I don't know if this has been discussed already, but whatever happened to the original Tommy? He was in the pilot episode and he was the same kid who played him in the movie version. Does anybody know why he vanished?

I always wondered that myself. I'll do a little checking on the imd and get back if I have any luck.

The original child actor who played Tommy was Alfred Lutter, III, but he was replaced by Philip Mckeon after the pilot episode. Alfred Lutter III now runs a computer software organization or something and has a civil engineering degree. Back in the 70s he was in the movie The Bad News Bears and a few others. I couldn't find out ANY info on why they replaced him with Mckeon, though.

Lutter was a nerdy-looking kid. Not surprising he ended up in the computer industry.

I remember the original Tommy. But I remember that in some of his lines, he didn't get laughs. I think it was probably because of him not working out.

Well, he was annoying in the movie. It made you wish Ellen Burstyn would've got behind the wheel of that station wagon and turned him into roadkill, but his character was supposed to have been misbehaved and annoying.

Alfred was BRILLIANT in the film! It wasn't a real comedy after all, much more of a drama. I also had no idea he was in the pilot. I'd love to know why he didn't continue on.

No, but I think he is with the original Chuck from Happy Days and the original D.J. from Roseanne.
seriously, i do remember the original...they made a great move getting rid of him and sticking with the second one.

They probably room with Coco from Golden Girls at The House of Obscurity.

The TV show definitely had a different feel than the movie. Actor chemistry may have had something to do with it as someone mentioned, but I seriously doubt that was why he left. Personally I really liked Alfred Lutter in the movie. The movie was classic. (Martin Scorcese and Jodie Foster would work together again in Taxi Driver.)

He was probably pulled from the series to film "Bad News Bears In Breaking Training" which came out the year after the first one. The first film was released probably the summer before the show began in the fall, and since it was such a huge blockbuster hit, filming a sequel probably took priority to the show at the time.

He didn't do anything really after that film. He may have lost interest in acting or else just been an early blossomer in regards to acting.

The actor from the movie played Tommy in the pilot episode. What a slap in the face to have to be replace after being the one to originate it.(that is if he was fired.)

Who cares? It was great decision. Phillip McKeon was way better looking. He turned into a hot babe in the last few seasons.

Check out the exhaustive "Alice" website for information on the whereabouts of all the cast members, even the original Tommy.

From there, on the left, you can also click on "The Cast" to see the series cast members. :)

Unless you have a source, don't post your lies about Alfred.

I just watched Alfred Lutter in a season one episode of "Family". He played a character named Alvin Tanner of all things.

Lutter was rather nerdy looking. Phillip was teen magazine material. Lutter has done very well in the tech world.
