View Full Version : Golden Palace WAY better than Golden Girls
folbartman 08-08-2005, 12:07 PM I have found that The Golden Palace is way better than the original Golden Girls. You all must think I'm crazy, but this show is alot more funny and more interesting. See I'm a guy and probably that there are now men on this show I can relate to it better. So far Golden Palace is way funnier than the Golden Girls ever was, too bad that they only had one season of this show.
I don't seem to miss Dorothy in this series, it seems like Blanche, Rose, Sophia are more funnier with out dorothy.
I loved the part where sophia was taken out of the hotel by the police and being mistaken for the other lady, that was hillarious, lmao.
I can't wait to see a dvd release of the series someday. I don't purchase the girls set, but will definetly buy this set. love the golden palace.
Anyone else like it better than the golden girls?
Dean Winchester 08-08-2005, 12:28 PM I'm a guy and thought the male characters took away from the show. Golden Girls is a show about women, the male characters aren't fun as regulars, we had enough Miles and Stan as it was and those were never opening credit actors. I could relate to the girls more than the male characters, I never liked Chewy or the Don Cheadle character, and the kid? he was worst of all IMO.
It reminds me how Facts Of Life lost a little of it's luster when Andy and George Clooney came in. It took away screen time from the girls.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 08-08-2005, 07:21 PM I don't know I'm liking the show better than Golden Girls also.. I don't know if I'm just excited about seeing newer episodes or what. It seems like the jokes were funnier, probably because we've heard the same jokes on Golden Girls for such a long time in reruns.
ThomasE 08-08-2005, 11:29 PM I really like the series too. I seem to watch the show more. I loved tonite's episode with Kim Fields. The only issue I have is with the butcherd editing. It is like I watch this show and I am expecting certain dialogue but it is cut out. I'm like, "oh, that's different. They cut out a good part". I'm not complaining, though. Life is finally aring it. Thanks, Lifetime!
folbartman 08-09-2005, 02:19 AM That's funny Buffy, because I love the facts of life and I think the show was way better during the seasons 7, and 8 (when george and andy were on the set.)
As for golden palace, just saw another episode tonight. Great comedy, I love the part where sophia goes
"oh god not another one of those southern crap stories, with the mosquitos and the inbred, i get pregnant just listening to it."
then blanche goes "well would you rather hear one of roses' stories about tap dancing chickens or recipe's for kurflurgenburendurfengurgen."
Then later rose says well it's better than listening to those picture it stories of sophias, "for seven years i've tried to picture sicily, but never got it, so if you don't have a picture then just shut up."
That was great from that episode tonight of GP.
The storylines also seem not to revolve around women going through tough times in their golden years, the storylines now seem to revolve around the hotel and running it. Maybe that's why i like it.
drew8804 08-10-2005, 02:07 AM Im really glad Lifetime brought this series on, even if it was temporary. And although I had never seen it and many said it wasnt as good as the orginal I still wanted to see it just to see it. And to my surprise it is really good. Im really enjoying it. I dont know if its because its new story lines that I havent seen or what, but its funnier to me. Blanche, Rose and Sophia do seem funnier and are more able to stand out on their own without Dorothy. It was neat to see her return though, the audience reaction was long and she looked really good. Anywho, GP to me, does seem better and going back and watch GG doesnt seem the same now, lol. I really hope that GP does come out on DVD someday or that Lifetime will get good ratings and maybe decide to continue airing it, even only weekends would be good.

Roland is a little annoying, but I think Chuy is funny. I don't like Oliver either. In the episodes I remember watching with my mom when this show was first on, I don't remember him being in them.
George was okay in FOL, but Andy was awful. I really didn't like when Beverly adopted him. They could have used that episode instead for a way to write him out. That would have been better IMO.
robby76 08-10-2005, 11:15 AM I had a major dislike for Roland... even the actor himself... can't stand him! I used to watch Golden Palace when it aired originally and it was okay, still prefer just the 4 girls though.
TJAMES03 08-23-2005, 07:14 AM IMO, GP isn't even crud on GG's proverbial shoes. Especially the episodes with the kid.
P.S. I'm a guy too.
seventies_sitcoms 08-23-2005, 11:10 AM I think Sophia is a bit more nasty in this show. Maybe it is because she doesn't have Dorothy around to keep her from misbehaving.
Some of the insults on this show do seem more of a bite. Sophia really loves to insult Blanche even more it seems like. She is also nastier with Rose too.
I liked the Christmas episode where Rose is trying to train Roland to be Santa Claus. Rose tells him he has to stick his stomach out like a big bowl of jelly and Sophia says "Show him Blanche!!!!" Rose then tells Roland he has to grow way more facial hair if he is going to be Santa, and Blanche says "Show him Sophia!!!" Sophia's face turns all sour because she knows it is true that she old lady facial hair.

I didn't notice that Sophia was nastier. It seemed to me she got more senile. I loved her scenes with young Oliver. The contrast of old and young person. To me, it seemed as though Rose was a lot nastier and a bit psychotic with her remarks. She insulted Sophia and was cattier to Blanche with the insults. I loved Rose this season. One positive thing about Dorothy not being there IMO, it pushed the character Rose to be come stronger and less passive and to become more of a leader somewhat.

Even though she missed Dorothy, Rose was probably feeling more independent and at ease without her around. Notice how Rose was quickly pushed back into her place when Dorothy visited? Nobody even really said goodbye to her when she left. It is too bad this show didn't get the interest in it back then like it is now. It might've lasted another season.
I notice Sophia seemed to be "losing it", but I still think she was more nasty. I think it shows when she insults Rose.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 08-25-2005, 02:39 PM GOOD POINT about Dorothy! Rose probably felt more comfortable about being herself & being more independent without Dorothy. Because if you notice on the Golden Girls, Dorothy seemed like the one to take stabs at Rose the most about every little thing!! lol!Without nobody really getting on Rose, she probably felt more secure about things..
ThomasE 08-26-2005, 11:08 PM Well, I am glad Rose got the chance to hit Dorothy with that newspaper. I loved her independence. She out did Blanche in man comeptitions, fixing up Roland and nasty insults at times. I loved how she matured. Even whe Dorothy was on, Rose proved that she was a stronger characer. Even Dorothy asked, "When did Rose become the strong one?"
NO WAY is it better.
It's a decent show, but it's just not as good as the original.
Plus, Don Cheadle's character is just uninteresting and unfunny. Cheech was good, though.
ThomasE 09-01-2005, 06:57 PM I loved the Golden Palace and at times find it more entertaining that the Golden Girls. I do credit the extremely funny Golden Girls because it was to that show I now have Golden Palace. I like Don Cheadle as well. He was decent.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 09-01-2005, 08:26 PM The show started out real good but it got bad fast! These past two weeks, the episodes have been horrible. Then they've trashed characters like Miles & Stan. Having Miles cheat on Rose! . Then Stan being a fugitive or something & fleeing the country!
MikeLutton 09-02-2005, 02:26 AM yeah that 1 was ok good see stan back but didnt like way he left the show mean saying he died and having him fake his death n stuff i think it could of been better or2 parter bring Dourthy back somehow reunite them.that sad how they trashed them good charactors i really like stan Miles was ok
GeorgiaboyJeff! 09-02-2005, 01:03 PM I also thought it was stupid that Dorothy wasn't in that episode. I mean even though Stan&Dorothy are divorced.. I'm still sure she would have taken a flight to Miami for Stan's funeral. They still were in good terms with one another!
Dean Winchester 09-02-2005, 03:11 PM NO WAY is it better.
It's a decent show, but it's just not as good as the original.
very true. The Golden Girls is a CLASSIC, Golden Palace is okay.
It's like saying Three's A Crowd is better than Three's Company.
MikeLutton 09-02-2005, 05:21 PM i think it would of been funny if he showed up at his own Funeral in disguise or poped out of the casket scaring everyone half to death.lol And Dourthy shows up and hits him with this toupee or something like that.lol
Ohio8 09-12-2005, 12:08 PM "Golden Palce" was justifiably canceled after only one season, if you ask me. apart from the two-parter with Dorothy and two other episodes, it was... flat.

GrandGame1440 09-16-2005, 09:08 PM Did anyone happen to tape all the episodes Lifetime aired? I would love to somehow get my hands on some of these! :)
GeorgiaboyJeff! 09-18-2005, 06:35 PM Does anyone know when exactly when Golden Palace stops airing on lifetime??The only eps I taped were the Dorothy episodes.. I have no problem with thinking about the other eps in memory instead of taping them.
Christopher 09-18-2005, 06:42 PM Does anyone know when exactly when Golden Palace stops airing on lifetime??
I think the thread at the top of this board that says The Golden Palace Coming to Lifetime on August 1 through Sept. 16 (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=140218) might say when it stops airing. :)

I agree completely. And plus without Dorothy it just does not work, I guess I am bias because Dorothy was my favorite Golden Girl.

Oh yeah duh, what was I thinking about!!! LOL
seventies_sitcoms 09-20-2005, 12:33 PM Oh yeah duh, what was I thinking about!!! LOL
Don't worry. If I know Lifetime, they will probably be bringing this back in the summer.
BlairsQueenOfMyJeans 09-24-2005, 11:45 AM No way! Golden Girls is way better.
GoldenGirlsFan92 12-22-2005, 11:38 AM [QUOTE=folbartman]I have found that The Golden Palace is way better than the original Golden Girls. You all must think I'm crazy,
No you're NOT crazy!! I Love "The Golden Girls", but I really Like "The Golden Palace" too! I think Don Cheadle brings a little more flavor to the show!( I just wish they would have had more sences of Sophia!) I really like this show, and i HOPE that they will put "The Golden Palace" on DVD soooonnn!!!
I enjoyed the Golden Palace much better than The Golden Girls, too. Golden Palace didn't pick up an audience due to two reasons (if I remember correctly): 1. the show moved to Friday nights, and 2. The show moved to CBS and was no longer on NBC. These two factors are enough to hurt any sitcom- even one centered around the Golden Girls (especially a network change)
DLevine2 07-09-2006, 05:32 PM The Golden Girls is better than The Golden Palace. I like The Golden Palace but it would of been better if Dorothy was on the show and if they would have started a 2nd season.
1. The Golden Girls
2. The Golden Palace
Superbatboy 07-10-2006, 12:53 PM The Golden Palace is a great show, however I believe many people think it's better than the Golden Girls because it's fresher in a way. Many of us missed the original broadcast of the Golden Palace, and have seen Golden Girls episodes 1,000's of times. If you really examine both series, the Golden Girls had better writing and directing. At least in my opinion.
roz11 07-12-2006, 05:29 PM I never liked The Golden Palace. It started off okay but the second half was just terrible!
sigmapi30 06-24-2007, 08:30 PM It's been quite a while since the last season of GG was released and still no word on the release of The Golden Palace
This is getting disappointing. I know there are mixed feelings about The Golden Palace but I want it to complete my collection.
Email Buena Vista requesting the release at www.video.com.

OmegaWolf747 08-21-2007, 09:40 PM I didn't like GP anywhere nearly as much as I loved GG. It just wasn't the same without Bea Arthur. The synergy between the four actresses was what made GG such a success. The loss of any of them was the show's undoing and doomed GP before it started.
ThomasE 08-22-2007, 12:47 AM I loved the Golden Palace and sometimes I do like it better than I like The Golden Girls. It was fresh and different. All I know is that it had me laughing like crazy. When a show can do that, then I can give the show its props.
mstewart 10-22-2007, 07:53 PM I did not like Golden Palace. Without Bea Arthur the show sanked. But the two parter with her in it was funny.
Dean Winchester 10-24-2007, 04:08 PM I'm curious if the people who prefer GP didn't like Dorothy and/or are Cheech and Don Cheadle fans.
GP is okay, but for the most part, I think Golden Girls should've wrapped up when Dorothy left. I think maybe they could've made the GG series finale a little longer and wrapped up the storylines of Blanche, Rose and Sophia as well. Especially when you consider Blanche and Rose never really had closure
alienxg7 01-20-2008, 06:56 PM I remember watching the Golden Palace on Lifetime and TiVoing the episodes.
I thought it was decent. There were certainly some funny moments. Sophia was hilarious with her insults to Blanche. Rose was quite interesting... she did as others have mentioned gain independence that at times was very noticeable.
But unlike the GG, when I would watch the GP episodes again, they were not as interesting and I didn't have as much desire to watch the episodes again. It goes back to the writing I suppose.
I have always thought that perhaps the "girls" are all still running the hotel! I know many people have the opinion that perhaps Rose moved in with Kirsten and Sophia went to live to Dorothy or even Shady Pines (good rebuilt one ;) ). But I prefer (at the moment) thinking they're all working together still and being successful hotel managers.
A couple of more notes: Someone who watched the pilot with me had the opinion that the characters were written more generally, the result being more one-liners and predictability.
I do notice this especially in the pilot with Blanche at least.
I thought when Dorothy was leaving, it was so incredibly sad but filled with emotion... after everyone leaves and Dorothy's standing at the entrance preparing to leave it makes me feel so sad! The music is perfect here for the emotion and the girls going about their business, Rose pushing a cart and Blanche answering the phone added to the effect.
WOW! :)

Smartboy 01-20-2008, 08:58 PM This is just my opinion, but I would say that "The Golden Palace" was just about the "worst" attempt at a spin-off that ever was! It was right up there with "Three's a Crowd"! I would say that the episode that was most forced and artificial was the one in which we learn about the existance of Blanch's older brother who was mentially ********. This was a "terrible" attempt at mixing comedy with drama! Wow! One that I would say was a "very" close second was the one in which Roland was offended by the presence of a Confederate Flag. I mean, how typical and higher predictable can you get? However, throughout the whole sereis, there was one line that I thought was "very" well done and "still" has me laughing! This is when Roland mentioned being a Harverd graduate and asked his Mexican chef where he went to college. The chef said that he never attended college and instead went to a special program for inner-city minority males who could not afford higher education. Roland asked Chewy what program that was and he responded with "Vietman"! I thought that this was a "great" form of Generation X humor! I guess that the writers of just about any sereis can get lucky "once"!
goldenguy1923 02-14-2008, 08:19 PM gold palace...meh. more like golden chalice full of moldy bread!!! GG FOR LIFE!!!!!!!
GeorgiaboyJeff! 02-29-2008, 11:20 PM I sure hope this will come on Lifetime again!! I just bought DVR recorder and I've been recording like mad. I'm hoping I'll be able to get all the eps and possibly load them on youtube.
The Golden Girls is better than The Golden Palace. I like The Golden Palace but it would of been better if Dorothy was on the show and if they would have started a 2nd season.
1. The Golden Girls
2. The Golden Palace
Agreed. Bea really made a huge impact with the rest of the girls, and without her, the Golden Palace was only half of what the Golden Girls was.
