For me, it was when I was threatened at work by a coworker, and I turned to my shift opener and said that I was going to hit my coworker. Neither one of us got in trouble though.

Parents smoked "home rollies" for years - no filters. Mother died of emphysema in '96, and my dad of a massive heart attack (at age 53) back in 1980. I was the same - completely hooked within a couple of years. I smoke lights too thinking the same thing - nope - they might be SLIGHTLY lower in tar or nicotine (usually not that much), but it was just found out a couple of years ago, that the tobacco companies put MORE additives in the lights to cross addict you to other things making it harder to quit them. That's why I say - the STUPIDIST thing I ever did was start. My husband doesn't smoke - never has, and I don't know how he puts up with me sometimes. Its a horrible addiction - they say on the same level as kicking heroin or worse. Women find it harder to quit too. I've tried it all - hypnosis, accupuncture, cold turkey (few times), patch (twice), Zyban (didn't work), gum (made me puke), cold turkey again......and I'm not finished. My dad has been smoking and drinking since he was 16(43 now). He drinks beer like I drink Mello Yello(I loooooove mello yello). I've never tried to quit smoking. I don't think I've ever had a real reason to. I'm to the point where I don't want to quit. It relaxes me when I'm stressed. I was 14 when I started and I'm 44 now. Seriously, every year I live is precious and I'm so grateful I've gotten this far - isn't that awful - that I still can't seem to kick it even KNOWING. I've already had a bit of skin cancer (basal cell) and was asthmatic since childhood, and have a skin condition which makes me more apt to get oral cancer. I've also got a good girlfriend who's my age fighting Stage 4 Cervical Cancer right now. Gosh......I'm so depressed now. Don't mean to go off topic. Maybe I need a thread to convince me once and for all. And really Burgers, I know exactly how you're feeling - to this day, I feel the same way and use the same excuses, but if for nothing else, just dating gets difficult. And if you were to quit even for a short while, you'd see what people mean about us stinking. I couldn't believe my clothes, purses, car... Last week I took my mother's keychain to turn on her car ignition so I could close her electric sunroof for her. I forgot to put her keys away, I forgot where I put them, and after a week I still haven't found them. Fortunately, she has a set of spare keys. Unfortunately, the keychain I lost had a lot of sentimental value for her - it was an Anne Klein keychain my sister gave her as a Christmas present - and the way things are going, she should be over her anger in about five. . . or six. . . years! :( :cuss:  Hollow 08-07-2005, 10:00 PM Sounds exactly like my family - everyone smoked - a lot.
