruce Springsteen
'til Tuesday
Van Halen
The Waitreeses

Movies:
After Hours
Blow Out
Body Double
The Breakfast Club
Fame
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Flashdance
For Your Eyes Only
Heathers
The Living Daylights
The Lost Boys
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Raging Bull
Scarface
Star Trek II, III, IV
The Untouchables
A View to a Kill
The Watcher in The Woods

and, of course, Jami :D
