View Full Version : Question about DVD's
Hey, what's up? I was a fan of Unsolved Mysteries back in the late '80s and early '90s. I rarely watch it on Lifetime because they show mostly new episodes which aren't as good as the older ones (mostly cuz they changed the music  ) though I have read on this board that they show older ones from time to time, so I may have to give it a look.
Anyway, about the DVDs - are most of the episodes on these DVDs older ones, when they had the cool music? I read some reviews of the DVDs and I remember some of the episodes that are listed, but there are some that I can't remember, so they may be newer ones. My favorite music is the Update music - the OLD Update music before they changed it. I read on the review of the Bizarre Murders DVD that they have Updates for some cases. Does that come with the old music?
I only ask this because some DVDs I've gotten of other shows for some reason have changed background music, making it not as good. Music on shows is very important to me.
DarkDante 08-01-2005, 04:07 PM Quality is amazing and some of the segments on the dvds (such as "The Boys On The Tracks") LIFETIME rarely shows anymore. There are a great deal of negatives though - First off there are a lot of cases that were not included in the "Bizarre Murders" dvd that a lot of people feel are some of the best cases (Son Of Sam, Blind River Rest Stop Killings, Lisa Marie Kimmell - just to name a few) - That being said the dvds were also editted to make them seem more like the "new Lifetime" episodes which were created in 2001-2002. There are none of the old openings/bumpers present on the dvds and a great deal of the cases are culled from the mid 90-early 00s when the show started going downhill.
The "Bizarre Murders" dvd is really one big crapshoot.

When you say none of the old openings/bumpers are present, are you saying that the old, popular theme music isn't even on the DVDs???
If so, what a joke. Maybe I'll save my money.
Is Lifetime showing older episodes? Maybe I'll tape those.
jcjh20 08-01-2005, 04:43 PM Lifetime does show older episodes, each weekday at 12 and 1 pm. They have the original theme song, update music, closing credits music (which is real eerie and used to scare me to hell as a kid) and promo on those, and everything else is also true to the original broadcast as far as i know. They may play the updated "new" Lifetime versions of the show here and there, but when i've been watching it's mostly been older episodes from the late 80s, early 90s.
As far as the DVDs go, i think they're worth buying. The music is the updated promo music, and like someone said, everything else is updated to appear as looking like the newer Lifetime versions of the show, but they are still very entertaining compilations of some great Unsolved Mysteries segments. If you love Unsolved Mysteries, i'm sure you'd enjoy watching them. Of course there are flaws, like the fact that there are only 2 commentaries per DVD (even though those 2 are indeed very cool to watch, despite the fact that some of them are kinda half-assed on the part of the commenter), the fact that they released a compilation of segments which obviously overlooks many many great segments (they should just release each season on DVD like every other show instead of just giving us selected segments), and the lack of other bonus features that would be nice to have.
Despite those gripes, i think they're worth buying and watching. They're quite entertaining and i'm pleased they finally released Unsolved Mysteries on DVD. I got them at www.amazon.com for only around 20 dollars, so i personally don't think that's a bad deal for 4 dvd discs. My favorite is probably the Bizaare Murders DVD, which really got me wanting to watch more segments after i watched them all, which is the thing the bothers me most about the DVDs. I wish they'd just release all the episodes!
DarkDante 08-01-2005, 06:25 PM thats exactly what I meant - They use the "Lifetime" 2001/2002 tags for the most part although small snippets of the theme music can be found as the segments segue into one another although most would agree the ambiance is lost in the way that the producers of the dvds tried to make the entire feel of the set resemble the 2001/2002 broadcasts.
If you are interested, look down the page a set of videotapes called "Unsurpassed Mysteries" is being traded - Although Volume 1 has already been tree'd out - Volumes 2-7 are going to be tree'd (or distributed) to interested group members within the new few months. Volumes 6-7 are of particular interest as they will contain segments never aired by "Lifetime" including segments hosted not by Robert Stack but by Karl Malden and Raymond Burr.

I'm very interested and i'm glad it's not too late! I sent you a PM message about it. Those volumes 6 and 7 do catch my fancy a lot, as i've always been wanting to see those very first episodes with the alternate hosts and i've doubted i'd ever see them on Lifetime or anywhere else for that matter.

Thanks for the offer. You can count me as "interested." I am, however, very picky when it comes to the picture and sound quality of the tapes, as I've been burnt before in previous deals with people over the Internet - no offense, I'm just kinda hard to please. ;)
Unfortunately, I currently only have one VCR so I am not able to dub any tapes. I doubt if I have anything you'd want for trade, either. I guess that means I'm a leaf and at the bottom of the tree, right? Oh well....
