View Full Version : Was James a fool for giving back that money?
nerrad 08-02-2005, 01:22 PM YES YES YES.. I personally would've called the Evanses myself, much like everyone else who watched the news did. I don't know what those obscene callers were saying, but I agree 100 percent.
Footnote: Florida asking James "what was he doing home when he was on television" ranks as one of the dummest comments ever on sitcom TV.

Why was that a dumb comment? Florida was no expert on TV making.
nerrad 08-02-2005, 03:49 PM It just didn't seem right to ask James a question like that. And james acted liked he some kind of an expert: "Oh that's what they call a delayed tape". Think about it Brian. They are watching him on TV and he walks thru the door. And she asks him, "What are you doing here when you suppose to be on television".
Brieannas21 08-02-2005, 04:45 PM Edith asked Archie the same question on All in the Family.

I agree. One time when I was younger and my sister was driving we saw Bob Barker driving. I thought, how could he be driving around when he was supposed to be at the Price is Right???? LOL
Florida wouldn't have known abt tape delays. she assumed it was live

I am sure James would have been told by the news anchor/caster to watch himself on the news at a certain time. James probably asked how is that, and it was then he was told abt the delayed tape. I don't see what the problem is.

Was he a fool? I guess so. I would have kept the money. I have found $$ and kept it. One time when I was 15 I found a wallet with credit cards and $$$ and believe me I was tempted but I decided to mail it back to the man. I received a call two days later and the gratitude in that man's voice is something I remember to this day. I am glad I returned that wallet. He was glad too. He wanted to give me a reward but I declined. Again, about six months ago I found a purse in the shopping lot and i could easily see it had alot of bills in there but I immediately took it into the store so they could find the rightful owner. Just times when I would keep $$$, and other times I wouldn't. Just depends on the situation.

I disagree. Wrong is wrong even if it helps you.
Zions Mother 08-02-2005, 09:15 PM I would have kept all the money. But they did the good thing. The show portrayed honesty and integrity. Can you imagine what the haters of Good Times would have been saying if the episode were written as them keeping the money. I can hear them now, "look at them portraying black people as dishonest people or even thieves." The haters will never look at the positive side of anything.

Got that straight!!!!!
GeeBee 08-02-2005, 09:21 PM I wouldn't have even thought of keeping money that wasn't mine. No matter how you look at it, it's stealing. They couldn't quite decide whether they wanted James to be crooked like Archie Bunker or an honest character. In another episode, someone said that he always was "Honest James" and he refused to get involved in a crooked deal that would ruin the kids.

Archie Bunker would have definitely kept the money  Edith would have been a nervous wreck. That's wonderful that you would have returned all of the money and I'm being serious not sarcastic :)

Here is my question, Why did James even have to announce that he kept the money? He could have just stashed it somewhere and used it for food, bills, and etc. Kind like he what he did when he didn't tell Florida in "Getting Up the Rent" that he didn't win the money from playing pool. Why say anything?
Brian Damage 08-02-2005, 10:04 PM He said it in a moment of anger.

Because deep down, James knew it was wrong and wanted somebody to tell him so.

Thanks!
Vince 887 08-14-2005, 03:14 AM I think James kept some of the money:)
TVFactFan 08-14-2005, 10:38 AM Willona classic statement about the reward James received.
"$50 Gift Certificate? The way that market rips people off $50 will only get you $10 worth of groceries-lol
JeffRuss1972 08-14-2005, 05:38 PM JAMES: "You heard that old saying, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. All I did was just let a little of that money ROME into my hands . . ." lol

Archie did have some integrity when showed the error of his ways.
Edith would have had no part of it and would have shown Archie the light in his own way.
Meathead would have taken the money because of it coming from a corporation and sent it to "Vacectomies for the Pakistani's" charity.
James did the right thing because it was a TV show. But it was human as he wrestled with it big time and actually kept some of the money in the first place until guilt got the best of him.
It shows that you would at least think about it. especially considering the dire straits your family might be in.
