5. J.J was boarderline ********
6. Family looked Dirty

Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 12:10 PM Do you need some backup over there?

I agree with #4. Florida wore outfits all the time to match her name! Maybe orange and brown were Esther Rolle's favorite colors and maybe she felt she looked best in them on camera. Anyway, they were pretty big color combinations back then.
That apartment wasn't dirty. Everything was rundown and used to death in there, and they weren't fancy apartments to start with. Very stark and just plain. Florida did her best to brighten up the place, but she had nothing to work with.
The kids were clean. James and Florida were clean. Nobody wore dirty clothes and everybody was well groomed. You better believe they were. Look at the way J.J. and Thelma fought over bathroom time. J.J. took three hours to go out on a date. Poor Michael always had to dance around the apartment because he couldn't get into the john! He should've ran across the hall to Willona's. :)
I don't see how this show was demeaning to black people or to anybody. It shows a black family doing all they can do to survive a tough and cruel world. Sadly, we still have that same world today, and things aren't much better out there!!
There is a troll(s) over at the TV Land boards that post under 400 names, but have the same writing style. Honestly, this person(s) want Leave it to Beaver, Dennice the Menace, Munsters on and they will trash most any shows from the 70's up to now. This psycho is just p.o'd that TV Land no longer caters to the squeaky clean 50's and 60's like they once did. You attract a lot of religious fanatics over there too who think TV Land should play safe clean shows to they can use the TV to babysit their kids.
Even if you're not a fan, please everybody go to the TV Land programming suggestions board and ask for One Day at a Time. There is somebody who will answer "God, no!", or "Keep that thing off!" everytime!
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 05:01 PM I agree with you seventies sitcom. Good Times has it's things that we criticize abt, but in general it was reality. I loved it. As for Florida's clothes, she was poor, she would have her kids in new clothes before she bought herself something new. The apt. was nice. It was really nice in the episode abt the apartment contest. I liked the fact that she had old pots and pans; ever notice the dented old pan the oatmeal was cooked in??? that's reality!! This is the ghetto people. The kids were clean and the place was nice with what they had to work with. It even got better over time as the $$ got a little better with JJ working. I mentioned how the walls changed over the seasons but I meant the style of the walls, not the fact of them being dirty. Did I miss something? Did anyone really say Florida was dirty, talked bad English?
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 05:01 PM sorry for my grammar, i typed so fast!!!!!!! LOL

I can remember Florida not speaking with proper Englisg in the episode-"Junior The Senior" After J.J decided to go to the 12th grade, Florida told J.J
"you gone need that education when you get out in the real world"
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 05:13 PM Well, I agree, that scene, and there are some other episodes, but I don't think anyone here criticized the way Florida spoke. I just checked out the TVLand message boards and they ARE TERRIBLE, RUDE, CRUDE AND LEWD. They are vile over there. I wouldn't even waste my time responding to what they have posted. This message board is very nice. It gets off the subject at times, but in general very nice. We may notice bloopers, mistakes, goofs, changes, wigs, clothes, attitude, etc. but the things that are being said over there are just plain BAD!!!

That's because the TV LAND Message Boards don't have any moderators like SitcomsOnline. So those boards are always out of Control
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 05:23 PM didn't know that. thanx for the info.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 05:57 PM I don't know about anybody else, but I found Florida's english endearing.
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 05:59 PM I loved Florida. I loved everything abt her. She reminds me of my late mother. That loving, caring, sweet tender loving way abt her.

Exactly, she believe in a good education for her kids, was very protective, made them say prayers before every meal, and worked hard. There really isn't anything to not like about her.

It improved after season 1.

I think TV Land has one moderator for most of the boards. His name TVLtheLink, or "Link" for short. They remove most dirty stuff over there pretty quickly. The big mistake over there is not checking IP numbers and blocking certain people from posting. It is because of only a few twisted people over there that the boards are horrendous.
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 06:04 PM You know, the fact that I come from a hispanic family, it says something abt Esther Rolle for me to have found her to be the closet thing to reminding me of my own mother. I cannot find anyone, especially hispanic, that can come close to reminding me of my mother the way Esther did with the role of Florida. I now regret not having contacted Ms. Rolle and letting her know this. My loss.
Brian Damage 07-31-2005, 06:04 PM When she got mad or excited, it all came out! lol

I think most people would like to have a neighbor like Florida.

I haven't been on that board, but I'll take the time to check it out. If it's that bad over there, it sounds like a bunch of misery loves company. They have probably read comments from this board which are primarily positive and knew their comments would not be supported here.

Thanks for the info.
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 08:37 PM Are you just scanning thru TVL or did you actually sign on Zion?

I'm AkitaZion on that board.
I found the racist, demeaning and poor english comments, to which I have responded. I also saw the one about the orange dress. I haven't made a comment there yet. I'm trying to find the dirty kitchen comments.
Ireneparalegal 07-31-2005, 08:50 PM The reason I asked is because Brian and another member said they had tried to register so they could post comments and they were unable to. I guess you just had better luck than them. Keep up the good work. If I had to respond, I would be too tired from typing, those boards over there are just too vile and cruel. Let us know.

I think the dirty kitchen comments are on the Programming suggestions board and not the actual Good Times board.
