In just about every episode, in the background, there's this heavyset blond guy who has a non-speaking role (at least I don't remember him ever saying anything) as someone who works in the newsroom -- a gofer or whatever. Does anyone have any idea who the actor is?
TIA. . .

Um, no clue. But throughout the entire series, there was always people in the back with no lines. Just to make it look more like a newsroom.

Yeah, the same thing happens on Murphy Brown. Although those people sometimes actually have lines, lol. It just wouldn't look like a newsroom if there were only four or five people there. So they have to make it look crowded so it's at least somewhat realistic.

His name is Benjamin Chulay, son of the late John Chulay whose name you may have seen in Mary's closing credits

Wait they mention this in the Commentary in "A Slaughter Affair".. but I think they were referring to the thin guy that is in the back, right? Like diagonal from Mary's desk.. next to Lou's Office... know what I mean?
