well, assuming that both your Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) are up-to-date, and that you have tried running both programs in safemode...

first get the VX2 Cleaner (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml) add-on for AdAware, it is helpful for removing some of the more virulent strains of spyware.

if you have Windows XP, use Microsoft's free Antispyware (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en&Hash=CHYKS69) program. Remember to run these programs once in normal mode, then reboot into safemode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml)and run them again.

to remove trojans, try the free AČ anti-trojan (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)

to get rid of the Coolweb/CS2/VX2 hijacker, use CoolWebShredder (http://www.spychecker.com/program/coolwebshredder.html)

to prevent these programs from getting onto your computer in the first place, use SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) and Mikes-Hosts-File (http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html) - they block known bad sites (like the ones that host those pop-ups)

and to see what is actually going on, use HiJackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) to create a logfile which will reveal any hijackers or spyware that is running on your system. you can post a log at the HijackThis support forums (http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=27) or the Spywareinfo forums (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/) for the best help.

everything I have listed here is completely free for non-commercial users, there really is no need to buy antispyware software.

you also need to make sure that you are using a good antivirus and firewall software.

I have tried different pop-up blockers, but find most of them pretty useless - I use firefox and disable pop-ups in the settings, and I have NEVER HAD A SINGLE POP-UP since I started using it.

What about pop unders, I seem to get them frequently, especially on here.

same theory applies - the only difference in a pop-under is the command that opens it; you get them in exactly the same way so you would combat them in the same way.

in firefox, if you go to the Tools > Options menu, then click on the Web Features tab. make sure that Block Popup Windows is checked, then click on the "Advanced" button beside Enable Javascript. Under the "Allow scripts to:" uncheck EVERYTHING and click on the OK button and close the options window.

huh??

That's what causes the worst of the spyware, and that's usually the kind Spyware and Adware can't get rid of, which makes it all the more annoying.

I think that was a joke, lighten up, however that is where a lot of spyware comes from.

Try "Popup Manager," which is freeware available at www.snapfiles.com. I have it on my computer and it works. Also put on SpywareGuard.

spyware isn't caused by pictures of certain things. sounds to me like you're analyzing your own experience.

most of the latest variants of spyware (and viruses for that matter) are highly sophisticated and well-written pieces of code that are strategically designed and to take advantage of people's gullibility and use any form of bait that they can to get their crap on your machines.

porn just happens to be a very effective bait for some reason.

I use Google's toolbar and it blocks pop-up ads and does it quite well. Doesn't take up screen space but it's worth it and it's free. Go to the Google Downloads page here (http://www.google.com/downloads) and select Google Toolbar in the pink box and click 'Download Now'. Follow the simple instructions and the toolbar is just a tiny strip that won't take up hardly much screen space. If you have broadband or another high-speed connection, it should only take a couple seconds for the download to complete.

Hope that helps. :)
