I'm not shocked honestly... well, I am, since he seemed so well just a few months ago. I never preferred him for news, but I've got this bad feeling sitting here right now.

When I found out how advanced the cancer already was, I knew he probably wouldn't make it.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be surprised as we really haven't heard many updates lately. You usually get some news if treatment is going well. Guess when he retired he knew already and wanted the time with his family.

Prayers for Peter. :(

That cancer man, if you dont catch it early, it will destroy you. It's so sad.
With certain deadlier cancers, it doesn't matter if they catch it at Stage 1. With lung cancer, the 5-year survival rate is 14% regardless of when it's detected. If 100 people were diagnosed today with lung cancer, in varying stages (1-4), only 14 would be alive five years from now. I lost my mother to lung cancer three years ago, and I got a crash course on the subject.

Early detection is key in most cancers though, such as certain types of breast cancer, cervical, prostrate, skin, colon, etc.

I remember reading an article about Linda McCartney after she died from breast cancer. It stated how she was viligant about her health and exams, and really took care of herself. She was a vegetarian. Still, the poor woman couldn't be saved. I told my gyn what I had read, and she told me that some cancers are so aggresive that the time of detection doesn't matter.

Pancreatic cancer is another big killer. It's what killed Michael Landon. Ovarian cancer too, which is treatable in the early stages, but unfortunately women don't exhibit symptoms until the late stages. It's also very difficult to detect, and there's no reliable screening method. There's a blood test which insurance only covers if you're in a high risk group (a close family member had it), and the reliablity of that test is questionable. The pap test is for cervical and other cancers, not ovarian. Ovarian cancer claimed Gilda Radner and Madeline Kahn's life.

Some cancers are a death sentence. Luckily, not all.

Jennings and Brokaw were my favorites. Now both of them are off the air, and one may be leaving us.

During 9/11, my TV was mostly glued to ABC. Peter Jennings stayed on the air for hours - maybe too long, in fact, as I saw him apologize for being caught eating a meal on the air. But he and Tom Brokaw were comforting forces to me in the aftermath of that awful day.

I also enjoyed watching his coverage of the millennium from the wee hours of the morning on December 31, 1999 throughout the day.

He is a great name in broadcasting and his presence on television is already missed.

I wish him peace and his family well.

By the way I grew up with the Jennings/Rather/Brokaw era, and within less than a year, all of them are off the air. Too weird.

I hope he's OK too... but when it was learned how advanced the cancer was, my confidence went down. He was REALLY in bad shape when he was first diagnosed from what I understand. If it had been caught early then I'm sure he would have been OK, and probably anchoring the news, at least some.

Do you know how long ago the first one was taken at all?

It wouldn't surprise me that at the moment, ABC News would try to put out disclaimers. He's still employed with them, and they probably feel that it's macabre to release any sort of deathbed vigil - they want to also keep upbeat for his family and other friends and loved ones. To a degree, the Vatican did the same thing until the last couple of days with Pope John II.

Peter Jennings Dies At 67

http://a.abcnews.com/images/WNT/jennings_t.jpgAug. 7 — ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings died today at his home in New York City. He was 67. On April 5, Jennings announced he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

He is survived by his wife Kayce Freed, his two children, Elizabeth, 25, and Christopher, 23, and his sister Sarah Jennings.

In an announcing Jennings' death to his ABC colleagues, News President David Westin wrote:

"For four decades, Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways. None of us will be the same without him.

"As you all know, Peter learned only this spring that the health problem he'd been struggling with was lung cancer. With Kayce, he moved straight into an aggressive chemotherapy treatment. He knew that it was an uphill struggle. But he faced it with realism, courage, and a firm hope that he would be one of the fortunate ones. In the end, he was not.

"We will have many opportunities in the coming hours and days to remember Peter for all that he meant to us all. It cannot be overstated or captured in words alone. But for the moment, the finest tribute we can give is to continue to do the work he loved so much and inspired us to do."

Reported World-Shaping Events

As one of America's most distinguished journalists, Jennings reported many of the pivotal events that have shaped our world. He was in Berlin in the 1960s when the Berlin Wall was going up, and there in the '90s when it came down. He covered the civil rights movement in the southern United States during the 1960s, and the struggle for equality in South Africa during the 1970s and '80s. He was there when the Voting Rights Act was signed in 1965, and on the other side of the world when South Africans voted for the first time. He has worked in every European nation that once was behind the Iron Curtain. He was there when the independent political movement Solidarity was born in a Polish shipyard, and again when Poland's communist leaders were forced from power. And he was in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Romania and throughout the Soviet Union to record first the repression of communism and then its demise. He was one of the first reporters to go to Vietnam in the 1960s, and went back to the killing fields of Cambodia in the 1980s to remind Americans that, unless they did something, the terror would return.

On December 31, 1999, Jennings anchored ABC's Peabody-award winning coverage of Millennium Eve, "ABC 2000." Some 175 million Americans watched the telecast, making it the biggest live global television event ever. "The day belonged to ABC News," wrote The Washington Post, "&with Peter Jennings doing a nearly superhuman job of anchoring." Jennings was the only anchor to appear live for 25 consecutive hours.

Jennings also led ABC's coverage of the September 11 attacks and America's subsequent war on terrorism. He anchored more than 60 hours that week during the Network's longest continuous period of news coverage, and was widely praised for providing a reassuring voice during the time of crisis. TV Guide called him "the center of gravity," while the Washington Post wrote, "Jennings, in his shirt sleeves, did a Herculean job of coverage." The coverage earned ABC News Peabody and duPont awards.

Overseas, and at Home

Jennings joined ABC News on August 3, 1964. He served as the anchor of "Peter Jennings with the News" from 1965 to 1967.

He established the first American television news bureau in the Arab world in 1968 when he served as ABC News' bureau chief for Beirut, Lebanon, a position he held for seven years. He helped put ABC News on the map in 1972 with his coverage of the Summer Olympics in Munich, when Arab terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage. In 1975, Jennings moved to Washington to become the news anchor of ABC's morning program "A.M. America". After a short stint in the mornings, Jennings returned overseas to Rome where he stayed before moving to London to become ABC's Chief Foreign Correspondent. In 1978 he was named the foreign desk anchor for "World News Tonight." He co-anchored the program with Frank Reynolds in Washington, D.C., and Max Robinson in Chicago until 1983.

Jennings was named anchor and senior editor of "World News Tonight" in 1983. In his more than 20 years in the position he was honored with almost every major award given to television journalists.

His extensive domestic and overseas reporting experience was evident in "World News Tonight's" coverage of major crises. He reported from all 50 states and locations around the globe. During the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 War in Iraq, his knowledge of Middle Eastern affairs brought invaluable perspective to ABC News war in Iraq and the drug trade in Central and South America. The series also tackled important domestic issues such as gun control policy, the politics of abortion, the crisis in funding for the arts and a highly praised chronicle of the accused bombers of Oklahoma City. "Peter Jennings Reporting" earned numerous awards, including the 2004 Edward R. Morrow award for best documentary for "The Kennedy Assassination — Beyond Conspiracy."

Jennings also had a particular interest in broadcasting for the next generation. He did numerous live news specials for children on subjects ranging from growing up in the age of AIDS, to prejudice and its effects on our society. After the events of September 11, and again on the anniversary, he anchored a town hall meeting for children and parents entitled, "Answering Children's Questions."

Jennings was honored with many awards for news reporting, including 16 Emmys, two George Foster Peabody Awards, several Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards and several Overseas Press Club Awards. Most recently, "World News Tonight" was recognized with two consecutive Edward R. Murrow awards for best newscast, based on field reporting done by Jennings on the California wildfires and the transfer of power in Iraq. Jennings was the author, with Todd Brewster, of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller, "The Century." It featured first-person accounts of the great events of the century. In 1999, he anchored the 12-hour ABC series, "The Century," and ABC's series for The History Channel, "America's Time." He and Brewster also published "In Search of America," a companion book for the 6-part ABC News series.

About eight years or so ago, Peter Jennings made a prank call to an annoying local morning radio duo, one half of which was constantly getting into trouble for making prank calls as Tom Brokaw (his impersonation was top-notch).

I never was a fan of that station, but a friend of mine gave me a compilation CD they put out back in high school, and I haven't really listened to it since. But tonight, I dusted it off and ripped the track. It actually is a neat bit. He was trying to help a little girl win a computer.

Not sure if Peter was actually pranking them, or if the guys were playing along. Here's the audio of Peter's call:

Rest in peace, Mr. Jennings.

April 5th... 4 months and 2 days ago.

Apparently the cancer was VERY advanced to where surgery was not an option. It had spread to his whole body and once that happens the chances of living more than a few months is slim to none...

wow, the "old school" of nightly news is over so sudden. Since I was a little boy up until late last year, it was always Brokaw, Rather and Jennings. Brokaw and Rather just stepped down in the past year and now Jennings is dead. It's weird how it all changed so fast.

CNN is airing Larry King Live with Peter Jennings from Sept. 2003 right now (1-2am et).

I wonder who ABC will give its anchoring duties to? It'll probably be Charles Gibson, Terry Moran or Elizabeth Vargas. I prefer Moran, since Gibson is on GMA and Vargas on 20/20. Some long shots would be Ted Koppel, Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters.

Its hard to believe that he will never be seen again on World News Tonight and that one of the youngest looking 67 year old's I have ever seen is gone.

WORTH - by RICHARD F. WOLFE

It is not what the world gives me in honor praise or gold. It is what I do give the world so others do unfold.

I have the feeling back in April when he was first diagnosed, Peter Jennings had probably had the lung cancer for quite sometime. I remember he had stated that he had not felt well since December of last year. I figure his doctors were not on top of there game or Peter did not make regular trips for checkups.

RIP Peter, you were always my favorite of the bunch.

During 9/11, my TV was mostly glued to ABC. Peter Jennings stayed on the air for hours - maybe too long

I also enjoyed watching his coverage of the millennium from the wee hours of the morning on December 31, 1999 throughout the day.

That's weird, but I guess it makes sense, since those are the two instances I remember most about Jennings.

It is... but that's because a lot of people don't catch it til it's too late. If caught early where surgery is an option, the survival rate is 90+%. In Peter's case, apparently it had already spread through his entire body and in that situation, the chance for survival is less than 10%.

ABC is planning a special for Peter. Not sure of the date yet, but it'll probably be Tuesday 8-10pm or 9-10pm.
Here is ABC's release on Peter's passing:

We are all very saddened by the passing of Peter Jennings. As many of you know, Peter succumbed to lung cancer late last night at his home in New York City. Peter was a true leader, a great journalist and a friend and colleague to many of us. He valued the local affiliates and the extraordinary local news coverage you provided to your communities as well as his broadcasts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kayce Freed, and his entire family.

Below is the announcement issued by ABC News President David Westin as well as Peter’s bio:

______________________________________________________________

August 7, 2005

ABC NEWS ANCHOR PETER JENNINGS DIES AT AGE 67

ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings died today, Sunday, August 7 at his home in New York City. He was 67. On April 5th of this year, Mr. Jennings announced he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

He is survived by his wife Kayce Freed, his two children Elizabeth, 25 and Christopher, 23 and his sister Sarah Jennings.

In an announcing Mr. Jennings death to his ABC colleagues, News President David Westin wrote:

“For four decades, Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways. None of us will be the same without him.

“As you all know, Peter learned only this spring that the health problem he’d been struggling with was lung cancer. With Kayce, he moved straight into an aggressive chemotherapy treatment. He knew that it was an uphill struggle. But he faced it with realism, courage, and a firm hope that he would be one of the fortunate ones. In the end, he was not.

“We will have many opportunities in the coming hours and days to remember Peter for all that he meant to us all. It cannot be overstated or captured in words alone. But for the moment, the finest tribute we can give is to continue to do the work he loved so much and inspired us to do.”

Peter Jennings

Anchor and Senior Editor, “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings”

Peter Jennings is the anchor and senior editor of ABC’s “World News Tonight” where he has established a reputation for independence and excellence in broadcast journalism. He is the network’s principal anchor for breaking news, election coverage and special events.

As one of America’s most distinguished journalists, Peter Jennings has reported many of the pivotal events that have shaped our world. He was in Berlin in the 1960s when the Berlin Wall was going up, and there in the ‘90s when it came down. He covered the civil rights movement in the southern United States during the 1960s, and the struggle for equality in South Africa during the 1970s and ‘80s. He was there when the Voting Rights Act was signed in 1965, and on the other side of the world when South Africans voted for the first time. He has worked in every European nation that once was behind the Iron Curtain. He was there when the independent political movement Solidarity was born in a Polish shipyard, and again when Poland’s communist leaders were forced from power.

In broadcast journalism, Peter Jennings has a reputation for putting the most complex and difficult issues on the agenda when others have largely ignored them. From his early days in the Middle East and South Africa, to the contemporary challenges in Africa and the former Soviet Union, on education, health care and tobacco -- these are issues with which Mr. Jennings’ stewardship at “World News Tonight” and his special series, “Peter Jennings Reporting,” have been associated.

He is the author, with Todd Brewster, of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller, “The Century.” Structured as an epic tale about “ourselves,” it is a lavish book that features astonishing first-person accounts of the great events of the century. In 1999, he anchored the 12-hour ABC series, “The Century,” and ABC’s series for The History Channel, “America’s Time.” He and Mr. Brewster also published “In Search of America,” a companion book for the 6-part ABC News series.

On December 31, 1999, Mr. Jennings anchored ABC’s Peabody-award winning coverage of Millennium Eve, “ABC 2000.” 175 million Americans watched the telecast, making it the biggest live global television event ever. “The day belonged to ABC News,” praised The Washington Post, “…with Peter Jennings doing a nearly superhuman job of anchoring.” Mr. Jennings was the only anchor to appear live for 25 consecutive hours.

Mr. Jennings led the Network’s coverage of the September 11 attacks and America’s subsequent war on terrorism. He anchored more than 60 hours that week during the Network’s longest continuous period of news coverage, and was widely praised for providing a reassuring voice during the time of crisis. TV Guide called him “the center of gravity,” while the Washington Post wrote, “Jennings, in his shirt sleeves, did a Herculean job of coverage.” The coverage earned ABC News Peabody and duPont awards.

Mr. Jennings joined ABC News on August 3, 1964. He served as the anchor of the “Peter Jennings with the News” from 1965 to 1967.

Jennings established the first American television news bureau in the Arab world in 1968 when he served as ABC News’ bureau chief for Beirut, Lebanon, a position he held for seven years. He helped put ABC News on the map in 1972 with his coverage of the Summer Olympics in Munich, when Arab terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage.

In 1975, Mr. Jennings moved to Washington to become the news anchor of ABC’s morning program “A.M. America”. After a short stint in the mornings, Mr. Jennings returned overseas to Rome where he stayed before moving to London to become ABC’s Chief Foreign Correspondent. In 1978 he was named the foreign desk anchor for “World News Tonight.” He co-anchored the program with Frank Reynolds in Washington, DC and Max Robinson in Chicago until 1983.

Mr. Jennings was named anchor and senior editor of “World News Tonight” in 1983. In his more than 20 years in the position he has been honored with almost every major award given to television journalists.

His extensive domestic and overseas reporting experience has proven to be invaluable during “World News Tonight’s” coverage of major crises. He has reported from all 50 states and locations around the globe. During the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 War in Iraq, his knowledge of Middle Eastern affairs brought invaluable perspective to ABC News’ coverage. Mr. Jennings has interviewed the most important national and international figures of our time and has anchored the ABC News coverage of every major national election since 1984.

In “Peter Jennings Reporting,” which debuted in 1990, Mr. Jennings covers challenging issues in depth during primetime television. Millions watched the critically acclaimed “The Search for Jesus” in 2000 and “Jesus and Paul – the Word and the Witness” in 2004. “Peter Jennings Reporting” has also focused extensively on international news, with specials on tense relations between India and Pakistan, the conflict in Bosnia, the crisis in Haiti, the war in Iraq and the drug trade in Central and South America. The series has also tackled important domestic issues such as gun control policy, the politics of abortion, the crisis in funding for the arts and a highly praised chronicle of the accused bombers of Oklahoma City. “Peter Jennings Reporting” has earned numerous awards, including the 2004 Edward R. Morrow award for best documentary for “The Kennedy Assassination – Beyond Conspiracy.”

Mr. Jennings has a particular interest in broadcasting for the next generation. He has done numerous live news specials for children on subjects ranging from growing up in the age of AIDS, to prejudice and its effects on our society. After the events of September 11, and again on the anniversary, he anchored a town hall meeting for children and parents entitled, “Answering Children’s Questions.”

Mr. Jennings has been honored with many awards for news reporting, including 16 Emmys, two George Foster Peabody Awards, several Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards and several Overseas Press Club Awards. Most recently, “World News Tonight” was recognized with two consecutive Edward R. Murrow awards for best newscast, based on field reporting done by Mr. Jennings on the California wildfires and the transfer of power in Iraq.

He resides in Manhattan with his wife, Kayce Freed. He has two children Elizabeth, 25 and Christopher, 23.

PRESIDENT BUSH, WORLD LEADERS, COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS REMEMBER PETER JENNINGS

President George W. Bush
“Laura and I were saddened to learn about the death of Peter Jennings. Peter Jennings had a long and distinguished career as a news journalist. He covered many important events, events that helped define the world as we know it today. A lot of Americans relied upon Peter Jennings for their news. He became a part of the lives of a lot of our fellow citizens, and he will be missed. May God bless his soul. Thank you.”

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice “I am saddened by the death of my close, personal friend Peter Jennings. To Peter’s wife and family, we offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences. He will be deeply missed.

“Peter Jennings represented all that was best in journalism and public service. A man of conscience and integrity, his reporting was a guide to all of us who aspire to better the world around us. I learned from him and was inspired by him.”

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell
“Peter Jennings was a great man and the consummate professional. His reassuring presence will be missed by all of us.”

Prime Minister Paul Martin of Canada
“It was with great sorrow that Sheila and I learned of the death of Peter Jennings yesterday. Born in Toronto, Peter Jennings will be remembered as one of America’s most inspirational and distinguished journalists of our times. Peter Jennings covered many of the most defining moments in the world’s post-war history: he witnessed the Berlin Wall coming up in the 1960s and down in the 1990s, the struggle for equality in South Africa, the Gulf War and, most recently, the September 2001 terrorist attacks.”

“Peter Jennings started his career in Canadian radio at the age of nine with a kids show called ‘Peter’s People.’ All through his life he devoted time and energy in educating children about the world, and he has been honored with many awards for his reporting and documentaries. He will continue to be a source of inspiration for generations of young reporters to come.”

“Sheila and I join with all Canadians and Americans to offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Jennings’ wife, Kayce Freed, and to his two children, Elizabeth and Christopher.”

Michael Eisner, Chief Executive Officer, Walt Disney Company Robert Iger, President and Chief Operating Officer, Walt Disney Company
“We have lost a great colleague and friend, Peter Jennings. For four decades, Peter set a standard of fairness, intelligence, insightfulness and courage. This last trait was especially evident during these last months. For once, Peter himself became the story as his courageous battle with cancer served as an inspiration for millions of people across America.”

“Peter was one of those unique individuals who was larger than life but never lost the common touch. He possessed an innate understanding of the human condition, which is why his broadcasts had such an air of authenticity. He understood that the world was a complex place and had the extraordinary ability to communicate that complexity to millions of viewers day after day.”

“If only Peter were here now. With his succinct eloquence, he could find the words to describe the depth of our sorrow and loss.”

“We know you will join us in expressing our heartfelt sympathies to Peter’s wife, Kayce, and his family.”

Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair Disney Media Networks and President, Disney-ABC Television Group
“Peter was a true leader, a great journalist and, to many of us, a valued friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kayce Freed, and his entire family.”

David Westin, President ABC News
“For four decades, Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways. None of us will be the same without him.”

In the end, he was not.”

“We will have many opportunities in the coming hours and days to remember Peter for all that he meant to us all. It cannot be overstated or captured in words alone. But for the moment, the finest tribute we can give is to continue to do the work he loved so much and inspired us to do.”

ABC News Anchor Ted Koppel
“It’s always difficult when a close friend dies. Peter and I became friends during the Goldwater campaign of 1964; so we knew each other a very long time. What that does, of course, is to create a shared experience that you only have with very few other people. My wife and I have been friends longer. I have a couple of old college friends who fall into that category. There is no one left, however, with whom I have lived and experienced the emergence and growth of ABC News, as with Peter.”

“We joined the news division when it was barely a factor among the three networks. We were so young and inexperienced that neither of the other networks would have had us. We grew up as ABC News grew up. How much we didn’t know as young reporters was a secret we shared and worked hard to overcome. No one I have ever known overcame initial inexperience as fully and as effectively as Peter. For at least the last twenty years of his life and career, he was the complete package: a smooth and reassuring presence and a great journalist with a wealth of experience, always leavened with compassion.”

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani
“Peter Jennings was a gentleman. Even when asking the tough, insightful questions, he did so in a gentlemanly fashion. He was able to find the weakness in an argument and point it out, but in a constructive way, not in a ‘gotcha’ way.”

”On New Year’s Eve, 1999, the world joined Peter in ushering in the new millennium. I remember going to the ABC studios early in the morning of December 31st. He had already been on the air for hours, shepherding in the year 2000, showing how the whole world greeted the new century. It was a joyful day, and Peter brought meaning to that joy for viewers while highlighting the great celebration of his adopted home town, New York City.”

”On September 11th, Peter’s journalistic ability, coupled with his humanity, informed and helped comfort us. Like all those watching that day, he too was in pain over the destruction wreaked on his beloved city, but he soldiered on and did so with compassion and eloquence.”

”While that clear, calm voice is silent now, the memory of his articulate and thoughtful presence will live on in our hearts forever. I extend my prayers and sympathies to his wife, Kayce, his children, Christopher and Elizabeth, and his sister, Sarah, and his network family at ABC News.”

He was one of the best and I can't imagine WNT without him, but that's what we all have to go through. RIP Peter.

Bad weekend to be at ABC, husband of Elizabeth Vargas shot... could have been fatal.

Singer Marc Cohn survives being shot in head
Mon Aug 8, 2005 8:34 PM ET

DENVER (Reuters) - Grammy-winning singer Marc Cohn was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking after a concert in Denver but survived with only minor injuries, police said on Monday.

Cohn had just finished a performance on Sunday night when a man fleeing on foot from police tried to commandeer the van Cohn was riding in, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

When the van driver refused to stop, the suspect fired into the vehicle, striking Cohn in the head, although the bullet did not penetrate his skull.

"The bullet hit Mr. Cohn flush in the temple," Jackson said. "He's very lucky it wasn't a fatal shot."

Surgeons removed the bullet protruding from Cohn's skull and released him in good condition Monday morning, Jackson said.

Cohn, winner of the 1991 Grammy for best newcomer and best known for the song "Walking in Memphis," is married to ABC News correspondent and anchor Elizabeth Vargas. They have a 2-year-old son.

Police said the suspect is accused of carjacking another vehicle and is still at large. Jackson said he was fleeing from police after using a stolen credit card and also was wanted for failing to appear in court.

Peter Jennings death is really hard to believe. I can not believe that he had been anchoring World News Tonight all through March 2005 and everyone believed he was totally healthy and one of the youngest looking 66 year olds around. He even had anchored the whole week before he made the announcement on April 5th which would be his last TV appearance.

When Johnny Carson died back in January, it was kind of expected, he was nearly 80 years old, had reportedly been in very poor health, had really not been seen in 13 years since he left the Tonight Show in 1992. But with Jennings, he had been in everyone's living room for 22 years and appeared totally healthy.

That's the thing that makes this hard to understand... I dug into the archives tonight and found tapes of Election Night, 9/11, and ABC 2000 and it's hard to believe 9 months ago he anchored coverage of the Presidential election and looked completely healthy... and it's amazing how much his voice changed by the time he announced on April 5th.

He could have had it for years. Obviously either he had no early symptoms, never went for checkups, or ignored potential symptoms.

We know he had it since December, because he did not travel with the Tsunami coverage. If he had only begun treatment then, he might have lived longer.

Yeah - from the sounds of it, he was in a bit of denial that it could be something serious. Smokers (and former smokers) tend to do that. They just figure throat irritation or a cough is something else and don't get it looked at.

I sure hope Dana Reeve's isn't nearly as advanced. I don't know if she ever even smoked (although you don't have to - look at Lance Armstrong). I pray she'll be alright. Very upsetting hearing this news only a couple of days after losing Peter especially.

I haven't read anything about his smoking habit.

Does anyone know if Jennings was smoking up until his diagnosis or if he had quit years ago?

Also, how much did he smoke?- a pack a day, 2?

I find it odd there is no mention, especially with a prominent figure whose illness should be used as a warning to all people who smoke.

Jennings was a smoker for 34 years. He started at the age of 13 in 1951 and quit in 1985. He then started up after 9/11.

He smoked during his foreign correspondent days(70's through Mid 80's) apparently... sounds like he was a heavy smoker(whatever that means). He quit and then smoked again after 9/11 due to all the stress, but I think he had quit again before his diagnosis.

Jennings Special Strong, but NBC Wins Wednesday
(Thursday, August 11 08:30 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005

ABC's tribute to news anchor Peter Jennings delivered solid ratings Wednesday, but a big dropoff following the special allowed NBC to win the night. NBC averaged a 5.5 rating/9 share in primetime, narrowly beating ABC's 5.3/9. CBS took third at 4.0/7, slightly ahead of FOX's 3.8/7 (FOX had an edge in total viewers, however). UPN took fifth with a 1.5/3, and The WB trailed with a 1.0/2.

The Peacock also scored a victory among adults 18-49, earning a 2.6 rating in the prime advertising demographic. FOX's 2.4 was good for second, beating ABC, 2.2, and CBS, 2.1. UPN averaged 1.0 and The WB 0.6.

"Peter Jennings: Reporter," a look back at the late anchor's career, posted a 6.0/11 to win the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. NBC was second, averaging 4.7/9 with "The Most Outrageous TV Moments" and the special "Unforgettable Moments in TV." FOX's "So You Think You Can Dance" was third at 4.2/7. Repeats of "Still Standing" and "Yes, Dear" put CBS in fourth. UPN got a 1.8/3 from "R U the Girl," which beat The WB's "One Tree Hill."

The Jennings special improved to 7.0/12 at 9 p.m. to keep ABC in front. "Unforgettable Moments in TV" built to a 6.1/10 for NBC. FOX stayed in third with the last half-hour of "So You Think You Can Dance," 4.6/8, and "The Bernie Mac Show," 2.9/5. CBS stayed stuck in fourth with "Rock Star: INXS," 3.1/5, and "The King of Queens," 3.0/5. UPN's "Veronica Mars" edged The WB's "Smallville" for fifth.

NBC took the lead in households at 10 p.m. with "Law & Order," 5.6/10, although CBS' "CSI: NY," 5.5/9, led in total viewers, 8.04 million to 7.67 million. ABC's "Lost" rerun suffered a big fall from its lead-in, coming in at 2.9/5.

My husband smokes "Player's Light" cigarettes, and I've seen him wake up in the middle of the night to go outside to light a cigarette.

How can tobacco companies get away with this, that a person can't even sleep throughout the night without having extreme nicotine cravings for a cigarette?

It's a sickening illness that somebody can be so addicted to this garbage!! :crying:

Sorry O/T - I know - and unfortunately, I did the same - switched to the "light" cigarettes - they're EVEN worse - found out just a couple of years ago that they put even more in those to cross addict you. I'm usually o.k. overnight unless something else wakes me up and if I'm up for more then 10 mins., then I find myself reaching for one too. These companies should really be taken to task, but they're all such huge lobbyists (sp?) that they get away with it. It's absolutely criminal. I don't know how many ways or times I've tried quitting - and you'd think I'd know more than anyone. It's embarrassing to admit, but if it can prevent someone else from making the mistake I'll shout it from the rooftops.

Jennings` funeral kept to family only
NEW YORK, NY, United States (UPI) -- Only family members attended the private funeral of ABC news anchorman Peter Jennings this week, it was disclosed Friday.

A New York funeral home director refused to provide details of the service or even disclose when it was except to confirm it took place and only family was there, the New York Post reported.

"We were given strict instructions by the family," he said. "They kept it really private."

A public memorial will be announced at a later date for Jennings, who died of lung cancer Sunday at age 67.

Full blog can be found at: http://www.canada.com/national/globalnational/newmanblog.html

SUBJECT: In Memory of Peter Jennings

There is a triangle-folded American flag in my Canadian cabin. It is, in fact, the only thing overtly American in a log and stone structure my wife and I have stuffed with Canadiana and our most cherished family memories. It is a flag that once flew atop the Capitol Dome in Washington, and it was a gift from Peter Jennings. I am in the cabin tonight, having just been told that Peter has lost his fight with cancer.

Peter presented the gift to me on my final day at ABC News, suspecting something I didn’t fully appreciate until he put it in my hands: that I had come to love America in my seven years living and working there, just as he had in his quarter century. After he handed it to me he said, “take this home, treat it with respect, and remember to never take the easy road of defining your Canadian identity by denigrating this great country”. He had enormous affection for Americans, and that made him an even greater Canadian.

Even though he pretty much left the country in his twenties, he clung to Canada. When I met him for the first time in 1994 as part of my job interview at ABC, he was quick to pepper me for my perspective on Canadian politics, the various personalities, and the cultural shifts taking place. He was always current and caring. We would sometimes conspire to get Canadian stories on World News Tonight. When the Millennium arrived, he ensured Newfoundland with its half time zone would share his 24-hour broadcast with Paris, London and Moscow. When debates were raging in Congress over health care, campaign finance reform or any number of other issues he would often ask me to file a piece on how Canada found a slightly different solution to the same set of problems. When the P.Q. almost won the Referendum, he was front and center in explaining to Americans why they should care. My American colleagues would sometimes roll their eyes when Peter ‘went Canadian’, but all the Canucks he inspired to work alongside him would quietly celebrate the power he had to keep Canada on America’s agenda.

Peter worked incredibly hard. Too hard. But his curiosity just wouldn’t let him rest. As a young man who never completed high school I sometimes had the impression he felt an extra obligation to be a student the rest of his life. An astonishing insecurity, actually, considering all he accomplished. Everything he became – his eloquence, his passion, and his un-matched ability to see the force of history in a tragedy unfolding under his feet – all of that was self-taught. He was a remarkable scholar.

And an even greater teacher. By watching him I learned how to search for context and meaning and not be satisfied with simply discovering’fact’. I watched him carefully guiding viewers through times of tragedy, sorrow and fear, all the while remaining measured in tone and reminding viewers of the limits of his knowledge. He was often a tough editor, but the good ones are.

I met his children only once. They were polite, interesting and adventurous – and not at all like the children of privilege I imagined they would be. Peter would rarely admit to taking pride in things, his children were the exception.

In some ways, Peter has been godfather to every Canadian television journalist who has worked in the United States, if not directly for him. He set the standard that allowed so many of us to be welcomed as serious journalists and storytellers. I’m luckier than most because I have a crisply folded American flag to remind me of Peter Jennings, and the memories of his lifetime of wisdom.
