I beginning to get a little perplexed by the popularity of that catchphrase. I mean to me, I never found it funny, but it was popular none the less. The thing is, while watching the show, whenever JJ would say "Dynomite" the reaction was just luke warm. Nobody really busted out laughing from the studio audience. With that said, how did it become so popular?

Probably something the show's PR dept. dreamt up and started the merchandising of t-shirts to help push the shows popularity.
Its like when they came out with the M*A*S*H t-shirts.

Or the studio had one of those "applause" signs demanding the audience to applause when that word was said. I went to a taping of the Arsenio Hall Show and I can't recall what it was but the stagehand guy told us (the audience) whenever that sign lit up (applause) we were to applause. Not only during the obvious times but also during a certain time during the show. I can't recall what that was though.

The Studio Audience EXPLODED everytime J.J said Dynomite during season 2. I guess after season 2, it became OLD and the phrase didn't get the same reaction from the audience
