View Full Version : Sitcoms vs. Dramas... troopoleon8897 08-08-2005, 12:29 AM Which type of television show is the better of the two? troopoleon8897 08-08-2005, 11:13 AM Im gonna have to say Sitcoms. I have always liked Dramas (Dallas, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, L.A. Law, Beverly Hills, 90210, Boston Public, Six Feet Under, Lost, and many more) I started out as a Sitcom fan and have always focused more on new sitcoms as for dramas i only watch if their is no sitcoms on (besides Lost) I am also focusing on Sitcom DVD's more than dramas. whuchutalkinbout 08-08-2005, 12:10 PM Sitcoms. Dramas are usually 30 mins longer that sitcoms..and I have a short attention span Dean Winchester 08-08-2005, 12:31 PM they're both good in their own ways, but I generally prefer sitcoms because you really have to "get into" dramas. Now when I'm watching shows on DVD, I find myself flying through dramas a LOT faster than comedies (I watched all 18 episodes of Roswell season 3 over the span of three nights) on DVD, while I feel like I can take my time more with comedies. barwars 08-08-2005, 12:51 PM I used to hate dramas, but I've grown to like them a lot. However, I am and always will be a sitcom fan. For every drama I like, there is 5 sitcoms I like just as much. Sitcoms hold up much better over time, and are better upon repeated viewings. Of all the dramas I like, very few are from more than 15 years ago. JT 08-09-2005, 07:33 PM It always alternates for me, but most of the time, I'm more of a drama fan. vashti1999 08-09-2005, 07:57 PM It's tough picking one format over the other, they both have elements where you're getting something from it, emotions wise. It's tough. I couldn't say one is better than the other or that I'd get more enjoyment from one over the other. I'd say sitcoms are more easily accessible but I probably appreciate both genres equally. dawsongirl 08-10-2005, 04:42 PM It always alternates for me, but most of the time, I'm more of a drama fan. Same here. The acting and plots are usually better. barwars 08-10-2005, 04:51 PM With traditional sitcoms you get more of play, while dramas are like a short feature film. Not that that has much to do with anything, but I was just thinking that I'd like to see a drama filmed in front of a live studio audience. Dean Winchester 08-10-2005, 05:05 PM With traditional sitcoms you get more of play, while dramas are like a short feature film. that's a very good analysis, most of the time, if you get hooked on a drama DVD, you're going to watch as many episodes as you can, it's like watching a long movie. With sitcoms, you can watch one a day or week and be fine Mr. Television 08-10-2005, 05:12 PM They're both good in their own way.Overall I'd say sitcoms but as for current shows Dramas are the best. Rachel3118 08-11-2005, 08:16 PM I would say drama. It's harder to stick with a sitcom because they don't have as much of a continuing plot. It's hard to decide though. Joeylova87 08-14-2005, 04:24 AM Sitcoms. Dramas aren't that funny. Superstar 08-14-2005, 04:34 AM Sitcoms. I love dramas too but I prefer shows that make me laugh. slackermonkey 08-15-2005, 12:36 AM Definitely sitcoms. To me, the point of television is escapism, and nothing works better to make you forget about whatever than humor. JT 08-15-2005, 08:20 PM In response to dawsongirl... Exactly. And it's not just soaps either, like some may think I'm thinking of. Dramas, on a whole, seem to have more knowledge of what the characters are and why they do what they do. And on dramas, things change. On sitcoms, things stay the same too long, it seems. For example, in a biography of Archie Bunker, one would say "Husband of Edith, father of Gloria" and that line could be present for AITF's entire run. However, if you did a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder (the TV version at least), one would put "Wife of Almanzo. Lives with him." That would be completely untrue for the first seven seasons of LHOTP. I just like to see things get shaken up once in and while, without it being called shark jumping. robby76 08-16-2005, 07:11 AM Sitcoms. Dramas are usually 30 mins longer that sitcoms..and I have a short attention span Ditto to that! I love sitcoms cos they're so digestable. I only watch my tv dvds as a quick fix to their being nothing on tv, so i want something quick and fun. Plus sitcoms always cheer you up and take me to my happy place... hah! slackermonkey 08-16-2005, 02:49 PM Originally Posted by JT Dramas, on a whole, seem to have more knowledge of what the characters are and why they do what they do. Which is why I love sitcoms with well-drawn characters that actually evolve throughout the series, like "Scrubs," "Cheers" or "Friends." barwars 08-16-2005, 02:52 PM Same here. The acting and plots are usually better. Not necessarily. It depends on the shows you're looking at, and the style of acting you're looking for. If you want a stage actor, look on a good sitcom. If you want a movie actor, look on a good drama. And while movies are accepted more by the general public, plays are regarded as the superior art-form. |
