View Full Version : Francine
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 02:46 PM Did anybody like the addition of Francine? She seemed to be te replacement for Ginny.
Was Francine a good move or was she annoying? I guess they needed another character so Bonnie Franklin would have somebody to interact with other than the girls and Schneider. When I was a kid I never liked new characters added to shows, but when I saw the reunion show clips I know I would enjoy seeing Ann and Francine at each other's throats. A lot of the situations went over my head then that I would like a chance to see them today. Back then Francine was just annoying new cast member like Jolene on Alice.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 02:47 PM I had a crush on Francine when I was younger.
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 02:50 PM There must have been a Fabraes family discount on One Day at a Time. If you hire the niece you get the aunt for only half price added to the cast! ( or was Shelley really Nanette's daughter?)
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 03:03 PM She is Shelley's Aunt.
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 03:05 PM I recently heard that Nanette was the aunt, but I wasn't sure. For many years I thought they were mother and daughter. I always thought Shelley was little witchy way back on Donna Reed.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 03:08 PM Shelley was witchy on ODAAT too. She was H-O-T though, so I let it slip.
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 03:15 PM This might sound weird, but I liked Shelley's hair in the clips I saw. It was a lot better than what her hair presently looked liked on the reunion interview. I do hope that was a wig! I laughed when I saw that!

Oh, my Lord, Shelley!! She looks like a popular new wave singer who was really huge in Britain in the early 80's. Her name is Toyah Willcox.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 03:47 PM Yeah, I can see the resemblance
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 03:50 PM Yeah, I can see the resemblance
I love 80's retro. Makes me young again!!! Shelley is into 80's retro it looks like!! Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons, Lene Lovich, Nina Hagen... I can't forget about the lovely Danielle Dax.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 04:04 PM She must be having a mid life crisis or something. That looks absolutely putrid on her.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 04:05 PM This is how I like to remember her. Man was she beautiful!
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 04:11 PM I like that frizz from Coach. Didn't she have some health problems recently?
mstewart 07-31-2005, 04:43 PM I love the addition of Francine on One Day At A Time. Her and Ann Romano played off well on each other especially when they went at each other's throats. I love Francine's line on Episode 117, The Amarillo Connection, when Ann told Francine to fly over on her broom. Francine shot her back with, "If I were a witch we would rhyme." Very clever.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 05:47 PM I never heard of her being sick.
seventies_sitcoms 07-31-2005, 05:58 PM I never heard of her being sick.
Way back in the reunion discussion thread I thought a poster said she was suffering from liver problems.
seventies_sitcoms 04-19-2006, 09:25 PM The infamous Francine. Will we see her on Comcast???!!!
In my ongoing attempt to catch up to seasons 1-4, the first appearance of Francine is tonight.

WONDERFUL!!!! She is my favorite character!
How soon till Max and Grandma Romano show up? They are my REAL favorite characters! :) ;)

Grandma is the end of season 4, Max the beginning of season 5. You'll need the show to survive the Antenna fall changes to see them again.

I have faith in that ODAAT will run until Dec. 31, than Johnny Carson/Tonite Show will take over. That would make sense! It's already season 3 and going on September. In less than 4 months it will get to season 9 , and than even start over again I'm thinking? Are my calculations right? ! ;)

Actually, I enjoyed tonight's ep.! Ann and Francine have good acting chemistry together! Francine actually was a good addition to the show, but not overkill, because she was only in a few select eps and the character didn't outshine the original cast! ;)
Side note! Barbara's shoes!!! In a scene in the living room, it clearly was showing Barbara's shoes! OMG!!! EARTH SHOES!!! That brought me back! :) They were so popular back in the mid 70's! Flat, light brown suede masculine looking shoes that all us girls wore on casual days with jeans. They were so comfortable! But looking back now they weren't the most feminine attractive shoes! :D My Mom was like Why do you girls want to wear shoes that look like they are for men? I had a couple pairs of them. All the girls did. They were so comfortable and cool! ;)
Ronny G 08-29-2015, 07:26 PM Loved the addition of Francine. She was quite the opposite of "plain Jane" Ann. I remember watching the show when I was younger, and I always liked it when she showed up because I thought she was sexy, dressed stylish, had nice hair, and I liked her little digs at Ann. She reminded me of a grown up version of Blair Warner, the snobbish character on Facts of Life.
I forgot to ask before, but does everyone know Shelley married Mike Farrell, B.J. on MASH, in 1984, and they're still married.
mstewart 08-31-2015, 12:41 PM The classic dig Francine put on Ann was, "If I were a witch we would rhyme." I screamed when she went there on Ann

That is an insult to the character of Blair Warner. Blair is my favorite on The Facts of Life. Yes she is vain and shallow, but she has a heart of gold and she shows it. Francine is conceited, selfish, disrespectful, dismissive, arrogant, and a hypocrite. I did not like her (can you tell? lol). Thank goodness Shelley got to play a nice lady on Coach (even though her hair was much prettier and hence she looked better on ODAAT). :)
Anna Karenina 08-24-2016, 05:14 PM I disagree, Francine turned out to have a very good heart and was a good, unselfish friend to Ann and Alex especially. :)
She helped get him through puberty.
